25.01.2022 This time last year, I was planning to continue to grow my business by expanding what I was doing in person I was about to fly to Sydney to take a weekend course in helping people avoid back pain. The longer term goal was to build this into a new business using my leadership skills to make a difference. The world looks very different than it did a year ago! With lockdowns and time to reflect, many people have reevaluated their priorities, including me. I started by cutting back from 6 days a week and days working from 6am to 8pm, and this year I’ve launched a new business focusing on the knowledge and skills I’ve built over the past 15 years of leading teams and running my own business. Comment below if you’ve taken the time to adjust your priorities in the past year and let me know what changes you’ve made!

21.01.2022 Here’s an older pic of me observing 4 square m of space around me If I reproduce the shot today I’ll have to clean the equipment afterwards! The good news here in SA is that indoor training is on again today One thing to keep in mind: your body remembers what it was able to do before the restrictions came in place. However, if you haven’t been as active for a couple of months, it might take a week or two to lift the intensity of your workout back to where it was in March.... Working hard today and pushing your limits to be better for the next time you train is good. Smashing yourself today based on what you could do in March and injuring yourself is not so good. We’ll build things up again with a little bit of patience and before you know it we’ll be back at the standards we were at in March See more

20.01.2022 This is what they wanted when they asked for COVID marshals to be easily identifiable, isn’t it?

20.01.2022 It’s a few weeks now since pretty much everyone’s routines were turned upside down To be honest, I’ve found it hard to adjust. Almost all of the crutches I had come to rely on were taken away! Fortunately for me, I have a coffee machine and I have developed new routines that allow me to be thoughtful in my backyard rather than at the local coffee shop! If you haven’t got new routines up and running yet, things will be like this for a bit longer start with one new routine tomorrow and go from there! What new routines have you adopted in the past few weeks?

20.01.2022 Well, the November rowing challenge has been run and won! ... what’s that? A tie?! On the ladies’ side of the challenge, we had 4 people improve their personal best during the month, and Mel was the quickest overall with 250m in 54.1 seconds On the gents’ side, we had 3 improve on their personal best during the month, and Justin looked like being the quickest overall with 44.4 seconds... until Matt stepped up to the rower on the last Saturday of the month and equalled the 44.4 seconds Well done to everyone who rowed in the challenge, and now for the December challenge!

19.01.2022 I’ve had a few people this week mentioning that our Premier had flagged changes that may affect fitness studios... As of time of typing this, nothing has changed If I was to hazard a guess, the next change would be to increase the amount of space per person back from 2 square metres to 4 square metres. Since I’m almost exclusively doing one on one or two on one sessions at the moment, that would mean no effective change to what we’re doing at the studio. All bets are of...f if we start to see cases rise in South Australia though, hopefully that doesn’t happen! Thoughts with my Victorian fitness friends at the moment, hope the situation improves there soon! Do you agree changes to required space is the most likely next step in SA? Post your thoughts below! 18.01.2022 (First posted in my new account @lachlancameronsmith - give me a follow over there!) Do you read a book a week? Have you heard of people who aim to read a book a week? It’s awesome to consume so much information and be able to learn from the best! One question - what value is that knowledge if you don’t act on it or make use of it?... I’ve slowed down my reading this year in order to integrate more lessons into what I do. Pictured is one of those books which I’ve taken time over this year, Change Maker by John Berardi PhD! Is it better to read less books but to take the time to integrate the lessons from those books into your life? Let me know what you think in the comments below! See more

16.01.2022 It’s less than 2 weeks until indoor training can resume in South Australia! (Sorry to my friends in New South Wales reading this) If you’ve been less active over the last couple of months, you’re not Robinson Crusoe, so don’t feel bad about it! Pace yourself! Build up over a couple of weeks back into a routine of being active, rather than looking to resume at the same intensity you were working out at before the restrictions came in. No one want to get injured within a week ...of training resuming! Consistency beats intensity. Being able to stay active several times a week without getting injured will always beat the world’s most intense workout once a week! Also, there are more factors in improving your health than just adding in workouts (hello nutrition, recovery and stress), so you can’t just smash yourself to better health! A good coach can help you judge just how hard to push to get improvement without risking injury. Send me a direct message if you’d like some help getting active

16.01.2022 One of the things I miss the most about the current situation is not being able to go out for a relaxed brunch with my partner... I’m choosing to look at the current situation like this: I’m hugely grateful for the times we enjoyed brunch at nice places, and I’m looking forward to a point in the near-ish future when we will get to do it again! What are you looking forward to being able to do in the not too distant future?

