25.01.2022 Scarifier in action

25.01.2022 Why do I need to scarify (de-thatch)? Scarifying is a method of removing the thatch and matter that accumulates in the surface of the soil. This thatch holds the water in the surface and as a result you end up with a shallow rooted lawn which is prone to diseases and a lawn that will require more water during the hot weather. Has your lawn become very thick and hard to mow? ... Do you have to lift the mowing height of your mower? Does your lawn look white and uneven after mowing? If so it’s time to scarify. Best time to scarify October to March for kikuyu, buffalo or couch lawns. Spring and Autumn for rye, fescue (cool climate grasses).

25.01.2022 Now is the perfect time to fertilise your lawn as it comes out of dormancy using a good organic fertiliser such as Dynamic Lifter available at Bunnings. Follow this up in approximately 2 weeks with a granular fertiliser such as Incitec Side Dress available at rural supply stores.

22.01.2022 SAVE ON YOUR WATER BILL Removing thatch out of your lawn by scarifying allows water to move more freely into the soil which encourages the roots to grow deeper. Your lawn will then be less stressed during those hot summer days and will require less water which will save you money on your water bill.

22.01.2022 How to scarify: Ensure your lawn has some moisture in it. Is free of stones and debris which will damage the scarifier blades. Mow your lawn down low. ... Remove all grass clippings. Mark your sprinkler positions so that you don’t damage them with the scarifier. Set scarifier depth. Scarify see instructional videos below. Remove the thatch that has been left on the surface by raking or simply use your catcher mower to collect thatch. Mow again to remove any grass runners that the scarifier has lifted up. Fertilise and water to promote good regrowth. See more

21.01.2022 Now is the time to get rid of those unwanted weeds in your warm season lawns in Victoria and the cooler areas of the country. Currently your kikuyu, couch and buffalo lawns will be looking rather yellow and dormant. This is the perfect time to use a broadleaf herbicide spray on your lawn to kill any weeds which may have invaded it.

17.01.2022 TIME TO ERADICATE BLACK BEETLE If you had Crows and Magpies digging up your lawn last Summer and Autumn you may of had an infestation of Black Beetles. Now is the right time to spray to control their numbers this season. The Black Beetle lavua feed on the root system which is very damaging to the plant, making it impossible for water and nutrient uptake and as a result you can end up with large dead area’s in your lawn. An application of Meridian at 12 grams per 100m2 can be sprayed on but must be watered in with at least 6mm of irrigation to help eradicate the Black Beetle. It is important to do it at this time of the year before they lay there eggs in the soil. A second application in early December may be required if the lawn is heavily infested.

13.01.2022 WATCH OUT FOR FUNGAL DISEASE With the predictions of a wet Spring the conditions will be ideal for fungal disease such as rust fungi. While rust mainly affects rye grass it can affect other grasses as well. Rust will weaken the lawn leaving it looking very unhealthy, so if you see yellow fleckers on the leaf of the grass you will need to treat the lawn. Firstly you will need to remove some of the thatch by scarifying which will allow more air to circulate amongst the grass, then follow up by applying a fertiliser that is high in nitrogen. For lawns with a heavy infestation you may also need to apply a lawn fungicide such as Mancozeb.

11.01.2022 SPRING TIME IS HERE Now that the weather is warming up, it is time to do some maintenance on your lawn in preparation for the warmer months so you have the best lawn in the street. 1. Firstly if you haven’t already done so, it’s not too late right now to use a broadleaf herbicide to get rid of any weeds that have invaded your lawn over winter.... 2. Apply a good organic fertiliser such as ‘Blade Runner’ by Nuetrog to give your soils a good boost as the grass comes out of dormancy. If you have just sprayed your weeds leave it a couple of weeks before applying fertiliser. 3. October is a great time to scarify (de-thatch) your lawn. This will not only get rid of the thick spongy dead matter and encourage new lush growth but will also allow water to penetrate into the soil instead of sitting in the thatch which will save you water. 4. Fertilise with a lawn booster fertiliser. These fertilisers are high in nitrogen which will help with fast recovery after your scarifying works. 5. In the days after scarifying (de-thatching) it is the ideal time to give your lawn a light top dress. This will also help to reduce the thatch level by encouraging soil microbes to feed on the thatch. 6. Early November fertilise with a good slow release fertiliser. I would recommend a product called ‘3-iron’ which is a granular slow release fertiliser with 20% nitrogen, 10% pottasium and 3% iron. This will put your lawn in good stead for the warmer months ahead. TOP DRESSING Using a good free draining sandy loam, simply spread a thin layer over the entire lawn area and rake into the grass making sure most of the grass is standing up through the sandy loam. If you cannot find the right fertiliser Lawn Addiction can supply.
