21.01.2022 What is a Musculoskeletal Therapist? MSTs are qualified professionals, helping prevent injury and reduce pain by addressing postural and movement dysfunctions. An MST is hands on like a remedial massage therapist but has the exercise and rehabilitation knowledge of a physio. A musculoskeletal treatment might be any combination of the following:... Deep tissue Myofascial release Trigger pointing Muscle energy techniques Joint mobilisation Cupping Posture and/or gait assesment Strengthening exercises Stretches Musculoskeletal therapists are experts in movement and function, and so do not confine their talents to treating people who are in pain. A large part of a MST’s program is directed at preventing injury, loss of movement, and even surgery. In addition to hands-on care, there is a big emphasis on educating clients to take care of themselves outside of the clinic. Have questions? 12.01.2022 Have a beautiful weekend everyone! Let's all get out and soak up this gorgeous sunshine
09.01.2022 Lower back pain Most people have a tendency of assuming that their pain is originating from the affected site. This however is a very common misconception.... More often than not, a person's pain and discomfort is actually a symptom of your muscles compensating for a misalignment elsewhere in the body. One of the most common complaints that people have is a tight or sore lower back. This can be due to a range of different causes, however more commonly can be traced back to the psoas (pronounced so-as). The psoas is a very long muscle and is the primary connector between the torso and legs. This long muscle has significant leverage over your body and commonly can be responsible to a range of conditions such as: - lower back pain - scoliosis - hyperlordosis - varience in leg length - twisting of the hips - headaches - severe period pain - many more As the psoas shortens or contracts due to a range of reasons, the lower back muscles such as the quadratus lumborum, erector spine, latissimus dorsi, as well as the gluteus also contract as a way of balancing your body and assisting in your upright posture. This reaction will likely not present any problems immediatly however after a short amount of time, your back muscles and gluteus will grow tired and strained, causing lower back aches and pain. Your psoas needs to be released and stretched out to maintain a balanced and stable posture through your hips and lumbar region. Feel free to send me a message for any questions or alternatively, book an appointment online for a full body alignment and see if your psoas is causing you trouble.
06.01.2022 Scoliosis What is it? What causes it? How can I treat it? Put simply, scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine.... Scoliosis may develop due to a range of different factors, however is more commonly due to an uneven tightening of muscles attached to the spine such as the psoas and/or quadratus lumborum. This condition will generally develop in children shortly before entering puberty and will become permanent once the child has reached their maximum height (or close to). Scoliosis as you may be aware, is a very painful condition that will commonly cause great pain and reduced quality of life to people affected. In more severe cases, surgery may even be required to correct the spine. Did you know that if caught early enough this condition can be corrected without the need of surgery? After correction, it is expected that this condition will not form again and will prevent the individual from a life of discomfort and endless money spent managing the pain. Tonight, I urge you to take 5 minutes to check your child for any signs of the symptoms displayed in the diagram below. If you are unsure or have any questions, please feel free to send me a message
