17.01.2022 The Laverton festival committee appreciate the support we receive from the Community Bank of Bendigo and all they do with assisting our local sporting group and community groups. Our local Community Banks understand it has been an incredibly difficult time for our community. Businesses, sporting clubs, schools, groups and individuals have been impacted in countless ways by this pandemic. The most recent round of community grants is being extended to the end of May, with a vie...w that this extension will provide you the time needed to get your applications in order. Now, more than ever, we have to think about what we will need when this is over. If you are wondering how it all works, please contact Melissa Longo at [email protected] or call 0430430824 See more

13.01.2022 Great competition run by three very talented locals

13.01.2022 Dear skaters and families, what a year 2020 has been. Everyone has endured so much and still are. Our thoughts are with you all. It is with frustration, sadness... and disappointment we announce that our family business, Laverton Skate Centre, will not be continuing at the premises in Oakdene Grove, concluding nearly 8 years of our tireless effort, to put back on the map (what was at the time) a neglected, near forgotten roller rink. At this stage, we aim and plan to continue some of our skating initiatives for the local community at another location and will post future developments. We express our utmost thanks to our wonderful staff and all who supported our efforts since March 2013. We thank our loyal customers, regular skaters and all who have joined us for birthday parties, often year after year. We thank parents for patiently sitting rinkside for hours on end, with our famous crinkle cut chips and seasoned wedges (or by filling the time playing our video games) while their children became a new generation of skaters. We thank the many original Laverton skaters who returned to the rink with their children (or their skates). We thank a long list of skaters who believed in our vision and regularly travelled from interstate to skate with us. We also thank the pivotal international skaters, coaches and DJ's who supported and participated in our vision. We thank the coaches and volunteers who contributed via rink and club structures for junior inline hockey, junior and adult roller derby, artistic skating, learn to skate classes and inline slalom freestyle. During our period of operation since March 2013, we have proudly innovated, pioneered, entertained and supported. We proudly raised tens of thousands of dollars, fundraising for the Royal Children's Hospital at Kid's Day Out, with staff and skaters volunteering their time at our huge popup roller skating rink over a 4 year period. We were an integral part of establishing Melbourne's first ever junior roller derby club. Despite decades of legacy, we established the very first artistic skate club aligned with the centre for state competition. Our inline skate and slalom coaches represented Australia at the World Roller Games last year. We pioneered Australia's first ever rhythm & jam skating workshops in a rink setting and then aligned these casually within similarly pioneered R&B skate sessions, now emulated across the country. We also pioneered industry skate sessions in Australia that saw skaters fly or drive to skate with us from all but one state in Australia. We achieved all this - and more - in what we called "the little rink that could". Roller skating never went away. Roller rinks and skaters have remained for decades and the growth in interest during lockdown was no surprise to our industry. Years of persistence, hard work and coordination by roller rinks worldwide has been primary fuel for this growth and all indications were that 2020 was set to deliver the largest growth interest in roller skating in a very long time. Our industry was absolutely correct. We are encouraged that skaters, both new and experienced, have maintained this growth in interest throughout 2020 by skating outdoors, tennis courts, parks, garages, car parks, spare rooms, pretty much anywhere skateable. However - in reading this on our page, you already know that skating at a roller rink is a unique experience. Even though we at Laverton have now lost the opportunity to participate in this growth, we strongly encourage you to continue your support of roller rinks as they are allowed to reopen. These roller rinks are all unique in their own way. Roller rinks have been in this for the long haul. Roller rinks need your support and they are best placed to support YOU as a skater. As Melbourne (or anywhere) proceeds to emerge from lockdown and it's restrictions, we strongly encourage you to continue maintaining safe practices, to avoid further frustration, pain, suffering or loss, be it personal; or cultural. In the spirit of how we used to close all of our sessions...: "Thank you and take care". From all of us at Laverton Skate Centre.
