22.01.2022 From LIV Young Lawyers President Alice Cooney - As the global pandemic has hindered the ability of our new Victorian colleagues to enjoy the much-revered court ceremony for admission, the Young Lawyers of the Law Institute of Victoria have prepared a forum to obtain messages of support. We have posed two simple questions, which we ask all admitted members of the Profession to respond to by clicking this link: https://lnkd.in/gRqQgfY 1) What did admission to the profession mean to you? 2) What do you hope admission means for those admitted to the profession in 2020? Please share this initiative with your learned friends using #2020visionforadmission and help us to celebrate our young lawyers!

15.01.2022 Earlier this month, Demetrio Zema caught up with the LIV to share his thoughts and insights on forging your own path as a young lawyer. Being constantly active... is very important. We seek active lawyers at Law Squared. 08.01.2022 This morning, the Victorian Government introduced a Bill to outlaw LGBTQ+ conversion practices. These harmful and damaging practices that attempt to change or s...uppress a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation will be prohibited by the Bill. This Bill sends a powerful message that LGBTQ+ people are whole and valid just as they are, and establishes powerful mechanisms to deal with incredibly harmful practices that LGBTQ+ people endure across Victoria. We hope that the Bill will have broad support in the Victorian Parliament and we see the passage of this world-leading legislation. While no law can fix a complex social problem on its own, this Bill is a great step towards ending the incredible harm caused by attempted LGBTQ+ conversion practices. The Bill has been introduced after comprehensive consultation, and is being welcomed by survivor groups. Full media release here: https://equalityaustralia.org.au/world-leading-lgbtq-conve/

03.01.2022 Today we recognise a pioneering woman in law. On this day in 1905, Grata Flos Matilda Greig became the first woman to be admitted to the Bar in Victoria and the... first to enter the legal profession in Australia. She graduated from Melbourne Law School in 1903. In April that year, through her efforts and those of her lecturer and friends, the Victorian Parliament passed what was dubbed the 'Flos Greig Enabling Bill', to remove some anomalies in the law relating to women, thus permitting her (and subsequent women) to be admitted to legal practice.
