25.01.2022 A view from space... A super special moment captured from the final ceremony on the TOGETHER Retreat. A mix of indigenous with dominant culture, staff, practitioners, volunteers and a whole lotta hands. . There might be no greater healing power than that of connection ... in all of its forms. - (said someone wise and wonderful.) .... It was an honor and a pleasure to be part of such a ridiculously fabulous experience. Beautiful from @hugmedia See more

25.01.2022 Clinic closed for the weekend. We missed our flight to Vietnam so did a quickie visa run mission to KL instead, ate nasi campur at the airport and then woke up here not so terrible

24.01.2022 I have a beautiful old friend @oni_keeperofthehearth who is a host and super talented and forever curious interviewer on @pbb_media - an awesome podcast discussing the depths of pregnancy, birth and beyond from a wide range of different perspectives. I recently listened to an interview with Steven Kennedy, a father and founder of birthing dads about his birth and post partum experience and the anxietys and challenges faced by men and the primary support that we forget abou...t. A must listen for those expecting or planning. I was also lucky enough to be invited to chat with Oni talking Endometriosis and pregnancy. You can listen over at @pbb_media

24.01.2022 Lather your eyeballs OR if you cant read, then download the audio! Gift it for Chrissy and put it on your 2020 list of NY resolutions. This is one of the best books Ive ever read! Sleep God ~ Matthew Walkers sleep education should be in our drinking water and if reading his book or watching his YouTube clips doesnt get you into bed and off to sleep for at least 7 hours, sans coffee, booze or screens then (Im sorry) but (as he advises) you are doomed. Even if you thin...k you sleep good, the quality of your sleep is so so important to get right. Unfortunately you cannot just sleep when ya dead. . Why we sleep covers sleeping pills, melatonin, stress, the affects of alcohol, caffeine, waking early, sleeping late, screens, memory recall, cognitive function, cognitive decline as well as myth busting everything snooze related. . Included is a generously healthy amount of science for those like me who appreciate the evidence and stats.. and the guy who narrates the audio book has the best voice to make you feel like youre an academic scholar when discussing REM, nREM, neurobiology, circadian rhythms and sleep statistics etc etc etc. Add this to the list!! Sweet dreams

21.01.2022 No more fasting!! Today we break the 72 hour fast of 7 day Healing retreat (round 2)... But why the hell are we Fasting IN BALI?? Fasting allows the body to rest and heal... and we are on a healing retreat so it makes perfect sense. There is bucketloads of literature to support the plethora of health benefits associated with fasting. Particularly after 72hours when the real therapeutic benefits kick in.... A really basic understanding of Autophagy is a cellular process of clearing out dead and damaged cellular material. It is activated by stress and therefor is sped up in prolonged fasting. By getting rid of old, damaged cellular junk, we make space for the production of new healthy cells. Correctly re-feeding our bodys after a prolonged fast gives us an opportunity to recode the pattern of new cellular regeneration. FASTING CAN HELP YOU REWRITE YOUR FUTURE HEALTH! This process is anti inflammatory, anti-aging, increases neurogenesis, as well as specific benefits for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, pain and degenerative brain conditions. The list is long and is growing. . The guests on the Bali healing retreats are each here for their own personal, medical and wellbeing reasons. Ranging from pain and inflammation, endometriosis, chronic digestive issues, emotional and mood stuff, detox, weight/ fluid retention, to fasting safely and to kickstart a clean and healthy change. Our role as naturopaths is to provide a safe, stress free and nourishing environment with complete naturopathic support to get max benefits from their time here, which is really tricky at home when you work, have kids, are in pain, depressed or addicted to food and shit eating habits. For the more nuts and bolts science of fasting, follow my girl crush @foundmyfitness for fasting, sleeping, big brain health nerd stuff AND check out my friend Sinny @fastingthehealerwithin currently fasting for 40days/ forever. Im currently on my own healing adventure and sliding into 15 days water fast. (Any ketone Wizards know why my blood ketones havnt risen above 3.2 in 15 days?) Ive never been so excited for green juice and broth @notnotdannyjohnson

