24.01.2022 In response to our previous posts, we were inundated with messages from jobseekers regarding their recruitment experiences . This one is quite remarkable ; this employer promotes that they are a customer centric, values led, warm organisation that acts with integrity . The candidate offered both relevant qualifications combined with strong work experience . The application consisted of a 1 page cover letter and 4 page resume. The average persons reading speed is 2 m...inutes per page. Their application was viewed by the employer at 3:50pm. The employer sent a personalised email response of 65 words (which would take about 1 minute to type), that the application was unsuccessful, at 3:53pm . This recruitment experience does not appear to be aligned to the organisations values . We are interested to understand if any other jobseekers have had incredibly poor recruitment experiences? #recruitment #humanresources See more

15.01.2022 Are you are business owner, job seeker or recruiter? Project 'JEDI' from the National Skills Commission (NCS) has appeared to report theoretically insightful, but practically absurd information regarding the current jobs crisis in Australia . Firstly, they allege 30% of recruiting employers have said they are currently having trouble filling jobs because of a lack of applicants, experience, job location and lack of technical skills . Recruiters are telling us that they ar...e receiving between 150 and 400 applicants for each advertised position . We are challenged by the NCS statistics, and we would like to hear from business owners, recruiters and job seekers on this one? In this post, we want to address 'lack of applicants' (i.e. volume of applicants per role advertised), and in our next post we discuss 'experience and technical skills'. See more

15.01.2022 Oh no .. How much `experience` did these people have; How many Apple computers did Steve Jobs make before his first? How many search engines did Larry Page and Sergy Brin build before starting Alphbet? How much experience did Jeff Bezos have with online marketplaces before building Amazon? How much experience did Mark Zuckerberg have with Social media platforms before Facebook?... . #recruitment #jobs #experience #innovations See more

07.01.2022 Are you are job seeker, recruiter or business owner? Project 'JEDI' from the National Skills Commission (NCS) has appeared to find theoretically insightful, but practically absurd information regarding the current jobs crisis in Australia . They allege 30% of recruiting employers have said they are currently having trouble filling jobs because of a lack of applicants, experience, job location and lack of technical skills. The purpose of the JEDI project is to identify ski...lls from a person’s previous career and apply them to another where there are jobs available . For example, a beauty therapist would make a good youth worker, according to JEDI, because of their impeccable client management and record keeping. A waiter could find a pharmacy sales assistant or into ICT sales . Our data indicates that recruiters continuously advertise for jobs that dictate industry experience as being essential . Candidates are also telling us that the reason they do not progress is due to ‘other candidates offered skills and experience which more closely matched the requirements for this role’ . This suggests that most recruiters shortlist candidates with industry experience, and fail to acknowledge the transferable skills that the NCS proposes . We propose that businesses and HR departments would require fundamental change to successfully adopt the ‘transferable skills’ notion that the NCS is suggesting. We are challenged by this assertion by the NCS, and we would like to hear from business owners, recruiters and job seekers on this one? In this post, we want to address 'lack of experience and technical skills (specifically transferability)’, as in our previous post we discussed 'volume of applicants’.

04.01.2022 Candidate experience fiascos . Recently, we have heard from numerous job seekers that have made it to the final round of interviews . In all examples, the candidate spent multiple hours on the internet learning about the company/industry, preparing their application, attending interviews, crafting and delivering presentations, and tailoring their responses to the companies/industries recent challenges . On numerous occasions, the candidates were informed via email that the...y would not be progressing to the next stage of the process . No explanation, no feedback, simply "we decided to progress with another candidate." Asking a candidate to invest significant time and energy throughout the process, and then not picking up the phone to deliver the message demonstrates professional incompetence and disrespect. From a candidate’s perspective, recruitment is painful under normal circumstances, but especially distressing during COVID where many candidates are feeling uncertain and nervous about their futures. As an employer or recruiter, the way in which you treat your potential (and current) employees influences how your companies brand is perceived in the market . These candidates are now detractors for your business, and will actively tell others, not to support your business . We should treat others how we want to be treated ourselves, show some empathy and respect. Your candidates are going through a lot. Pick up the phone, give them a call, thank them for their time, and give some actionable feedback or at least insight into why the decision was made . If you are an employer, and would like to understand how you can maximise the candidate experience to create advocates for your business, or need help increasing employee productivity get in touch, we are happy to help .
