25.01.2022 Amazing news today. Thank you Matt Kean MP and the many incredible wildlife warriors that have helped make this happen- Ricardo Lonza, Sue Gay and many others, including Total Environment Centre. Let the submissions roll in!

25.01.2022 Australias 20 World Heritage sites are at risk The federal government is trying to walk away from its responsibility to protect and conserve these areas. Thi...s is an absolute disgrace. We need international support to urge our Environment Minister, Sussan Ley MP, to strengthen our national environment laws, not hand over federal powers to state governments. To mark National Threatened Species Day, we have joined forces with other conservation groups to request international support from UNESCO before its too late. 23.01.2022 IT’S A START! Polystyrene packaging around whitegoods will be banned by the middle of next year, under the federal government’s national plastics plan. Cups and food packaging made from polystyrene will also be banned by December 2022 There will also be a push for councils to unify their waste collection bins into a single, nationwide system. A taskforce will also be established to tackle the plastics contained in cigarette butts, which are still a major source of litter. Th...e two biggest users of plastics were retail and commercial packaging and in the food industry. https://www.smh.com.au//polystyrene-packaging-to-be-banned See more

22.01.2022 On 1 July the Medium Density Housing code came into force across NSW. It specifies that complying development allows developers building townhouses, dual occupancy homes and more that follow basic guidelines, can bypass the usual development application process. Local Government NSW President, Linda Scott, said: "Communities expect councils to be the front line for local developments and the medium-density housing code will remove local government decision making." Council have also argued that their areas were ill-suited to more intensive development. https://www.smh.com.au//new-rules-leave-sydney-homeowners-

22.01.2022 Submissions are being invited for the State Strategic Plan for CROWN LAND, with the deadline in 2 days, midnight, Thursday 20 August. The Bushland Society is concerned that the draft Plan prioritises economic rather than environmental outcomes, that Crown Lands are seen in terms of development rather than preservation and conservation. The draft Plan speaks of Green Space but has no specific proposal for the preservation of urban Bushland, especially as it is under pressure from development. Please consider making a submission using the SUBMISSION FORM, rather than the submission tool, so you can express your opinion, and email to [email protected] https://www.industry.nsw.gov.au//draft-state-strategic-pla

21.01.2022 Do they never learn? Rachel Carsons book, Silent Spring, was published in 1962 yet the cotton industry denies that their chemicals are the most likely cause of trees losing their leaves in parts of central western NSW. The idea that pesticides can be applied safely to paddocks and not move off target is perhaps one of the greatest cons perpetrated by the chemical industry and regulators on the Australian public and environment, according to National Toxics Network coordinator, Jo Immig. https://www.smh.com.au//the-chemical-report-cotton-austral

21.01.2022 Issues have re-emerged as a result of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Review, a review of interest to Bushland Society members because of the precious natural and heritage sites it Trust controls. These include Cockatoo Island, Middle Head, the sanctuary at North Head, Georges Heights, the former submarine base at Neutral Bay, and sites at Woolwich and Vaucluse. Proposed amendments include placing the Trust itself on a permanent footing, which has been welcomed, but ch...anges to the Trust’s leasing policies could alienate precious sites from the public by private development. A proposal that some of the sites be leased for 35 years or more in order to attract private investment and when notified to Parliament lack transparency, are major causes for concern. https://www.smh.com.au//battle-set-to-erupt-over-sydney-ha Below: Ron Gornall, Bushland Society vice president, conducting a spring wildflower walk in the Sanctuary at North head. 20.01.2022 The State Government has approved a masterplan that will result in 6,680 new homes in St Leonards and Crows Nest Area, according to the latest report from 'In the Cove'. This will affect the Lane Cove and Greenwich areas because many of these apartments are located in St Leonards South (aka East Greenwich) and will impact the Pacific Highway and River Road West. The Greenwich Community Association has been fighting to reduce the height and number of dwellings approved for the area. The Lane Cove Council rezoned the area to permit large scale developments. 19.01.2022 Forest in danger have been fighting to preserve 28 hectares of heavily forested land adjoining the Cumberland State Forest in West Pennant Hills. Mirvac has a development proposal in progress to build 400 apartments and 200 medium density houses on the site that once belonged to IBM. JUNE UPDATE: The NSW Department of Planning has approved the rezoning of 55 Coonara Ave from Business Park to residential. This is despite thousands of objections from the community and rejection of the rezoning by The Hills and Hornsby Councils. 18.01.2022 https://www.smh.com.au//less-is-moore-sydney-council-revea The arguments surrounding Moore Park Golf Course could be reflected in the proposed re development of the Lane Cove Golf Course. Residential development and coronavirus restrictions have increased the need for public space. On the one hand, participation in golf is dropping and a golf course locks parkland away from public use. You can’t go for a stroll on the fairway in case you are hit by flying balls. On the ...other hand, the precious open space of a golf course is loved and there was strong local support in Moore Park to retain the course. It is a green and breathing space in an increasingly densely developed landscape. Lord Mayor Clover Moore’s solution is to divide the golf course, reducing 18 holes to 9 and converting the remainder to parkland; but Lane Cove isn’t big enough to divide or is it? And the surrounding bushland must be protected at all costs the solution is not to rip into the precious trees and plants of the Bushland Park. See more

