23.01.2022 So I made the decision to go into business... but what next? I had sat on the sideline countless times watching others at this very junction in their own service based businesses. In some instances I had even been involved in the push they needed to get started and assisting with the logistics around their next steps But now being at this precipice for myself seemed totally new to me. The thought of actually taking the plunge for myself brought up feelings o...f fear Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of having to step out from behind the scenes and be seen In my mind the first steps of starting my business meant 1 Deciding what to call my business 2 Setting up my business social media accounts 3 Applying for an ABN You need to decide the first step before progressing to 2 & 3. To be honest, I had actually been thinking about a business name for 3 years. I even dabbled in the past with a name, but after sitting on that for some time I decided that no longer resonated with me. It was too cute-sy and other company's had it registered already, plus cute does not scream sophisticated, experienced, and convey trust in the fact that I will get the job done for you So you know what, I went with my name - Leah McBurney. Leah is all those things and more, so what better brand to use than one that is already uniquely mine! Leah McBurney is sophisticated experienced trustworthy a great communicator 100% gets the job done for her customers with accuracy and on time... and with flair! So off I went and registered myself as a sole trader. I now have an ABN, and I have brand that can be used for my business name. This name is flexible enough to adapt with me as I feel out and test my business and tailor my services to market needs and demands I am discovering. It doesn't run the risk of misaligning with my products and services down the track... Like in the way a friend of mine called her food business 'satay hut' then ended up selling a totally different cuisine when she quickly realised her strengths and what her customers actually wanted to eat Registering my name as a sole trader and running with that as my business name is authentic, it's real and it'll never be irrelevant I honestly don't know why it took me 3 years to decide So if you've been contemplating a move in business for yourself, don't delay anymore. Don't let this one decision hold you back from starting your own business, like I did. Be authentically yourself and own yourself and your brand. If you know someone who's just starting in business or thinking about starting their own business, why not tag them in the comments now, so that they can follow along and learn from my experiences in setting up my own business? I'll be continuing to share more of my own journey in business. Yours in success! Leah
22.01.2022 I'm new to being a business owner - the catastrophic shifts that occurred earlier in 2020 meant that after 25 years of being an employee, I took this as an opportunity to start my very own business. The time is NOW to take those decades of experience working in only 1 small business at a time to build their brand, deliver exceptional products & services and nurture their customers through personalised service and WOW experiences... and focus this energy toward new opportuni...ties. I am no longer limited by the constraints of being an employee and it feels GOOD! It has been a scary ride at times, the feeling of no safety net, and the uncertainty of next week's income combined with the uncertainty of the greater world events has really tested my limits. But the people I've had the opportunity to help so far and the value this has brought to not only their businesses, but also to my life and career experience has been so, so worth it! And it's not slowing down, in fact the reach and reward is becoming greater with each opportunity, new meeting with a business owner, each project I've been a part of, and each solution I create The greatest hurdle for me in business so far has been my own mindset, to only have myself to answer to and to hold me accountable. I have been kind to myself during these early months of business, giving myself the freedom to enjoy the warm sun on a midday walk if I felt like it, or a sleep-in if I didn't want to work on a particular day, blocking out time in my schedule for a day-time yoga class, long lunch "meetings" with business contacts, endless coffee breaks - actually I am a pretty understanding boss, lol. But the coolest thing is when I actually FOCUS my talents and skills toward the success of others and the successes of my own business exciting things grow, develop and are achieved! I am thankful for the abrupt push I was given in April 2020 toward the unemployment line. It truly was a gift that forced me to take the plunge into the big scary world and begin this next chapter of life, where I am an entrepreneur and business owner and 100% accountable to myself and 100% responsible for my own success. If you can relate to my experiences in some way, please let me know? I'm wondering if sharing more about my own experiences of business startup would be valuable to you? Leave me a comment to let me know. Yours in success! Leah

11.01.2022 Since taking the plunge and starting my own freelance business back in April there’s been no slowing down, in fact the reach and reward is becoming greater with each opportunity, new meeting with a business owner, each project I've been a part of, and each solution I create. What great risk have you taken in your life (recently or in the past) and what outcomes did you achieve? I’d love to hear your own moments of risk and reward
11.01.2022 When I started my business, I setup a basic gmail.com email address. I quickly realised that although this email service is free, it's not going to cut the mustard when it comes to my business' branding Having a professional email address speaks volumes - [email protected] in no way conveys the professional image that's needed for my business to attract clients. I am now the owner of my very own website domain after all, so why not setup an email address aligned... with my domain? I needed [email protected] or [email protected] as my business email address! I am already a google user with my free gmail.com email address and can see the value of this email service as it includes the use of other google apps like calendar and Drive, all very useful for running a business efficiently. The cost of gsuite.google.com can become a little pricey for multiple email accounts, when compared to say godaddy.com or crazydomains.com.au for email hosting, but the power of google goes way beyond just email so this is why I decided to go with google as my email host. I will also say that setup of my domain hosted by godaddy.com with Gsuite was an easy process too, and I didn't need an IT tech to help me Some tips I can give you if you're at this point in setting up your own business, which I wish I new sooner are: 1 The sooner the better. I was already a few months into business using my free gmail email, when I decided to level up to my own professional email address This meant that when I made that transition, all the documents I had already saved to Google Drive needed to be downloaded and moved to my new Gsuite business Drive.. urghh! All my logins are now a mix of my free gmail email and my business gmail email. And all my appointments needed to be transitioned to my business Calendar. Maybe it's the OCD coming out in me but, if I had made my business email address sooner, things would be tidier and alot cleaner This isn't a game changer, but if you're like me and like things done right the first time, getting professional sooner with your email address will save you time cleaning this type of stuff up later. 2 If you are considering Squarespace.com as an option down the track to host your website signing up to this platform includes a bonus 1 year of Gsuite complimentary. This is a platform I'm actually considering for my website... which is something I'll be sharing about at a later date, and so I definitely wish I knew this about this deal before I took the plunge in investing in my Gsuite account. If you know someone who's just starting in business or thinking about starting their own business, why not tag them in the comments now, so that they can follow along and learn from my experiences in setting up my own business? I'll be continuing to share more of my own journey in business. Yours in success! Leah

01.01.2022 When starting out in business, it’s important to cast a wide net when choosing your business name. You don’t want to run the risk of your business name misaligning with the products and services you’re offering down the track... Like in the way a friend of mine called her food business 'satay hut' then ended up selling a totally different cuisine when she quickly realised her strengths and what her customers actually wanted to eat For me registering my name as a... sole trader and running with that as my business name was the way to go. My name is authentic, it's real and it'll never be irrelevant so if you’re wanting to start offering a service based business, talk to your accountant and see what’s best for you. The truth is it actually took me 3 years of contemplation to take that step of making my business official and now that it’s done I honestly don't know why it took me so long So if you've been contemplating a move in business for yourself, don't delay anymore. Don't let this one decision hold you back from starting your own business, like I did. Be authentically yourself and own yourself and your brand.
