20.01.2022 The team have celebrated 10 years in their home at the clinic on Coghlan road in Subiaco. . In 2010, our small team moved from the Subiaco Business centre to the federation building on Coghlan Road to start a new chapter. It was a big move at the time but the clinic allowed us grow as a team and to be able to help more people. Over time, it has become the central hub for our team and a place we feel at home. ... . Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey along the way. You have all helped to make the clinic what it is today. . The team are looking forward to continuing to provide clinical psychology services to the local community for many years to come. . . . #perthlife #subiaco #lawsonpsychology #clinicforgood #clinicalpsychology See more
20.01.2022 All-or-nothing thinking (aka. black and white thinking) is a thinking trap that involves thinking in two absolute categories. You’re either perfect or a complete failure, right or wrong, good or bad, with no shades of grey in between. For example, you perform below your average on an assessment for university and think I’m a failure or you try out for the local footy team’s A squad and are made a reserve and think I’ll never be good enough. To alter your relationship wit...h these thoughts, remember that thoughts are just words/ sounds/bits of language in our heads. These thoughts are neither true nor false, fact nor fiction, they are just stories (opinions, beliefs, judgements etc.) that our minds like to tell us. Try catching these thoughts and saying Ah, there’s the ‘I’m not good enough’ story, or Ah, there’s the ‘I’m a failure’ story. See more

15.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day. Start a conversation with someone. Just ask, listen and dont judge. Encourage them to explain by asking "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?"... Show that youve listened by repeating back what youve heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. You could say "it sounds like you have been feeling ____________, since/because/ _____________, is that right?" You may not change the world but you could just change the world for one person. 12.01.2022 Parent self-care Put on your oxygen mask before attending to your children Parents can feel overloaded by all the added demands during this time whilst simultaneously trying to manage childrens needs. Remember to put your own oxygen mask on before attending to children. Whether its taking time to call a friend or family member, phoning a support line, stepping out for a cup of tea or breath of fresh air, or asking others for help to look after children, make sure you are... monitoring your own fuel tank and prioritising your own mental health to get through these trying times. Your child is more likely to be able to cope and feel safe if they can see you modelling coping for them.
12.01.2022 We will be taking a short break over Christmas. We will be open until 8 pm on Wednesday 23rd December and then will re-open on Monday 4th January 2021 at 8.30am. 11.01.2022 Magnification and Minimization is a thinking trap that generally involves magnifying other people’s positive attributes/achievements/successes and minimizing your own positive attributes/achievement/success. You can think of minimization as that explaining away process. For example, if a friend is awarded a promotion at work you might think they have a great work ethic and are right for the role whereas if you are awarded a promotion you might think no one else wanted to role that’s the only reason I got the promotion. To challenge this thinking trap ask yourself what would I say to a friend in the same situation? and see if you can say this to yourself in the same kind, compassionate tone.

08.01.2022 Enrollments are now open for our next Break Free from OCD group therapy program due to commence in June 2020. The Break Free from OCD group program for adults experiencing symptoms of OCD. This program is part of an ongoing research project with Curtin University to improve treatment for the disorder - individuals attending the program have the option of participating in this research. Group therapy for OCD is an effective treatment and offers several advantages over individu...al therapy. These include: Increased Motivation: Just as it can be difficult to go to the gym by yourself, it can be difficult to undertake CBT for OCD on your own. Other group members provide encouragement to face fears and you may even help inspire others to change too. The shared experience of tackling OCD can be a very powerful experience. Cost-effectiveness: Group therapy is more cost-effective than individual therapy for OCD. Social support: Much suffering stems from the feelings of isolation caused by OCD symptoms. Group therapy allows clients to see that they are not alone and that others are struggling with similar challenges. In addition, other group members often have great hints and tips for coping with OCD. Our next group program will commence in June 2020. The program runs run for 10 weekly, 2-hour sessions plus a follow up session one month after the group finishes. Want to find out more? 06.01.2022 Surviving Christmas Tip With the tumultuous year that has been 2020, it may be even more tempting than usual to create the perfect Christmas this year. However, striving for perfect will only lead to added pressure, stress, anxiety and even disappointment at an already stressful time of year. So rather than striving for prefect, try setting realistic expectations for your celebrations this year. For example, if you know that when your extended family gathers together t...here tends to be tension, clashes of personality or disagreements, rather than striving for a perfect family lunch, strive for an enjoyable family lunch while accepting and making room for any uncomfortable moments that may arise. If you’re preparing a meal for your family rather than striving for a perfectly amazing spread, aim for a tasty and enjoyable meal and allow room for an imperfection or two. After all, Christmas is about spending time with family and loved ones, not striving for an unachievable perfect.

05.01.2022 Shoulding and Musting is a thinking trap that involves placing inflexible rules on your own and others behaviours; rules which are often setting the bar too high and are unrealistic to achieve. When we violate a rule we hold for our own behaviour we often experience guilt, for example, imagine you hold the rule I should go to the gym more and I shouldn’t eat carbs and then you skip the gym and eat a bowl of pasta how might you feel? When others violate a rule you hold for... the behaviours of others you often feel annoyed, angry or restful. For example, imagine how you would feel if you held the rule people should keep their opinion to themselves and someone tried to engage you in a discussion on a controversial topic or tried to give you some constructive feedback. When you notice yourself shoulding or musting try and bring some flexibility into the rule by softening it to something like It would be nice if., or I would prefer it if.

04.01.2022 Surviving Christmas Tip In the lead up to Christmas Day and the New year it can be easy to find yourself becoming overwhelmed and caught up in the smaller details of the day and bigger resolutions for the New Year. Remember to take a moment to step back, take a breath, and reflect on what really matters to you. ... It might be spending time with friends and/or family, reconnecting with someone that you care about, giving yourself a much needed break, having a nice meal, being looked after, or just allowing yourself to have a fun-filled day. Try to keep this bigger picture in mind and put your energy into the things that matter most to you. Written by Dr Caitlin Pearcy, Senior Clinical Psychologist at Lawson Clinical Psychology.

02.01.2022 Today’s thinking trap is Emotional Reasoning, which occurs when we base our view of a situation, ourselves or someone else entirely on our emotions/ how we feel about something when there is no other evidence to support this. Simply put, I feel x, therefore x must be true. For example, have you ever felt anxious or had a gut feeling and thought I feel like something bad is going to happen, so I won’t go out with my friends tonight. Or, I feel angry, so this person must have been rude. To challenge emotional reasoning look at the evidence for the thought (evidence which would stand up in a court of law) and the evidence against the thought. Alternatively, ask yourself If I were not feeling this way, how else might I view the situation?.

01.01.2022 Today’s thinking trap is Catastrophising. This thinking trap involves blowing things out of proportion and viewing the situation or outcome as the worst thing possible, unacceptable or intolerable. For example, you have applied for a job and not been offered an interview. and think My resume must not be very competitive, which spirals to even if I do get offered an interview I’ll crack under the pressure, which in turn spirals to I’m never going to get a job. To chall...enge catastrophising thoughts, notice and label them as such and apply the brakes-Remember that you are getting ahead of yourself and you don’t know how things are going to turn out. Try allowing your thoughts to come and go on their own without hooking into them. You can do this by imagining your thoughts as leaves floating by on a stream, as cars travelling on the freeway, or as clouds floating in the sky. See more