18.01.2022 Rare urban ecosystems on the brink. If it is one thing that the Bushland Society has fought for since its inception in 1971, it is the preservation of plant and animal diversity in Lane Cove. Now the Australian Conservation Foundation reports that almost half of Australia's national-listed threatened animals and a quarter of the plant species in the largest towns and cities are at risk. Just five species are listed on the national Register of Critical Habitat, when as many as 2000 should be. Among animals most impacted by urban habitat destruction were the red goshawk, the grey-headed flying fox and the koala, and plants include the rare spiked rice flower found at the Camden Golf Course in Sydney's south-west. SMH 5 August.

16.01.2022 We need a green recovery from the Covid shut down. Studies indicate that current emissions reductions that are producing a short term cooling effect will have a negligible impact on global warming unless governments embrace green stimulus packages after the crisis. The modelling suggests after 2030, green stimulus packages would have a significant impact. The European Union, the UK, New Zealand and Scandinavian countries have committed to green recovery packages - so where is our Government on this? https://www.smh.com.au//covid-19-shutdown-will-not-save-pl

15.01.2022 The NSW Government is bending over backwards for property developers while the community carries the cost of infrastructure. Mandatory contributions to local councils will be postponed until the issuing of an occupation certificate, therefore the council carries the cost. Lane Cove Council said this will delay the collection of funds to purchase the land for the Central Park in the incredibly dense development proposed for South St Leonards. See SMH P26, 4 August.

15.01.2022 There are no words to describe the destruction that is unfolding for future generations. Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Sussan Ley MP what are you going to do about this?

14.01.2022 The Minister for Energy and the Environment, Matt Kean, said "The community has moved on, the market has moved on, capital has moved onThe only people standing in the way are those defending vested interests, the beneficiaries of the fossil fuel industry. BHP, the National Farmers Federation, Suncorp and AGL, are all moving away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and only the Federal Government lags behind, according to the opinion piece by Peter Hartcher in the SMH, 22 August. The delay will be filled by gas fuelled energy which is worse than coal with its methane emissions. https://www.smh.com.au//draining-the-nation-s-energy-how-c

14.01.2022 The Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society was originally founded to preserve the Bushland Park at the eastern end of the Lane Cove Golf Course when an extension of the Lane Cove Golf Course was proposed in 1971. Council now proposes to re develop the area as a Sports and Recreation Precinct and the Society has some concerns. Please consider writing a submission to Council rather than answering their Survey. Information about the proposal can be found at: http://www.lan...ecove.nsw.gov.au//SportandRecreationPrecinct Submissions should be made to [email protected] by this Sunday 16 August. Issues to be considered: Putt-putt course and driving range; Preservation of adjacent bushland; Sharing the fairways; Access from a roundabout on River Road; Indoor netball / basketball facilities; Clubhouse for the community as well as sporting groups; A business plan to be made public; Further community consultation is required. 14.01.2022 The Government’s proposed Design and Place State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) will unduly empower developers in relation to climate change, tree canopy, green energy and biodiversity in our urban environment. Instead of standards to be met, developers will have flexibility that will encourage more court cases challenging council decisions. You are encouraged to make a submission for the Intended Effects Statement on exhibition until 28 April. https://www.planning.nsw.gov.au/.../Design-and-Place-SEPP Following the Intended Effects Statement, a draft of the SEPP will be available for consultation. The Total Environment Centre has provided information concerning the issues: https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/.../DESIGN_AND...

