22.01.2022 The spring season has finally arrived! Spring is generally considered to be the best time of the year to lay turf. This is because the foliage is flourishing and new shoots are sprouting. This will help your turf to quickly establish a deep-root system and thrive throughout the summer. Additionally, the temperature is starting to warm up, and there’s still a chance of reasonable amounts of rainfall to provide water for your lawn to grow. It's time to start to mow the lawn ...up to about 15mm to 25m height. This will let the light and warmth further into the root zone and then allow for increased leaf as days get longer, helping to reduce moisture loss. Aeration is one of basic needs of a lawn, along with a good fertiliser and mowing. Perforation of soil allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. It improves a lawn by reducing compaction and thatch. There are factors that determine if your lawn would benefit from aeration. Light, slow-release fertilising to recommended application rates to assist in helping colour and help your lawn reach its peak. Spread fertiliser evenly for best results use a fertiliser spreader and follow up with a good, deep watering. Top dressing brings many benefits to a lawn that is looking a little dull, including helping to reduce the accumulation of dead grass clippings and stems, known as ‘thatch’. It helps to increase nutrient retention, improves drainage and increases disease and pest resistance. Control weeds from taking over by spraying or hand pulling. If you only have a few weeds, dig them out or for more severe weed problems, try a spray with herbicide. Prune spring-flowering trees and shrubs right after they finish flowering in spring. Trees and shrubs that bloom during summer and into fall are best pruned in later winter or early spring as soon as their annual growth begins. Refrain from fall pruning because it stimulates new growth that could be killed by winter cold. Prune anytime: suckers, water sprouts, branches that are dead, diseased, or damaged. 18.01.2022 Due to the wet weather at the moment, closed until sunshine to dry out the lawns. Please be understanding during this time and hope to see all of you as soon as it is possible. Mowing a wet lawn can make a complete mess and even cause problems like exposing it to disease. Wet grass is not good for the equipment. Water and metal don’t mix, and even corrosion. If not properly cleaned afterwards, wet clumps of grass on the mower blades can lead to rust. If water gets into other ...parts of the mower such as the engine or fuel tank, then corrosion can occur there. It’s best not to mow your lawn when it’s wet, as doing so can be unsafe and cause an uneven, damaged or diseased lawn. Yes, it's better to wait until the lawn is dry again Have a great day!

12.01.2022 Light raining yesterday and today, great for the lawn and garden will start growing as the Summer season comes! With a wet weather ahead it’s the perfect time to do a few garden tips in wet weather. Fertilise the lawn when it rains.... A great thing you can do when it comes to wet weather lawn care is to take advantage of the rain and fertilise. There is one thing to consider here. Some decent rain and fertilising is great, but too much rain and all the nutrients will just be washed away. Garden clean up It is a good time to clean up the yard, pick up broken branches, leaves and debris. Take advantage of the wet soil to remove weeds. The wet soil tends to be loose and less firm than dry soil, making it easier for you to remove weeds and other unwanted plants on rainy days. Take advantage of the wet weather by pulling out weeds and old plants that you no longer want. Use stakes to hold up thin, weak or new plants. The wet weather loosens and softens soil, it’s important for you to provide support for weak or thin plants. Some plants will grow upright but need assistance to withstand the wind, rain, and their own weight. These plants benefit from staking, which provides sturdy support so that the plants can keep growing. Lay mulch The plants need moisture in order to thrive, and wet weather is often a good opportunity for you to trap in the excess rainfall. Once the rain stops, try laying mulch on top of the soil surface to trap in the excess moisture and keep your plants healthy. Stay safe everyone! Micheal Lawn & Hedge Garden Maintenance

10.01.2022 The winter season is here as the temperatures starting to drop, it’s time to consider what the lawn and garden will need to help prepare them for the mild cold and warm days. Preparing your garden for winter is relatively straightforward and will mean that you have the best chance of enjoying thriving blooms come spring. Here are a few tips you can tackle. Trimming and pruning Winter is the optimal time to cut back overgrown shrubs, prune perennial hedges, remove damaged tree... branches and trim ornamental grasses. Shrubs and hedges will leaf out more quickly in the spring if you do hard pruning this time of year. Tree branches damaged by winter weather like storms are more prone to insect and disease infestations, but proper care can help trees repair themselves. Prune roses in mid to late July make sure pruning is complete by early August. Lawn It is a good idea to mow the lawn a little higher up to 30mm height every 3 to 4 weeks. This will give the grass protection from frost. Additionally, longer leaf blades help facilitate optimal photosynthesis which translates to healthier lawns, even if the amount of sunshine is considerably less during winter. Planting Even through the soil is cold, winter is the season to plant bare-rooted trees and shrubs while they are dormant. Mulching For garden beds, adding two inch thick of layer of mulch can provide much-needed protection from the cold weather. Make sure that you remove all weeds from your garden and add organic compost after tilling the soil. Clean up It is extremely important not to leave debris and leaves on your lawn over the winter. Doing so can smother the grass, create disease conditions, and invite insects, mice, and other damaging pests.