15.01.2022 Day 2 of a 6 day lockdown which has now been reduced to a 3 day lockdown One of my lessons from the lockdowns this year is that all I can control is my own thoughts and actions. So the disruption of the last week, having to close down and then open up earlier than expected, not being able to spend time with my partner or two adult sons, things haven’t really gone to plan at all!... All I control in this is how I think and react, and I’m choosing to see the positive that we’ll be able to open up as of midnight Saturday, and look forward to seeing some people in person sooner than expected

14.01.2022 Humans are designed to be able to deal with short lived stresses which go away after a short time. The fight or flight system kicks in for a short period of time, and once the stress is over, we return to rest and digest mode. We can then reset and in some cases the body will make changes to be better and more resilient. As a fitness coach, allow me to offer exercise as an example of a stressor that allows the body to make cardiovascular, strength, flexibility and mental heal...th improvements, in short lived doses! What if, as a result of modern life, most people are coping with ongoing stress, with the fight or flight system jammed on all the time? And what if on top of this, a global pandemic were to come along and for many people brings the stress levels even higher? I think at the current time we need to change our expectations of what benefits we will get from exercise. It’s important to stay active as one part of keeping the body healthy and giving the immune system the best possible chance to deal with whatever it comes across. I think we need to prioritise the mental health benefits of exercise at this point over setting personal bests and trying for the most intense workout in the world. After all, the Olympics have been put off until next year! I’m proud that my clients keep turning up and putting in the best effort they have got on the day, even if they’re finding that the resources they have to spend are a bit more variable than they were prior to interruptions caused by *that* virus. In 2020 given all the rapid changes, uncertainty and stress that people are experiencing, that’s awesome! See more

12.01.2022 And we have some timeframes for restrictions being lifted in SA. Gyms on June 8th if all goes to plan!

11.01.2022 The most common thing I do with a foam roller is roll through the upper back! Why? Because almost everyone spends so much time leaning forwards looking at screens, reading etc that their upper back muscles need some love! Even more so now that many people are spending time working from a table at home that wasn’t intended to be a work desk! Pop the shoulder blades on the roller, pick the hips up off the floor, engage the core and brace the hips, raise the arms overhead and go for 10-12 rolls back and forth. Stay below the neck and go up to 5 cm each pass. If you don’t have a foam roller at home, it’s one of the pieces of equipment that I recommend for every home! What’s your favourite foam rolling technique?

11.01.2022 What are you finding most challenging about the current restrictions? What are you finding most challenging about the current restrictions?

10.01.2022 Starting today, we’ve got a QR code to be scanned every time you come in for a training session

08.01.2022 It’s been a pleasure for me to see the progress that Helene has made this year! When I first spoke to Helene at the start of the year, she was in a moon boot recovering from a broken foot, and looking for some assistance to help her build up to be able to return to the running that she loves. We developed a plan for building up her cardiovascular fitness while managing the load on her foot. Fast forward to today: Helene has now started running again, and continues to push herself at training every week! Given two options in a session, she will always choose the toughest one, which is where the improvement comes from! Thanks for your kind words Helene and looking forward to helping you continue to make progress!

08.01.2022 We are so lucky to be in South Australia right now! This is the start of the fifth week since indoor fitness studios have been able to reopen in SA. I’ve enjoyed being back in the studio and seeing people face to face for the first time in nearly 3 months. The winter mornings and the new equipment cleaning requirements, I’ve enjoyed not quite as much! During the 3 month enforced closedown, there was uncertainty about the risk of spreading *that* virus, when we’d be able to re...open, and how many people would return to coaching in person. So I’m particularly grateful that having gone through lockdown, we have had almost everyone get back into training and we have started helping some new people one-on-one. Thanks to all my coaching clients and fingers crossed that we’ll be able to continue without further interruptions for the rest of this strange year!

07.01.2022 South Australia have brought forward the date for step 2 of easing restrictions to June 5 Not long to wait before training in person at gyms is back! * subject to social distancing, cleaning and keeping hands sanitized...

