25.01.2022 The Australian War Memorials $498 million extensions should not proceed. They cannot be justified. The money would be better spent on direct benefits to veterans and their families and on other national institutions.
24.01.2022 For those who like constitutional law (thats all of you, right?), heres the preamble to ours. Find out more at tonights Lawyers For Peace kick off: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/lawyers-for-peace-kick-off-
24.01.2022 Awe-inspiring insight into the life of activist John Lewis and making change through non-violent protest.
22.01.2022 to our friends at Medical Association for Prevention of War. We join their call for a global ceasefire during the Covid-19 pandemic. You can too: https://secure.avaaz.org/campaign/en/global_ceasefire_loc/
21.01.2022 A defence strategy for the post-Covid world should focus on what unites us, not what divides us. $270 billion could change the way we invest in foreign aid, social housing, welfare, climate change and all of the major challenges we face in the decades to come. Instead, this announcement would start an arms race in which nobody wins.... Australia is better than this.
20.01.2022 Fun equipment decisions. This is how defence analyst Peter Jennings describes spending $270 billion on killing machines when questioning the Minister. Gross.
19.01.2022 Today is the International Day of Peace. Fittingly, this years theme is shaping peace together. In many ways, this is what Lawyers for Peace is all about- shaping peace isnt just for our government leaders, but a job for all of us. We want to know your story - how have people in your community been shaping peace together in these tough times? Since our AGM a few weeks ago, the Committee has been working hard getting the nuts and bolts of our organisation together. It ca...n be frustrating sometimes working on things that seem a bit removed from action, but we know its the most important thing to get right in order for our organisation to work and have longevity. Keep an eye out in your inbox in the next few weeks- we will be advertising some exciting positions in the organisation for some of our talented members to take up! In normal times, International Day of Peace would be a day of activism and action for Lawyers for Peace. Nothing is usual about this year. In a statement of ahead of this day, the UN wrote: For the United Nations, 2020 was already meant to be a year of listening and learning. To mark its 75th anniversary, the UN has invited millions of people worldwide to join UN75, the largest and furthest-reaching global conversation on building the peaceful and prosperous future that we want. As we struggle to defeat COVID-19, your voice is more important than ever. In these difficult times of physical distancing, this International Day of Peace will be dedicated to fostering dialogue and collecting ideas. The world will be invited to unite and share thoughts on how to weather this storm, heal our planet and change it for the better. Even though we may not be able to stand next to each other, we can still dream together. The 2020 theme for the International Day of Peace is Shaping Peace Together. Celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic. Stand together with the UN against attempts to use the virus to promote discrimination or hatred. Join us so that we can shape peace together. What are you going to do today to commemorate this day? What about spending time reading about the length our government has gone to hide criticism of $1.3 billion arms deal? Or read about the history of Australias frontier wars? You could call your local federal MP and tell them how important to you it is that Australia takes a leading role in promoting peace. Or even just make a cup of tea for your house mate that has been bugging you like crazy all lockdown. Peace comes in all its forms! Let us know what your get up to! https://www.deadlystory.com/p/culture/history/Frontier_wars https://www.theguardian.com//coalition-trying-to-stop-audi https://www.un.org/en/observances/international-day-peace
18.01.2022 This is an astonishing acknowledgement. Once Justice Breretons report is finalised in coming weeks, the Australian government must be open with the findings so the public is fully informed about the extent of SAS misconduct.

14.01.2022 On August 6, 1945, a single atomic bomb destroyed our city. Rumour at the time had it that nothing will grow here for 75 years. And yet, Hiroshima recovered, becoming a symbol of peace." - Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui.
14.01.2022 Theres one thing we know about arms races: everybody loses.
13.01.2022 When a staggering 29% of former ADF members say worth is not living, putting funding earmarked for the Australian War Memorial expansion into supporting their mental health instead is the responsible thing to do.
11.01.2022 Australia should be a force for peace between China and the US, not encouraging a new Cold War by entering an exorbitantly expensive arms race
10.01.2022 The soldier stands over the man, pointing his rifle at him and shouting repeatedly to a nearby senior colleague: You want me to drop this c***? Nobody is heard telling him to stop. He then shoots the man several times, killing him instantly. It is not clear whether this shooting is among the 55 separate incidents that Justice Brereton is investigating.... Justice Breretons report must be made public as soon as possible. If people have committed offences, they should be charged and if found guilty punished.
07.01.2022 You wont find these womens names in the history books or on the war memorials. But to me they are the real heroes. Women and girls account for the vast majority of those impacted by war, often with less say in whether conflict turns violent. We can and must do better. #iwd2020

04.01.2022 The laws of war exist to save lives and reduce suffering. The horrific allegations outlined by Four Corners need full and proper investigations and sanctions. The SAS is not above the law.

02.01.2022 Its been displayed by the Ku Klux Klan, by racist organisations, American Nazis have used it. Im stunned that an Australian special forces unit was displaying [it] ignorance is not an excuse." - Hal Johnston, former lieutenant-colonel with the US Army. Wow.
01.01.2022 As residents in Australia, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.
01.01.2022 If there was ever a good time to join military exercises in the Pacific, now is not that time.
