25.01.2022 Breastfeeding study....
25.01.2022 Many mothers and those who support them do not know that they can experience negative emotions associated with breastfeeding. In modern society, breastfeeding i...s often used - problematically - to exemplify myths about motherhood and maternal love and is bound up with ideas of what makes a 'good mother'. In this context nursing aversion and agitation - intense, distressing feelings that are experienced by the mother during breastfeeding - can be both unexpected and hugely upsetting, particularly when women may have already overcome significant challenges in order to breastfeed. In When Breastfeeding Sucks Zainab Yate examines what we know about this poorly understood aspect of infant feeding, in a carefully researched discussion that will be valuable for individual mothers who may be suffering, and the breastfeeding supporters who work to support them. The book is available here: https://www.pinterandmartin.com/when-breastfeeding-sucks Or for free international delivery here: https://www.bookdepository.com/When-Breastfee/9781780666853

20.01.2022 Kangaroo Care in the NICU empowering parents..... Having a baby in the NICU can be isolating. And partners often feel like just a visitor as the birthing parent may have a larger role like providing milk and having more frequent visits with the baby.... Partners can be more involved by providing baby with much needed skin-to-skin contact in the NICU. This can help your partner have a more empowered experience, and bond with baby while playing a significant role for baby. Skin-to-skin contact has been proven to have remarkable benefits, especially for NICU babies. Skin-to-skin contact: increased quiet sleep state more stable thermoregulation more stable heart rate more stable respiratory rate oxygen saturation promotes longer nursing duration and exclusivity AND MORE! 18.01.2022 David Clark LLB (Hons), UNICEF, is an international lawyer working with the Nutrition Section, UNICEF, New York. Since 1995, David has assisted more than 60 countries in drafting legislation to implement the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, and has been instrumental in bringing a human-rights based approach to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. His takeaway messages at his presentation at #ILCA2020: - Conflicts of interest influe...nce the health care system and undermine breastfeeding - They can damage professional reputations - The original International Code was weak in how it addressed conflicts of interest but WHA resolution 69.9 in 2016 provides clear, strong information on how to avoid conflicts of interest. Two key links: WHO's policy brief on WHA 69.9: https://www.who.int/nutrition/netcode/WHA-Policy-brief.pdf David Clark's article "Avoiding Conflicts of Interest in the Field of Infant and Young Child Nutrition" in the World Nutrition Journal (2017): https://worldnutritionjournal.org/index.//article/view/146 The recording will be available as a part of the #ILCA2020 recordings. 09.01.2022 The early years are a marathon, not a sprint. Not very catchy is it. Not an attractive slogan. Not something that's going to get people queuing up to hear more.... '5 steps to sleeping through'. '5 steps to your baby not needing to be held.' '5 steps to no more tantrums.' '5 steps to an independent child.' Now people are interested. Parents are often sold/told that it's a sprint. And that if it starts to turn into a marathon, they've gone wrong somewhere. When things take longer or are harder than 'advertised', they feel worse. Expectations are so out of whack, from the wrong information to begin with. What if all parents were told that things take T I M E. That they're MEANT to take time. That there are no quick fixes or quick solutions. That babies need to be soothed by you. That toddlers need help to calm down. That children need help to calm down. That there is no 'age' when parents need to start getting tougher otherwise they will 'never learn.' That the way brains learn to do those things you so want, isn't via tough love, but by the presence of a soothing caregiver, who loves them. That there are no short cuts to a developed, mature brain. That their needs change. That you're not stuck. That nothing lasts forever. That all stages and phases pass. That independence comes first from dependence. That providing love, security, closeness, safety and being there is always the answer. No matter the age. That brain development is important. That brain development happens best when you're there to meet your littles ones needs. That connections are being made for how your little one learns to manage themselves, others and the world. That this is an important job!!!! It's a marathon. That means you don't have to go flat out. You can amble along slowly. You can take each day at a time. You can take each night as it comes. You don't need to live out 6 months at once in your head - that's not helpful. You only need to do today, and you can do today, even if it's hard. And in all of those 'one day at a times', huge things are happening in your little one's growing brain. Things that take time and that are meant to take time. It's called 'the early years' not the early months for a reason. Just take it one - day - at - a - time.
