03.01.2022 WICKHAM COUPLE URGE PEOPLE TO CHECK SKIN FOR CANCER A few months ago, Pilbara locals Mitch and Kate Marinko went to see a skin specialist for a general check u...p for Mitch, but they went home with a diagnosis for his unsuspecting wife. I only went to support my husband, I dont have any moles or freckles or anything suspicious, Kate Marinko told Ngaarda Medias Tangiora Hinaki. As soon as he saw my skin even without the blue he could tell that I had what they call a solar keratosis - theres some small areas of scaly skin which are precancerous cells and also one area that has basal cell carcinoma, which means it had gone to the next stage. Kate also talked about a similar basal cell carcinoma on her hand which, while appearing like nothing, needed to be burnt off. Treatment for the face however, went a little differently; the chemotherapy cream used to target potentially cancerous and/or damaged cells that caused the serious skin damage was described as a painful process. It took 4 days for the first sign of any damaged cells to come up but it wasnt until day 26 that it actually started to blister. It was a constant burning sensation for 5 or 6 days, said Kate. While the couple is grateful that they were able to get ahead of Kates skin damage, they wanted to spread their story, especially across the Pilbara, for as we know, the sun is particularly harsh in this region of the world. This prevention process and checkup only cost the couple $138, and $84 were claimed back through medicare; a small cost to pay to prevent a potentially fatal occurrence. The Marinkos are currently trying to organise a mobile skin clinic to visit the Pilbara and have been in touch with the WA Skin Clinic and the Lions Skin Institute to promote better skin health for the north west.