14.01.2022 From the Better Planning Network: KOALA SEPP CHANGES WILL KILL KOALAS In one fell swoop the Government has rendered the Koala SEPP useless: "Landholders will also be able to access ecologists or use their own to appeal against a council's koala plan of management. On-the-ground surveys will also return in place of mapping." This change is a gift to property developers because councils won't be keen go to the expense of doing ground surveys especially if mistakes expose them to litigation. 13.01.2022 The koala is the symbol of the staggering number of wildlife that Australia has already lost due to inadequate regulation of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. The Act requires the Federal Government to assess the impacts of proposed land clearing on threatened species, but very few applications are scrutinised. Now the Senate is debating changes to the Act which include handing the management to the States, yet it is not clear how the States would handle this responsibility. Weak enforcement of environment laws over the past decade has permitted habitat destruction that displaced or killed tens of millions of native animals, including thousands of hectares of threatened species habitat. https://www.smh.com.au//enforcement-of-environment-laws-co

13.01.2022 Mining old growth forests is disastrous on many levels as we know. Nicole Ryecroft, an Australian forests campaigner who founded the not-for-profit organisation Canopy, has just won a $US3 million Climate Breakthrough Award to assist in her work to help major consumers of paper to source sustainable alternatives and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She has said, As a species we are smarter than cutting down 400-year-old trees to make T-shirts, Jackie Collins novels or even just packaging. (Below is an image of old growth forests in Gippsland, Victoria that local organisations have campaigned to preserve.) https://www.smh.com.au//australian-wins-the-world-s-riches.

13.01.2022 We need you to call Bunnings to congratulate their move to protect Victorias native forests and wildlife. Bunnings are discontinuing any future sourcing of tim...ber from VicForests because the Court found they logged illegally. Counter the loggers campaign by calling Bunnings now 03 8831 9777 BUNNINGS BLOCKADE WILL BACKFIRE The CFMMEUs blockade of Bunnings will backfire by getting the public offside, Environmentalist Bob Brown said today. By its ban on timber from wildlife-rich native forests in Victoria, Bunnings has shown how Australia can keep its forests but have plentiful wood from plantations to meet its timber needs. Bunnings is one popular winner here. Michael OConnors actions bring to the fore all the epithets the CFMEU has used against environmentalists defending forests job-killers, radical etc. For every one of their callers to Bunnings favouring forest destruction we will get two, if not ten, to congratulate Bunnings, Bob Brown said today. Theres an added problem for the CFMEU if they try this at Bunnings in Tasmania later this year. If the Gutwein new anti-protest laws pass the state parliament, OConnor and his crew will be arrested and if they persist, face four years in jail, Bob Brown said.

13.01.2022 David Attenborough has made possibly his last documentary at the age of 93 which is called "Life on Our Planet". It is what he has called his witness statement to the damage humanity has done - as he said, The way we humans live on Earth is sending it into a decline. With information and images, he shows the devastating damage done to forests, seas, corals and animal life over his near century of living and working with nature. It is not all damnation for he offers solutions if we undertake them now. Everyone should see his program https://youtu.be/64R2MYUt394

12.01.2022 Found along Tambourine Bay, Warraroon Reserve in Riverview is a favourite bushwalk amongst locals. This walk abounds in Aboriginal heritage and as you walk, you...ll brush past mangroves and wetlands as you follow the creek upstream. A great place to stop for a picnic is at the waterfall and Magic Bridge, a natural stone bridge named by local school children. 11.01.2022 Its about time a MP stood up to his party on behalf of his electorate about fast-tracked over development, but will he hold the line or is this a token gesture for re election? The Police Minister, David Elliott, is demanding that all new medium and high-density development in his electorate of Baulkham Hills be postponed until key infrastructure, including schools and roads, is built. But Rob Stokes response was Mr Elliott was "doing his job and advocating for the community he represents". Noted but no change? https://www.smh.com.au//protecting-the-hills-lifestyle-min

11.01.2022 This is amazing news!!! Thanks to all of you who fought to protect old growth forest.

11.01.2022 What a disgrace this is! The Nationals leave the Gladys Berejiklian Government over the latter's attempts to save the koala from extinction in the wild. Stand strong and don't give into them Matt Kean MP Gladys Berejiklian Rob Stokes

10.01.2022 Good on ya Matt Kean MP!

10.01.2022 Some good news at last? An independent review into the Sydney Harbour Foundation Trust has recommended against long-term plans to transfer the control of historic sites into private hands. We have been watching this issue with concern, given Lane Cove is also part of the harbour foreshore, although not under the Trust. The trust was set up in 2001 in order to address the restoration of sites such as the Macquarie Light Station in Vaucluse, Neutral Bay's Sub Base Platypus and Cockatoo Island. Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley, said "Leasing is already a part of the Trust but the concept of 50-year leases is not recommended." This would have alienated heritage sites from the public - so we await with interest the decision about how these sites will be preserved. https://www.smh.com.au//harbour-trust-review-recommends-ag