19.01.2022 Hey pals I have been asked to return to Elcho Island to assist @helenpadarin and work with the Yognlu people I spent time with last month. Unfortunately there is no extra $$ to support the naturopathic volunteers needed at this time and so, Im reaching out to anyone that might be able to assist with funding and have set up a fundly account with at end of post.... Please take 2 mins to read this post and if any of it resonates with you and you have some spare pocket money to donate, please do. Your support is hugely appreciated. Thanking you muchly! Its been 1 month since I volunteered at the TOGETHER retreat, with @ourhopeforhealth , aimed at tangibly addressing the health crisis faced by a group of the Indigenous community of Elcho island, NT. The indigenous group I worked with are beautiful people, stuck in a situation of poor health, poor health education and poor management of their conditions. Never complaining but faced with and witness to illnesses that shorten the lives of their loved ones before them. Over the course of the retreat, through the detox program we ran, many of the patients were able to come off meds they had been told that they would be on for life!! Tears of Joy were daily, participants describing being pain free, able to move freely, new found happiness and feelings of Hope for their future and the future of their families. My experience on the retreat has profoundly changed my life, my outlook on health care and it has made me aware of the dire straights situation of the health of people I now care very deeply for. Im still in contact with my patients and adopted family, with updates on their daily food diary, exercise and feelings of joy for being able to stay committed to their program. Directing Naturopath @helenpadarin returns to Elcho in 10 days and needs additional practitioner care to assess and treat the Yolngu patients, requesting my volunteer services. YOUR support is hugely appreciated by me personally. @hopeforhealth and the Yolngu people. The link to donate is in my bio. All contributions welcome. No $$ too big or small. Thanking you xx

18.01.2022 Whaddup 3rd trimester. Despite the starfish/ dead-to-the-world pic, we’ve landed in 3rd trimester and feeling fly and so bloody fabulous with the universe growing inside. I wanted to share the weird and wonderful things that were NOT expected in pregnancy thus far, that your friends forget to tell you about and you only find out once you google. The less common than ‘morning sickness’ types of symptoms with a naturopathic twist.... Fluid retention ~ I dodged morning sickness, burger cravings and crazy moods but with 2nd trimester got slammed with hardcore fluid retention issues. Super common in pregnancy. We all get a bit puffy. Less common is what I’ve got going on which is a combo of lipodema/ lymphedema. (Think the Michelin Mans wife ) At this stage I’m managing with diet, exercise, specialist massages with laser treatments, acupuncture and sexy compression leggings with matching arm tights. Fingers crossed it all settles when the pudding is baked. IRON!!~ Get your iron tested!! If you’re low in 2nd trimester you are going to struggle to get it up (so to speak). Your iron requirements continue to grow substantially through pregnancy and you do not want to go into 3rd trimester, labour and then post partUm with low iron. Work with a naturopath to find the best supplement dosage and if you need I’m a total advocate for an iron infusion. It’s a game changer. Eczema ~ I developed eczema all over my tummy, eyes and breasts which google says is normal due to the immune changes the body goes through with the developing foetus. My poor boobies are copping a scratching beating from midnight flare ups. I’m keeping it at bay with topical creams, more healthy fats and extra supplements to support healing and repair. Despite these little niggles. I’m loving every minute. I find it hard to naturopathically support myself and not over analyse every breath. I am working with my fabulous naturopath and super mum Tabitha from @awakenyourhealth - Amazing accupuncturist Caitlin! from @billihealth and magic Megan from @byronbaychiro. I Would love to learn more about others experiences of not so known pregnancy symptoms that I can add to the ‘how to be pregnant bible' x

14.01.2022 MY ENDO STORY. For those unaware of some of the more intimate details of Endometriosis, Id like to share my personal story. Im usually a bit allergic to the super personal public overshare, (apparently not this time) but I think its important to shine a light on the possibilities of what endo can look like for some women, as no two experiences are the same. Im also sharing to acknowledge why Im a fan of fasting and why I encourage fasting as an important tool for inflamm...ation, pain and connecting us to using our food as medicine. The evidence for the benefits of fasting are endless and for me have been life saving. A little bit of medical history.. I grew up with severe asthma and eczema and was on crappy steroid medication until I was 13. Travelling in my early 20s, I got a bad case of Dengue fever and parasites which knocked me around for years. At 24, after a complete hormonal meltdown, we found a brain tumour on my pituitary gland making a mess of everything. Ive always had IBS, but now I know I am a celiac, things are better. AND, in the last 4 years, Endometriosis saw me totally exhausted, in chronic pain and brought with it anxiety and depression. Thankfully that chapter is closed. . My medical history is fairly detailed, giving me a broad range of body & mind experiences and fuelling a pretty passionate fire in me to support others who have health stuff they want to sort out . Particularly women with endometriosis. Whatever I can do to support you! Mainstream medicine continues to blow my mind. Its investigations and treatments have literally saved my life, numerous times. However, is yet to treat me without side effects and yet to provide any cure. But rather, treatments have offered bandaid solutions without getting to the cause. I have overcome all of these chapters in my choose your own health adventure using complimentary medicine. Most recently ridding me of Endometriosis through fasting and herbal medicine. Halle- bloody- lulljah! Above is my endo story. Thanks for reading #endometriosisaustralia #endoeducation #endowarrior

