13.01.2022 P A I N has been described as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. (IASP Terminology 1994) ACUTE PAINis the pain linked to acute tissue damage usually occurring during an event associated to injury, surgery or disease within the tissue. This process follows the typical inflammatory healing pathway, and usually takes anywhere up to 12 weeks. It is important to note that phy...siotherapy treatment of acute pain will often continue after pain has resolved, as treating pain is only one aspect of rehabilitating an acute injury. And returning to previous (or greater) physical function can take longer. At Leaders Physiotherapy we understand the importance of reducing the level of risk for future pain episodes. The pain experienced during this time is seen as a helpful and protective strategy utilized by our bodies to assist healing and recovery. When pain persists beyond this timeframe its often termed Chronic pain. CHRONIC PAINis pain that exists beyond the above protective strategies or healing pathway and is influenced by numerous factors and no longer a symptom of a pathological process. Rather, it can be seen as a pathological process itself. The treatment of such pain usually requires a more extensive approach and potentially includes multiple health practitioners. One example of some factors that influence the pathway of chronic pain can be considered under the bio-psycho-social model; 1Biological: disease severity, nociception (pain receptors), inflammation, brain processing of neural information, sleep / recovery. 2Social: cultural, economical, support, social environment 3Psychological: mood, stress, coping, catastrophizing . Recent studies showed that an INJURY (resulting in time loss of training) was 3-6 times higher in the subsequent 7 days after reporting a niggle! 10.01.2022 Understanding and interpreting scans of the human body is a difficult process. Not only does it help to have anatomical knowledge to breakdown each area of the body you are looking at, it also helps to have a clinical understanding of how the information presented in the report relates to the individual being scanned. . Furthermore the strength of each report is only as good as the person interpreting the image. The quality of report and the quality of image can vary depen...ding on the type of scan and the person reading it. . There are many incidental findings reported on a scan that may not have strong clinical relevance to the patient or their injuries. The most common example of this is with spine scans. Many changes occur over time to our spine including degeneration that may just be age related changes and perfectly normal. It is important to talk to a health professional like a Physiotherapist or GP to learn how your scan and report relate to your current presentation. . Another example is bursitis found within a shoulder scan. This is an often an unhelpful diagnosis as it does not explain the real causation of pain within the shoulder. More often than not, the shoulder mechanics and muscles around the shoulder complex are the real problem. The real problem generally stems from the mechanics of the shoulder and the bursitis is merely a side- or after-effect of those mechanics, rather than the causing factor in pain. 03.01.2022 Mens Health Weekend This morning, we joined WPN Wear in on their WPN Session, and took action on our own words about how movement, exercise, and physical activity can lead to better mental health. It looks like a regular workout, but it was something special. WPN Sessions were designed in a way where men could learn, connect, and support each other. As simple controlling your breath, exercising to breaking point and supporting the bloke next to you, and reflecting on ...what we were grateful for (even the little things) were all a great way for men to open up about issues and emotions without feeling enormously pressured or uncomfortable.