09.01.2022 And about time tooThe Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation has been advocating for parks, open spaces and bushland for nearly 50 years and Lane Cove is the greener for it. The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment will release its draft Greener Places policy today, outlining guidelines for parks, sporting fields, open corridors and rooftop gardens. Parks and other open spaces should be within 200m of high-density homes and 400m from schools and workplaces, under n...ew NSW government guidelines prioritising greenery in the wake of COVID-19. "It's not just about sustaining our environment, it's about regenerating our environment," NSW Government Architect Abbie Galvin said. Maintaining existing green spaces as the status quo was no longer good enough in urban planning policy. Next question: who pays for this? https://www.smh.com.au//nsw-government-releases-shared-bac See more

09.01.2022 Our precious green space in Lane Cove, preserved in the face of increased pressure for development, is now recognised as valuable. The latest figures from a survey by the NSW Planning Department show 46 per cent of people spent more time in public spaces than before coronavirus restrictions. Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said that he favours creating safer, wider and "more interesting pedestrianised landscapes", which he hopes will lead to fewer people driving to make local trips, instead choosing to walk, cycle or run.

09.01.2022 The Environment Protection Authority revealed that the Forestry Corp intends to resume logging in the South Coast forests and not abide by new conditions after the fires. The EPA is concerned that Forestry Corp is being pushed by Deputy Premier John Barilaro to deliver on commercial contracts at the expense of remnant and recovering forests and wildlife, including endangered species such as bandicoots and potoroos. The Forestry Corp has declined EPA’s request for additional... site specific conditions to be applied to bolster koala protections in these forests. NSW independent MP Justin Field said, This is the most fire impacted part of the state, more than 80 per cent was burnt and many much loved and threatened species are at risk of extinction, yet the Deputy Premier seems determined to log every last tree. https://www.smh.com.au//state-government-agencies-at-war-o See more

08.01.2022 Lane Cove Council is currently considering community feedback on its draft plans for 2020-2021 operations & associated budget. Click on the link below for our submission. We are pleased to see that Council is working to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. However, one of the key issues we raise is the absence of clear emission reduction targets for Council operations. It's also important to recognise that Council operations only comprise 2% of total Lane Cove LGA emissions. Council is ideally placed to actively engage the local community in reducing its carbon footprint and there is plenty of scope to do that. Working alongside each other, Council and community can make a significant difference. Let's start on the journey Lane Cove Council.

07.01.2022 We have known for some time that the legislation and management of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act has failed to do what it was intended to do, so will the proposal to hand these assessments to State Governments improve the situation? Since colonisation 100 species of our unique fauna and flora have been wiped out. https://www.smh.com.au//ring-fence-critical-habitat-expert

06.01.2022 Glad to see Rob Stokes recognises that doubling the construction of high-density units every year would become a "massive potential cost to everyone else in NSW due to increased traffic congestion from higher urban density, heritage impacts and the need to retrofit utilities, hospitals and schools to cope. Heres hoping that authorities approving South St Leonards takes this into consideration. As Jerome Laxale, Ryde's Labor mayor said, "Whacking 20 storeys on top [of a building] is a developer's utopia but not a citizen's utopia. SMH 10 Aug Page 3

06.01.2022 The pressure from developers for increased housing height and densification is receiving pushback from Councils such as Ku-ring-gai and Ryde. Councils are rejecting the housing targets set by the Greater Sydney Commission and the Planning Department. The Mayor of Ku-ring-gai said, It is clear that the Greater Sydney Commission’s dwelling targets, which were the basis for the draft housing strategy, were never wanted by anyone except property developers. Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 3 November, Local Government section.

