14.01.2022 Sailing Success Stories Start with Sabot #Repost @tslingsby with @make_repost Mum just found this pic of little old me back in 1995. Why I am facing backwards, I don’t know. Why my eyes are closed, I don’t know. But I seem to be having a great time. When I first started sailing racing I was teamed up with my sister. She had to pay me 20cents per race to stay on board the boat and not swim to shore. Even after I started enjoying it out there, I would not tell her so she kept on paying

07.01.2022 Cherubs getting ready and off racing

07.01.2022 This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, ‘choose to challenge’, seems to perfectly describe the Cherub class. The Cherub fleet challenges sailors to com...pete on an equal playing field, regardless of their gender. This culture of inclusivity has fostered a unique on-water race environment filled with friendly competition and camaraderie. Off-water this exists between sailors and spectators alike. As NSW Comitttee member and long-term skiff sailor, Andrew Glassock put it in his summary of the 2019/2020 Cherub Nationals Championships, I don’t think there is any other open skiff class that is as successful as the Cherub class in gender equality and promoting female participation in sailing. Certainly, the rate of female participation in Cherubs is unrivalled in other Australian skiff classes. During their last national titles at Darling Point Sailing Squadron, before COVID-19, 15 out of the 29 helms within the participating fleet were female. Perhaps more excitingly, four crews were comprised entirely of women. Not only did our talented female Cherub sailors ‘choose to challenge’ at this event; they rose to the occasion. In fact, every perpetual trophy bar one was taken home by a mixed crew. Women have long had a history in the Cherub class, but female participation has grown exponentially within the last decade. To some extent, this may be a credit to the design of the boat, which allows women and men to enter the class on an equal playing field. It is few who can resist the temptation of a fast and agile craft prone to exhilarating downwind sailing. If you ask Cherub sailors though, they will happily tell you their gender balance is more so a testament to the encouraging and open-minded temperaments of both the men and women who represent the fleet. Lily Peel has skipped her boat ‘Short, Tired and Emotional’ for six seasons, sailing with female crew Cathy Pagett for five of those years. For Lily, the question of gender equity within the fleet has never really crossed her mind. She believes that whilst she may have a few more swims than some of her heavier male counterparts in a 25-knot southerly, being a woman in the fleet has never been a point of contention or disadvantage. For Lily, there are not female and male Cherub sailors - there are just Cherub sailors. We are so proud and privileged to have a gender-equal fleet and strive to promote gender equality in sailing as one of the pillar stones of our Association. We would like to take this occasion to thank all the beautiful women in our fleet and encourage others to join in the fun. May we continue to foster an inclusive and diverse fleet for generations to come. #internationalwomensday2021 #skiffsailing #australiancherubs #ChooseToChallenge

04.01.2022 It's with sadness that I inform the Club of the passing of Helen Molesworth this morning in her 97th year at Royal North Shore Hospital. Helen, who was born in 1923, was a great supporter of LC12ftSSC from a very early age. During the Naming Ceremony for the Ted Griffith Helen had some very interesting and funny stories to tell of her years at the Club. She started sailing in a 12ft skiff at a very young age crewing for her brother. Back then the role of the smallest crew w...as to just sit in the bottom of the boat and bail out the water. This was not a job that Helen overly enjoyed but being as tough as she was she was always there on race days! She also told us that the Woodford Bay mark was just that, it was set right up against the western shore of Woodford Bay because back then Helen remembers there being only one boat moored in the bay. A little different now. While she might have stopped sailing with her brother she always had the Club in mind. Helen was instrumental in helping the Club acquire our two Arvor response boats and her goal to see more women in sailing was a passion of hers. The Helen Molesworth Medal is an acknowledgement of her long support of the Club and it was her desire to see it awarded to the Club member who excelled at volunteering and helping at our Club. While she might not have visited us at the river very much over the last few years she always brought a sparkle and a laugh when she did come down. As a Club we're all better off for the support and the friendship that she showed all of us and today the Club has lost one of it's finest Members. Max Gundy - Commodore
