14.01.2022 A key recommendation of the Aged Care Royal Commission in its special report on COVID-19 is for government to fund providers to ensure adequate staff are available to facilitate loved ones to visit. As the provider of executive management services to aged care facilities in Regional Victoria, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of reducing the mental and physical harms associated with isolation for our elderly residents. While we have more leeway in Regional Victoria, Me...tro Melbourne should also be given some scope to develop innovative ways to facilitate visits. For example, as our government has done in local parks with introducing social-distancing circles, why can’t providers who have external gardens and outdoor areas use these areas to set up a similar arrangement? Each area could have a table and screen with the resident and family member sitting on either side. The outdoor environment allows safe visits without needing to go near the internal building. 2020 has been a year of challenges but we've got through by coming up with new ways of doing things.
