Archbishop Christopher Prowse (Bishops Commission for Evangelisation, Laity and Ministry Chairperson) and Bishop Michael Morrisey (Bishops Delegate for Women) will be present for the meeting to hear the voice of Catholic Women from around Australia. 04.01.2022 At the height of COVD-19 restrictions during Holy Week this year, the diocese was unable to hold its annual Chrism Mass. The Chrism Mass takes its name fr...om one of the holy oils which is blessed during the celebration of the Eucharist on the night. At the Chrism Massunique to the cathedral of each diocesewe gather to pray with the bishop and his collaborators, the priests of the diocese, in thanksgiving and praise to God and to pray for them as they renew their commitment to the service of God and his priestly people. After consultation with his clergy, Bishop Brian Mascord and the clergy of the diocese will be celebrating the Chrism Mass tomorrow evening (Tuesday 29 September 2020) 6pm at St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Wollongong. Usually there is a large attendance of parishioners from across the diocese, but because of the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, attendance has been restricted to invites only. Those called to serve as priests and bishops are also anointed with the Chrism at their ordinations. Chrism is further used for the anointings pertaining to the dedication of churches and altars. At the Chrism Mass, then, the priestly people gather with the bishop to celebrate the blessing of the Oil of Catechumens and the Chrism with which men and women are brought into God’s priestly people and men are ordained to the priesthood. God’s priestly people are called to a ministry of healing. In the sacrament of healing known as the Anointing of the Sick, oil is again used to anoint the ill and infirm, and so the healing Church gathers at the Chrism Mass as the bishop blesses this Oil of the Sick. Taking holy oils blessed by our chief pastor for sacramental use to each of the parishes in the local church of Wollongong is a sign of our unitybeing in communion with our bishop and with each other. During the Eucharistic Prayer, the bishop invites all to remember the living and the dead. We pray for all the living people in our diocese: young, middle-aged and seniors; for our parishes and schools, and works of service and outreach; for our clergy, our seminarians, religious, teachers, catechists; and for those who are challenged by illness, poverty, or disability. We also pray for the dead: our own deceased relatives, friends and benefactors, all the faithful departed.

03.01.2022 Bishop Brian Mascord has released new directives, effective Saturday 21 March, for parishes as a result of the changing Government protocols dealing with COVID-...19. https://www.dow.org.au/covid-19 From the statement: "After considering the recent advice from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and direction from the Federal and NSW Governments, the following measures will be in place, effective Saturday 21 March 2020: - No public Masses will be celebrated in the Diocese of Wollongong. - All faithful in the diocese will be dispensed from the obligation to physically attend Mass on Sundays. However, parishioners can honour their Sunday obligation by participating in a time of prayer within the home, reading the Scriptures, or watching Mass on television/online (canon 87 1 , canon 1248 2). - Mass will continue to be said privately by priests throughout the diocese on behalf of the faithful on a daily basis. - Churches will, as far as possible, remain open for private prayer." **** We have created a page on our website dedicated to the latest guidance from the diocese outlining its role in preventing the spread of the virus in our communities. 02.01.2022 Friends, my ongoing prayers are very much with the family, friends and parishioners of Emeritus Bishop Geoffrey Robinson who died on 29 December after a long ba...ttle with cancer. Bishop Robinson was well known for the great pastoral care he showed the parishioners of St Joseph's Enfield where he was Bishop in Residence over many years. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at this church on Wednesday 6 January at 11am. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance at the Mass will be limited.
