Sonia Di Mezza is a human rights lawyer who has worked as chief executive of the Domestic Violence Crisis Service, deputy chief executive of the ACT Disability, Aged and Carers Advocacy Service, and as a resettlement consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She has set up and managed human rights programs in Pakistan and Sudan, worked on child labour rights in India, and has w...orked as a refugee lawyer. Sonia will replace Rosita Vincent, who will be leaving the organisation on 18 December. Jennifer Lay, Chair of Multicultural Services Board, acknowledged the enormous contribution made by Rose, both in her role as Manager of Community Programs, and her Interim Executive Officer role in steering the organisation through the challenges of 2020. The Board is confident that Sonia's extensive not-for-profit, intercultural and leadership experience will contribute to even stronger connections with multicultural communities throughout our region, and we look forward to showing her a warm Bendigo welcome next month

When we live in Australia and we get the citizenship of Australia, we feel very happy. We are safe. No one will tell us to go back to your country. When they get their citizenship like me, they feel happy." Laila is a recognised youth leader, currently advising Multicultural Services and the Multicultural Youth Network on issues tha...t affect young, multicultural Victorians. Laila is also the face of our 2020 Zinda Festival and has been working with the Hazara community to produce in-language videos and livestreams relating to COVID-19 updates. This week, Laila received her Australian citizenship and spoke to Multicultural Services about her dreams, the importance of doing what you love and the significance of citizenship to community members from refugee backgrounds.