13.01.2022 I have a mini human in my belly. DJ found an ugg boot. & in a minute we will be a mum and a dad.

13.01.2022 A massage a day keeps the Dr away... Day 3 and 24 hours into a 72 hour water fast and our healing guests are KILLING IT! The first time on an extended water fast for all of our participants. We began on juices, broths, Jamu, supplements and heaaaaps of tea. The plan was a 24 hour water fast, but everyone was keen to get serious and so we have.... Starting the day with meditation, yoga and a couple hours walk around the local village, followed by a swim in the pool, laze in the sun and a ridiculously enjoyed 90 min massage.. might be making the ride a little easier. and a sound healing session before bed seems to be working a treat also . . Skin is sweating, bowels are moving and the conversation continues to teach and inspire me. Very thankful!

13.01.2022 A whole lotta love and respect goin down right now

13.01.2022 A call out to all Endo sisters!!! Ive been working on a new project that offers a formalised management and support program for women with endometriosis. To get this bad boy off the ground, I need to chat to women with Endo to make sure what im offering, fits the criteria of every Endo woman. Endo has no cure. No 2 presentations are the same. Its not just a gynaecological condition of heavy and painful periods, it can cause chronic pain all over at any time of the month, an...xiety, depression, exhaustion, poor immune function, IBS, disordered eating and affect employment, relationships, quality of life and increase the chances of infertility. As you can imagine, there is no pill that can cover all of this. Managing Endo can require a shit tonne of commitment and ongoing care from a variety of different places and a team of skilled practitioners. This is not cheap. I took out a 20G loan and spent it in 1 year just to manage my Endo. During this time, I worked and had an income, I had my rent paid for and private health care helped cover a portion of my surgery. I knew more than the average Endo woman and I still spent so much money and time as I fumbled my way through. What I have created is a program to guide and coach women with Endo as they navigate their way through, knowing they feel completely supported as they go. Ive worked SO Hard to manage my Endo to a place I consider to be symptom free and I strive so hard to support those Endo women I work with get to a similar place. There is no one size fits all treatment. But there are definite food, lifestyle and supplement prescriptions that are beneficial universally. This info has been collected, tested, turned into a program and ready to be shared. If you have Endo I would LOVE to chat to you and get your advice on how a program to help manage YOUR Endo would work best for YOU. Pretty please DM me if youd like to be involved. Please pass my details on to other ladies with Endo who may be able to get on board. [email protected]. The information you share will go towards creating a niche program to help other women with Endo! I really look forward to working with you! x

12.01.2022 Welcome to the planet with Mum & Dad, circa 1984

12.01.2022 Dear Sally Mathrick, Just incase you decide to accidentally lose your memory, here is a snap of us in Bali in September 2019. (Youre looking especially glam in that hat darls). .... 10.01.2022 Life, Break in me whatever needs to be broken. Fix my hope of ever being fixed. Use me. Draw every ounce of creativity out of me. ... Help me live a radically unique life, forever forging a never-before-trodden path in the forest. Show me how to love more deeply than I ever thought possible. Whatever I am still turning away from, keep shoving in my face. Whatever I am still at war with, help me soften towards, relax into, fully embrace. Where my heart is still closed, show me a way to open it without violence. Where I am still holding on, help me let go. Give me challenges and struggles and seemingly insurmountable obstacles, if that will bring an even deeper humility and trust in the intelligence of life. Break in me whatever needs to be broken. Help me laugh at my own seriousness. Allow me to find the humour in the dark places. Show me a profound sense of rest in the midst of the storm. Dont spare me from the truth. Ever. Let gratitude be my guide. Let forgiveness be my mantra. Let this moment be a constant companion. Let me see your face in every face. Let me feel your warm presence in my own presence. Hold me when I stumble. Breathe me when I cannot breathe. Let me die living, not live dying. Amen. Jeff Foster, Prayer for the living

