19.01.2022 Is poor sleep hindering your weight loss efforts? If you're trying to lose weight, you might be surprised to learn that your sleeping patterns are just as important as diet and exercise. Several studies have linked poor sleep with weight gain and a higher BMI. We all differ when it comes to how much sleep we need, but research suggests that changes in weight start to occur when people get fewer than 7 hours a night.... Research also suggests that poor sleep is linked to increased appetite, likely due to changes in two important hormones leptin and ghrelin, that regulate hunger. Leptin is released from fat cells and is responsible for suppressing hunger, it signals to the brain we are full. Ghrelin, on the other hand is released in the stomach and tells the brain we are hungry. Furthermore (if this isn't enough), poor sleep is associated with higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol which can increase appetite as well. Its pretty clear that sleep can dramatically alter the bodies response to food. Are you sleeping enough?
