21.01.2022 One way of treating myself to the citrus fruit season is making Glühwein or mulled wine on a cold winter night! The mixed smell of cloves and orange makes me nostalgic for the European Christmas markets in December. You use your entire orange, skin and juice, to make Glühwein. All of it goes in the pot. This will enhance the fruity flavour of your drink and you’ll make the most out of your fruit. Have a go at making some homemade mulled wine this winter! Cheers! 21.01.2022 "Customers can stock their bags with food, ranging from fruit and vegetables to bread and some packaged items, and then leave a donation in a wooden box on the way out."
21.01.2022 If you find yourself with some leftover avocado - or you are preparing yourself for future smoothie needs - cut the ripe avocado in half, remove the seed and peel. You can dice the avocado or leave as half or quarter, depending on how you like to portion," Claire Tindale-Penning of Australian Avocados explains.
20.01.2022 The Eat Local Week at the Scenic Rim is only one month away! Check out their packed schedule for the week. There's so much to see and do! I'm particularly excited to visit the Crop to Cup event at the Green Lane coffee plantation. What are you keen to see?
19.01.2022 Avocados are in season! Who else is excited about this? When you bring your avocados home, let them ripen on the bench top for a couple of days. Either give them a gentle squeeze to see if they’ve ripened or check under the stem. If the stem can be easily removed and it's green underneath it, it’s ready to go. Once it’s ripe you can move them to your fridge where they’ll stay edible for up to 2 weeks. If you need to store half an avocado, it’s best to rub a bit of lemon ju...ice on the open surface to prevent it from going brown. Place it in an airtight container and store in your fridge. This also goes for freezing your avocados. Cut the avocado into cubes, place them in an airtight container and drizzle a bit of lemon juice on it before putting in the freezer. These cubes are perfect for a smoothie or even baking! Make the most out of the avocado season and make it last longer by storing them correctly. . . . . . #avocado #storage #inseason #seasonal #winter #qldwinter #brisbane #australia #wastenotwantnot #buyseasonal #buylocal #foodwaste #waste #fightfoodwaste #sustainability See more
19.01.2022 Bright coloured citrus fruits are now in season. Perfect timing to boost your Vitamin C for the winter. It’s best to leave your citrus fruits out on your bench to ripen for at least 3-4 days and then move them to your refrigerator. Avoid using a plastic bag to store them, they need air circulation otherwise they’ll develop mould. Either keep them loose in your crisper or in a meshed bag. Make the most out of your citrus fruit by freezing their juices and zest, then you’ll a...lways have it available for any recipe! . . . . . #citrus #orange #lemon #fruit #winter #inseason #seasonal #winter #qldwinter #brisbane #australia #storage #wastenotwantnot #buyseasonal #buylocal #foodwaste #waste #fightfoodwaste See more
18.01.2022 I took advantage of the seasonal avocados and kale and I managed to make my own winter bowl! This is perfect for a light lunch or dinner and very easy to make. To make it prepare 1 cup of brown rice for the base. While the rice is simmering chop some kale and sauté it with olive oil and garlic, probably 2-3 cloves, until the leaves are soft. Chop the avocado the way you like it, I just used a quarter of one for my bowl and stored the rest correctly in fridge. In addition, ...I bought some smoked peppered salmon to add some protein to the mix. Once the rice is ready transfer it to your bowl and place the cooked kale, avocado and fish on top of it all. Finally, I topped it all off with a light drizzle of sweet soy sauce! With all seasonal vegetables and fruits available, you have a lot of choice on what you can put in your winter bowl. What are your favourite toppings? . . . . . . #winterbowl #bowl #kale #avocado #salmon #fish #smokedsalmon #brownrice #easylunch #easydinner #inseason #seasonal #winter #qldwinter #brisbane #australia #wastenotwantnot #buyseasonal #buylocal #foodwaste #waste #fightfoodwaste See more

15.01.2022 Did you know that you can eat the beetroot leaves? I took that opportunity to make a beetroot leaf smoothie. I baked the beetroots separately the day before to have them ready for the smoothie. Then I just chopped some beetroot leaves, added a small apple, a cup of frozen blueberries and topped it all off with orange juice. I love the bright colour of this nutritious drink and it’s very easy to make. 11.01.2022 The cold mornings confirm that winter has arrived in Brisbane! The perfect weather for a creamy potato and leek soup! Leeks have been in season in Queensland since autumn and it’ll carry on throughout winter. Did you know that you can eat the green leafy part of a leek? And that you can regrow the leek by placing the white cut off root end in water? Make the most out of this vegetable! This soup was very easy to make and so delicious! I’ve added a few strips of Pancetta ...and charred leek leaves for additional flavour. Enjoy this creamy soup on these cold evenings! 08.01.2022 Another great vegetable that’s in season is Kale! It’s considered a superfood due its high iron content. Kale has a distinctive taste but it’s great in smoothies and simply as a side. I like to sauté chopped kale with olive oil and lots of garlic.
