20.01.2022 Throwback to a floral installation I did for the Sydney Royal Easter Show, titled "The Last Lap". We were asked to 'capture the spirit of the races'. - The Last Lap - Often when thinking about the races, we think of champagne, fun, and fascinators, but the true heart of the races is the horses. I wanted to use my art piece as a platform to she'd light on the often overlooked darker spirit of racing the pain and suffering that these animals endure. In the horse racing indus...try, the value of a horse is often seen only in terms of financial return. Horses are forced to race with injuries, and are sometimes pushed too far. The exertion of races leads to many horses suffering internal bleeding. When a horse no longer turns over enough profit, they can be sent to slaughter houses. This cruelty is not necessary, and it should not be acceptable. There is nothing wrong with the joy of the races, but it doesn't have to be at the expense of the horses. The traditions, the cultural legacy and the social significance of the races lives in the competitiveness, the frivolity, and the sense of community, not in the cruelty. We need new legislation, creating better standards and the infrastructure to support them, and then the races could maintain their frivolity and fun but could avoid the mistreatment and suffering that hides beneath the surface today. These issues are global, but we should do our part in Australia to make our races safe and inclusive for all, especially the animals that are the true spirit of the races the horses. My piece represents this dark underside of the races, while still celebrating the excitement, the beauty of the horses and the hope of a brighter future for these animals and for the races in general. While the shape and style of my pieces is emblematic of the fascinator, one of the first recalled symbols in the cultural memory of the races, the other elements like the colour and textures represent this disguised backstory of the races, which is often hidden beneath the frills and excitement. . . . . . #LeaBlooms #sydney #florsitry #floralinstalation #event #eventfloristry #races #horseraces #animalcruelty #animalrights #sydneyroyaleastershow See more