08.01.2022 ENDO FOOD There is no one size fits all. Each endo case is different. And so no diet suits all endo women. Here is a list of the food Dos and Donts that are endo aligned across the board. The aim is to then fine tune this to the individual, based on your own personal symptoms, food habits, sensitivities and ethical alignments. 1. REDUCE INFLAMMATION no brainers. X DAIRY... X GLUTEN X SUGAR X Caffeine - sorry X Booze - sorry again. 2. PLANT BASED (primarily) - lotsa Veggies - (dark leafy green are best - broccoli, kale, spinach, lettuces, cabbage, sprouts) Y? - Nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory, alkalising, high fibre, supports oestrogen metabolism - Preferably warm/cooked- less contracting/ constricting on the digestive system. . 3. X GRAINS - can be pro inflammatory - Yes to nuts, seeds, beans, peas, (lentils, chickpeas if they dont make you too farty and painful.) . 4. Lots of healthy EFAs - avos, olive oil, ghee, oily fish, nuts, seeds. . 5. Stay hydrated. Water, herbal tea and lots of it. NEXT. To investigate.. Are you sensitive to histamines or oxalates? Trial removing these from your diet, 1 month at a time. See how you respond. Bon appétit . **This is a Layla hack on the basic Endo food info available. Info is based on clinical experience, personal experience and the prescription of endo specialists. ~ For some, cutting out foods that aggravate Endo is easy as the benefits far outweigh the cost. For others, switching up food is really challenging. Hot tip. Go slow. One at a time. Nail it. Move onto the next. Best advice is to do it with the support of a practitioner to identify what is most important. God speed

05.01.2022 I was recently invited share my personal journey with endometriosis and in particular my experience of chronic pain, both physically and mentally. I work closely with women with Endo whos storys are so much more challenging than mine and in this interview we discuss many of the different shades of what this can look like and how it personally affected me. Anxiety, depression, infertility, pregnancy and the impact endometriosis can have on intimacy. A raw and honest convers...ation about some of the more ugly bits. Thank you to my friend Jin, New Zealand based Osteo, psychosomatic pain therapist and host of the podcast @theartoflisteningtoyourbody for having me. It was a pleasure to join you. Repost from Jin. Episode #15 - My Endometriosis Journey. My guest today @layla_metcalfe is a Naturopath dedicated to helping women with endometriosis. This is her pain story, which thankfully didnt go on for the typical 7 years before getting diagnosed. At times, her life was put on hold because of her dodgy period and symptoms. Periods so heavy that super tampons and a pad werent enough, often waking up to something that resembled a murder scene. Layla found herself on morphine based drugs, experiencing anxiety and depression, being told she was a hypochondriac and that shed be infertile. A host of therapies, therapists, surgery and a $20k loan she burnt through in 1 year in search for a solution, she is now symptom free and pregnant!! Listen in if you have endo or know someone with it. Go follow Layla and send her and her baby some Lots of resources in the podcast notes. iTunes link: https://podcasts.apple.com//the-art-of-liste/id1505741621 Link in @theartoflisteningtoyourbody bio for all other listening platforms.

03.01.2022 A collection of photos shot by @georgiewileman creating constellations by connecting the surgery scars and dating them to document the multiple operations undergone by women with endo. I wish this was a pretty set of pictures, but the reality is they are confronting and should be.. its scary to think of what 1/8 of our ladies could be up for. This is not a womens problem. This is a human problem, potentially affecting approx 1/2 our population- our mothers, sisters, lovers,... daughters. And raising awareness and education about endo is soooo necessary. At this stage laparoscopic surgery (pictured) is the gold standard for diagnosis, as well as possible treatment for unmanageable endo, aiming to remove the return growth of abnormal tissue, abnormally growing outside the uterus. Hence multiple operations. Deep pelvic ultrasound can sometimes identify endo. But not always. It can hide in lots of different and unusual places. A large study published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, identified that 62% of women with endo have repeat surgery averaging less than 2 years for a second surgical procedure. Half of women with Endo have had repeat surgery in less than 5.5 years and 1/5 have had hysterectomy with the removal of 1 or both ovaries. I think diagnosis is important because without diagnosis, how are you to know what you are dealing with? Severity, location as well as all of the other possibilitys that could be causing problems that ultrasound may not detect. Cysts, fibroids, adenomyosis, cancer. If you can grow a baby in there who knows what other crazy things could be going on. I had one surgery. It gave me 4 months relief before endo wreaked havoc again. I worked with a team of therapists to overcome endo and attribute fasting, diet and herbal medicine to have the most benefit for ME. My story is rare!! I treat women with endo regularly looking at diet & lifestyle including meditation and supporting with herbs & nutritional supplements. Would love to know if YOU have endo what your surgery story looks like and happy to answer any questions along with my Accupuncturist guru @jenna_thefertilitysuite

