Retin-A vs. retinal vs. retinol: Simple Truth With all the incredible benefits they offer, you may be wondering which type of retinoid is right for you. When you look at the differences in Retin-A, retinal, and retinol, it really all comes down to potency. Retin-A is a prescription-strength retinoic acid that’s indicated for acne and wrinkles. And it’s prescription-only for good reason. Most need some guidance in choosing the right formula, the right molecule, and the right strength. Retin-A tends to cause irritation...not just a little redness, but can cause major redness, dryness, soreness. Retinal is less potent than prescription strength but more potent than retinol. Retinol must go through two phases (Retinal does not) before being converted to retinoic acid in the body, which ultimately makes it less potent. You can have soft, supple lips all year round by following a few suggestions... 1Always use non-irritating lip balms, lipsticks, and other products that you apply to your lips... Don’t mistake burning, stinging, or tingling, as a sign that the active ingredients in a product are working. You’re actually irritating your lips. Don’t use any product that irritates your lips. Some ingredients to avoid when lips are dry, chapped Camphor Eucalyptus Flavorings such as Cinnamon, citrus, mint, and peppermint flavors which can be irritating to dry, chapped lips Fragrance Lanolin Menthol Octinoxate or oxybenzone Phenol (or phenyl) Propyl gallate Salicylic acid Some ingredients that may help dry, chapped lips Castor seed oil Ceramides Dimethicone Hemp seed oil Mineral oil Petrolatum Shea butter Sun-protective ingredients, such as titanium oxide or zinc oxide White petroleum jelly 2Apply a non-irritating lip balm/lip moisturizer several times a day and before bed. 3Use a non-irritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before heading outside. Winter doesn’t mean that you don’t need to protect your lips from the sun. The sun can burn dry, chapped lips more easily. And of course use my favorite ingredients for sunscreen..zinc or titanium 4Drink plenty of water. 5Stop licking, biting, and picking at your lips And yes certain otc lip balms/moisturizers are better than others..reach out if you need help.
