22.01.2022 Dr Marisa Nguyen MBBS, DCH, MIPH, BSc Dr Marisa Nguyen completed her medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2006. Since then, she has gained experien...ce in a number of areas, including four years training in General Surgery, a Masters of International Public Health and a Diploma of Child Health. Marisa and her family moved to Wollongong in 2015 and now consider the area home. After the births of her own three children, Marisa developed a personal interest in breastfeeding medicine and infant feeding support. She has completed further studies in this area and is currently working towards her Lactation Consultant qualification. Marisa feels passionately that women should be well informed and well supported in their feeding choices. This process ideally starts during pregnancy and continues through the first year of a baby's life, and beyond. Outside of work, Marisa enjoys cooking and spending time with her young family. 17.01.2022 International visitors - Vascular The Wollongong Hospital Vascular Surgery department hosted a group of international visitors last month for an International V...enous Workshop. Eight doctors from Korea, Thailand and Singapore attended the education event, which was coordinated by health products and technology company, Boston Global. The event kicked off with a dinner which included presentations on Wollongong Hospital's leading-edge treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis patients - AngioJet Thrombectomy - and a number of patient case studies. The following intensive day involved viewing of a number of live patient cases, and further presentations by Wollongong hospital Vascular surgeons. "We are very grateful for the dedicated efforts of our surgeons, nursing, and radiology staff for your hard work in making workshops like this a success," said Kate Fish, Co-Director, Division of Surgery. "This was an important event to have. We are a specialist service for treating DVT, and it is important that we share this knowledge to improve patient outcomes world-wide." Matthew Woolven, the Boston Scientific Wollongong Representative who helped coordinate the workshop said, "Wollongong Hospital truly is a centre of excellence for vascular surgery, especially DVT treatment and thrombectomy."

11.01.2022 State of the art ! Dr Nguyen recently attended a workshop on the use of endoluminal atherectomy devices with particular emphasis on the Jetstream device. H...e travelled to Alburqueque in New Mexico, America, to spend time with Dr Steve Henao, a Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at the Heart Hospital of New Mexico. Dr Henao is a world leader in the use of endoluminal atherectomy for peripheral vascular disease. Dr Nguyen observed Dr Henao as he was operating and had ample opportunity to discuss different techniques and strategies with him. At the end of this workshop Dr Nguyen has said he feels more knowledgeable and confident in the use of these cutting edge devices. He looks forward to applying these skills to achieve better outcomes for patients in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven health district.

I would like to thank all of my patients for your well wishes and understanding during th...e past few months as I get ready to take some time off. I have full confidence leaving you in the extremely capable hands of Dr Nguyen and Dr Amir - Nezami. During this period I will continue my role as head of the vascular department at Wollongong Hospital and will be on call for emergency cases, especially the PE interventional service. 07.01.2022 A HUGE welcome to Dr Taraneh Amir-Nezami who will be covering Dr Villalba's maternity leave at both the public and private hospitals as well as her private room...s. Taraneh is a Sydney based Australian trained and qualified vascular and endovascular surgeon with more than 15 years of medical experience both nationally and internationally. She obtained accreditation from the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and became an AMC graduate in early 2006 and soon after took up a senior resident medical officer position at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. Most of her Vascular surgery training time has been spent working in outstanding Australian teaching and tertiary hospitals including St Vincent’s Sydney, Prince of Wales, Royal Prince Alfred, Alfred Health (VIC), Concord, Wollongong and St George hospitals. Taraneh’s intensive training in high volume vascular centers has provided her with extensive experience in all areas of vascular disease and a well-rounded Open and Endovascular surgical skill set. She has a special interest in minimally invasive arterial and venous surgery and is committed to provide compassionate patient-centered and evidence based care to every patients. She believes that involving patients in their care is paramount to achieving a superior clinical outcome. She looks forward to having a rewarding career and working closely with Dr Villalba during her time off and will ensure delivery of high standard patient care.

04.01.2022 Dr Villalba appointed to the Court of Examiners Dr Laurencia Villalba, Head of Department (HoD) of Vascular Surgery at Wollongong Hospital, recently became the... FIRST EVER female assessor in the Court of Examiners in Vascular Surgery, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). She also secured the position of Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong. When A/Prof Villalba was approached by a highly respected senior colleague about joining the select and prestigious RACs Court of Examiners, she says it was too flattering an invitation to turn down. Of her appointment as Associate Professor, she says "I've always loved teaching and it felt like a natural progression of my surgical career. Carrying this title also makes people pay more attention - helping to get things done, and achieve goals that help improve care of our patients." A/Prof Villalba's career has been moving forward in leaps and bounds, with her appointment as HoD of Vascular Surgery also only occurring a few short months ago. "I like to be challenged and thrive off change," she said.