01.01.2022 Its difficult to capture the vibe of these retreats. Its easy on the eye and aesthetically appealing to post a picture of a massage and lazing by the pool. But its hard to capture the intimacy of the work and healing that the guests are unravelling and rewriting while they are here. The physical, nutritional food bit of the retreat involves the cleansing & fasting. (But theres nothing sexy about a picture of a detox broth and no one needs another photo of a green smoothi...e recipe). . My brother texted me and asked me how the massage festival was going? Its sweeet ez bro! but this is not all thats going on dear brother. While we have been meditating, diff types of mindfulness, sleeping, lazing by the pool, sound healing, dips in the ocean AND daily massages... The other more intimate side involves workshops and group processing. Digging deep into our shit and uncovering some more hidden truths that need light shone upon and nurturing to heal. There have been long discussions on ecology and climate change, Dyad processing, intimacy, fear, shame, disordered eating, addiction and clarity of intention. There have been long needed naps, huge emotional releases, tears, laughter and rude awakenings. And from all different walks of life, age and life experiences. I didnt realise I had the knowledge, strength or experience to hold this space as we have. The intimate group dynamic of this retreat has already taught me so much about the power of being a healer, whatever shape or form that takes on. Just purely providing an ear to listen, a shoulder, an unwavering gaze and a hand to hold, is more powerful than any medicine I have tried. Tomorrow we complete the 72 hour water fast. I personally am sailing through day 7. Some are keen to keep going beyond tomorrow. Others are chomping at the bit to get the delicious green juice and broth back in their system . Its great having the small group to allow catering to each persons individual needs. To change or not to change, that is the question. . There is still one spot on retreat 2, starting Sept 8th-14th . AAnd a possibility for another set in November. Let me know if youre keen.

01.01.2022 Endometriosis and Complimentary Medicine (CM). If you have endo and you are trying to navigate without a complimentary therapist, thats your first point of call. Research shows that 75% of Oz women are using CM to help manage endo. Acupuncture proving the most popular for pain, yoga for exercise and CBD for anxiety. The regularity of all types of CM treatments an important component. eg. 2 x weekly treatment for 8 weeks reducing pain scores by around 50% compared to having no... treatment. CM also improves overall quality of life scores with women feeling better emotionally and more able to cope with their symptoms, particularly depression. I attribute my personal experience of beating endo to naturopathic practices including regular fasting, anti-inflammatory diet and herbs and supplements. To compliment my efforts and for long term endo prevention I add cupping and acupuncture to the mix. (Pictured). . When selecting a CM practitioner, look for those who have experience in treating endo, have endo, and or specialise/ post graduate study- (sexy social media doesnt mean they know what they are the best person for the job. Hunt around.) I have/ had endo and have been in private practice for 10 years and for all my patients I offer complete naturopathic support to include a personalised diet and nutrition protocol (not one size fits all), fine tuning supplements and prescription medication and encourage getting a fresh set of blood pathology for assessment. (A GP has 15 mins and sometimes can accidentally miss things.) . From there, pick the most aggravating or self limiting symptoms and expand your support team. Eg for pain = acupuncture | depression = psych/ therapist | adhesions and mobility = physio/ Chiro/ osteo | Stress= yoga meditation. Sometimes it takes a team to get on top of things. But its totally worth it! For Sydney siders looking for acupuncture/ cupping, I work with @jenna_thefertilitysuite who specialises in womens repro and fertility and is incredible! Got any questions, hot tips or amazing therapists you recommend? x . #endometriosisaustralia #endoawareness