05.01.2022 Who loves Lovetts Reserve? Councils Bushland Team recommends visiting this spot in the late afternoon as the sun goes down. You can take a waterside stroll thr...ough Lovetts Reserve past sandstone cliffs and mangroves and find a bench seat or rock with a view. Sit awhile and watch rowers, kayakers and birds on the Lane Cove River below. Beautiful native flowers can be spotted here in any season. If youre keen to visit Lovett Reserve, the best place to access it is from the playground opposite 100 Penrose Street, Lane Cove West, which has convenient street parking nearby. Enter the bushland adjacent to Blackman Park and when you meet the river, continue south along the track. See more

05.01.2022 Lane Cove Council have released a comprehensive wildlife survey undertaken by ecological consultants between September 2019 and April 2020, covering all of Lane Cove's major bushland reserves. Around 200 different native animal species, including more than 150 different types of birds, have been observed in the bushland and gardens of the Lane Cove. Swamp Wallabies, Sugar Gliders, Echidnas, Green Tree Frogs, turtles and microbats are still sighted occasionally and endangered species such as the Powerful Owl and Eastern Bent-wing Bat also reside in our area. For further information about wildlife and programs can be found on the council website at: http://www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au//Pa/WildlifeInLaneCove.aspx

04.01.2022 Farmers in NSW are increasing the rate they clear land, taking advantage of looser native vegetation controls to more than double the pace of deforestation of the previous decade. The Berejiklian government replaced vegetation laws in August 2017, prompting a surge in land clearing by farmers. Only about one-fifth of the 2018 total land cover change was formally authorised. Independent NSW MP Justin Field said, There is little wonder we face the extinction of the koala in NSW if this level of deforestation is being allowed under the Berejiklian government," https://www.smh.com.au//nsw-farmers-accelerate-land-cleari

04.01.2022 Minister Rob Stokes of the NSW Department of department of planning industry and environment has responded to the Federal review of Sydney Harbour Trust with offers to take over the role to see that these sites are appropriately maintained, that Aboriginal, built and natural heritage is preserved and that public access is improved. 04.01.2022 The Lane Cove Council is holding the first council meeting for the year tonight, Monday night 15 Feb, with important items in the agenda for the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society. The following is a summary of the submission our President, Shauna Forrest, has made to Council: The LCB&CS is concerned that any alternative traffic arrangements for the Pathways development in Northwood should not result in the destruction of a valuable bushland corridor and native habita...t containing many large trees in order to increase road access for a private development. As Council has committed to the ‘Climate Emergency’, it is unthinkable that this bushland, which is a precious remnant commodity contributing to temperature reduction and clean air, should be affected by development. Concerning proposals relating to the re development of the Lane Cove Golf Course: LCB&CS would like to see the Council develop a Policy to control Light -Spill from development before outdoor sporting facilities are considered as proposed by deliberative engagement, as well as controlling Light-Spill from any developments, in order to protect nocturnal native animals by degrading bushland as liveable habitat. The Society would like to congratulate the Council on the following environmental initiatives, and supports their adoption: The Proposal for Council to adopt targets to reduce emissions by 20% and have no net increase in water usage by 2024; The Expression of Interest with Ausgrid to participate in any future trials of a Community Solar Battery. The: Proposal for Council to give feedback to a review of the BASIX targets. [BELOW: Ron Gornall and Shauna Forrest on the LCB&CS stall in Sustainability Lane] See more

03.01.2022 So incredibly heart-breaking. Our government doesn't seem to get it, does it?

03.01.2022 https://www.smh.com.au//sacrificial-lamb-anger-over-high-r Bitter arguments against plans for the South St Leonards development include negligible open space, poor design and unacceptable impact on transport and social infrastructure. The development includes 2000 homes in towers up to 19 storeys high from the Pacific Highway south to River Road. Two reports criticised the plans as over development, one from the Independent Planning Commission and another from a design work...shop commissioned by the Planning Department, yet the Government rejected this advice. Lane Cove mayor Pam Palmer said the council needed to accommodate 3500 new dwellings by 2026 and "this was the most sensible place to look at for more development". Lane Cove councillors will consider detailed development controls for the site at a meeting on Monday, before the new planning laws come into effect on November 1. See more

03.01.2022 So incredibly sad. And unlike past generations, we know what we are doing. There is no excuse Scott Morrison (ScoMo)

02.01.2022 Perhaps, as a result of the new Building Commissioner, David Chandlers appointment, we can have more confidence in the quality of the high rise developments that are being pushed onto us. Ross Taylor, writing in an SMH Opinion Piece today, pointed to two areas that are being addressed: firstly, inspection powers and secondly full design documentation before concrete is poured. In the past a developer could, halfway through the process, transfer the documentation to someone... else, usually less qualified, to finish the design more cheaply. The risk and cost of defects was then forced onto future owners. Now the commissioner can withhold the all-important occupation certificate in the event of an unsatisfactory audit. The Government must wrest control from the developers for the sake of the community for a change. https://www.smh.com.au//millions-of-dollars-in-repairs-nip See more
