17.01.2022 "Seats in restaurants now come at a premium. "The feeling of normality for some people is being able to make their own choices rather than being told what they... have to eat." "In a way, it’s given us an opportunity to completely reset and work out a way to manage the new situation." Some key folk in WA's hospitality industry were kind enough to share their thoughts on the first 10 days of reopening out west. Lots of things for both guests and the industry to think on.

13.01.2022 *Important PSA* There are two major chains that control the majority of wine sales in this country. They’re the same duopoly that provide most of our groceries.... You know who they are. I used to work as a wine buyer for one of them, and here is the truth. The reality is that around 80% of the brands you see on the shelves are either owned by one of four gigantic wine companies, or ‘brands’ created by the chains themselves to give the illusion of choice, and to maximise their profits. All six of these entities make billions of dollars a year in combined profit, and will see 2020 as a year that they broke profit records - not as a horrendous year for society, community and many industries that will never recover. Underneath the big four are a tier of medium sized distributors that can get some of their flagship brands into the chains. Basically, the system works by these suppliers paying kickbacks so they can get their wines in advertising, up the front of the stores, or even just to buy a spot on their shelves. But there are hundreds of independent distributors and wineries that can’t even get an appointment to meet with the merchandise team. If by some miracle they do, they will be pushed to discount wines they can’t afford to, and slash their margins just for an opportunity to be present in the chains. These are the independent distributors that stock a myriad of the most innovative, passion driven producers that love what they do. They are farmers and growers, winemakers with heart and soul. Behind every wine is real people, real families, real regions. It’s not mass produced, every single wine they produce is made with love. Some of these wines are made in tiny quantities, - a few barrels, translating to sometimes as little as 36 cases of wine all up for an entire vintage. This is the true beating heart of the Australian wine industry, and it needs your help. Because of their inability to get into the chains, their lifeblood is the hospitality industry restaurants and bars. Right now, as the hospitality industry has been forced to shut down entirely, they are struggling immensely, with some distributors losing 90% of their business overnight. They also sell to independent wine stores, like us, but we are a small fraction of their overall business. Add to this the unpaid bills that many of the restaurants and restaurant groups have with these suppliers and wineries, which range from a couple of thousand, to several million dollars. This is money that they will never receive, with some hospitality groups outright saying that the suppliers will never see a cent of this outstanding debt. This comes at the worst possible time for all of the independent wineries it is the middle of vintage, and they have all just purchased their fruit from growers to craft their wines. These are all real people, and their livelihood has been decimated. Add to that the devastation of the bushfires, which has resulted in no vintage whatsoever out of Canberra, the Hunter Valley, Gippsland, the King Valley, Beechworth, the Adelaide Hills, parts of central Victoria and the Alpine Valleys. Everyone is suffering right now, and many of our lovely distributors might not survive without our help. These are little independent businesses, who like ourselves, have built themselves from the ground up, and if they are not supported through these times a whole section of Australian agriculture will go down. So instead of lining up and panic buying Pepperjack from the chains, visit an independent winery’s website, or go to one of the many independent retailers around that also need your help right now. Our industry will only survive if we work together, and we get support from the public. We are currently creating a supplier page on our website so that you can click through to the wineries directly, as well as continuing to stock their wines both in our store and on our website. We are stronger together, and we must never forget that. x