06.01.2022 Well, things have changed a lot today! When I woke up this morning I wasn’t predicting that we would have gyms and studios closed from midnight for the next 14 days... It’s not exactly what I had planned for the rest of November, but I’ll make the next couple of weeks work for me, and dust off Zoom for the odd at home session too! Stay well and safe everyone and hopefully this is just a short blip!

06.01.2022 The date has been brought forward again! Amongst other restrictions being lifted earlier, indoor fitness training will be back from June 1

06.01.2022 So, September challenge time! To accommodate people who hate cardio it’s a strength based challenge: how many kg can you lift (with good form of course) in one session? The original intention was for each person to only compete against themself and try to improve over the month... But I received some quite robust feedback that there has to be some element of competition against other people... Fine! Gents, can you lift 10,000kg in a session? Ladies, can you lift 4000kg in a s...ession? What’s your favourite lift for this month? See more

05.01.2022 Good news that the lockdown is set to be lifted as of midnight Saturday! Also, family exercise restrictions have been lifted as of this morning's press conference I have a few people to get in touch with to get things scheduled in for next week now

05.01.2022 As of Friday 21st we will have a new requirement to have a COVID Marshal in the studio making sure we're complying with our requirements. I'll need to get accredited before then, in practice there will be no change to how the sessions will run as there's sufficient physical distancing in all my sessions! I'm on the lookout for a nice sheriff's badge though, drop me a line if you know where I can pick one up https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/recovery/covid-marshals

05.01.2022 While it might be a while before we can go back to exercising in a gym or studio, if all goes to plan (and so far so good) we'll be able to leave the house to exercise after the 6 day lockdown

05.01.2022 Good news: gyms (with less than 20 people) will be included as part of step 2 of the lifting of restrictions. With the now usual hygiene and social distancing requirements. It's up to SA as to when that will happen for the Royston Park studio, and I'll post once more information is provided...

04.01.2022 Me: Sure, I’ll pick up 2 x 30L bags of cat litter that have no handles and are really hard to grip from the pet store. It will be a short pleasant walk and will give me some light activity for the day! Also me: Holy crap that was the most brutal workout I’ve done for a while! Don’t underestimate the value of carrying things like bags of shopping and maintaining good posture! If you’re looking for a way to be active while staying at home, put some tins, jars, toilet rolls etc into shopping bags and carry them around while keeping the shoulders back and standing tall. Harder than it looks and a sneaky way to stay active

04.01.2022 Today’s story starts in January 2020. It was a simpler time then I started the year with some long days, saying hello to my first client at 6am and saying goodbye to my last client for the day at 8pm. And that was before the extra cleaning required during a global virus outbreak! I was tired pretty much all the time and often napped during the day to try to keep up energy. I had become the health coach who was spending his time helping other people look after their healt...h, but not looking after himself! Fast forward to today, and I’ve wound back my hours with earlier start and finish times than I was working in January. I’m getting more time to recharge and get better quality sleep. And I’m feeling the benefits with more energy and a clearer head. Which is helpful at a time when I need my immune system to be at its best! Is it a coincidence that while I’ve focused on doing the things that allow me to show up with more energy and clearer head, even with shorter days, that I’m busier than ever coaching people to the point of being fully booked out? Today’s question for you: what’s one change that you could make today that would help you look after yourself better? More sleep? Less social media? Less Netflix? Post your answer below! See more

03.01.2022 This is where the magic happens! With the highest priority being everyone’s health and wellbeing and not risking exposure to COVID-19, and with restrictions in place for in person training, I’m now doing virtual training! In order for the immune system to be at its best, and to help manage stress levels, we need to be active. Most people now aren’t opening time commuting to work as they were a month ago. So why not use some of that time to go for a walk (while maintaining required distance from other people) or get a workout in?

03.01.2022 Final standings for the August challenge (1km on the assault bike). Congratulations to Andrew, Emily and all other competitors! We’ll have to have a ceremony to present the expensive and high quality medals September challenge to be posted tomorrow My turn for this one, what’s your guess on what it will be?

02.01.2022 The first few times that I did the Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty walk, I timed myself and tried to beat my previous best each time. Now rather than racing myself, I take the time to enjoy my surroundings, which is how I got to see this little guy up in a tree next to the track. (Meanwhile, 6 separate groups of people went past listening to crap music through their phone speakers I’m betting none of them saw the koala.) Walking has reduces stress and has mental health benefits as well as being a sneaky way to enjoy fitting activity into your day! What’s your favourite place to walk in Adelaide?
