24.01.2022 At the start of this year, I set myself a goal to spend more of my time consuming more valuable content, content that would be good for my brain, and so the challenge to read 20 books in 2020 was thrown down. As we approach the halfway point of the year, Im on track with 10 books down and this little pile arrived in the post last week to keep me going for the next few months. But, as tempting as it is to get stuck straight in, all the books are being put aside this week because we are busily finishing off a project which is launching THIS FRIDAY!! Stay tuned to our socials this week where Ill share some sneak peaks and if you want to be amongst the first to know about it, hop on over to www.leannaj.com.au and sign up to our mailing list to get the inside scoop! #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #ypbusiness #smallbusiness
24.01.2022 Recruitment...it can feel a little bit like grabbing a bucket load of money, a whole wad of time then walking in to your nearest casino and throwing it all on red with your fingers crossed. And lets be honest, there is a bit of gambling involved in finding a new member of your team, but there are also some tips to keep in mind which can help you to make the best decision. Heres my top 3: 1. Recruit to your values - try not to get too distracted by your potential candidates... impressive experience or education. While those things are still important, if you recruit someone who has no regard for the values which are important to your business, your problems might only be just beginning. 2. Meet with your shortlisted candidates more than once and perhaps even in different locations. I know it takes more of your time but the more time you spend with someone, the more you will get to know them and their suitability for your role and your business. Not everyone copes well with being put before a panel in a boardroom either, a less formal setting could allow their personality to shine a little more naturally. 3. Reference check. Always. Weve all had wins and losses in recruitment, its the nature of the beast. Do you have any tried and tested recruiting tips youd like to share? #recruitment #recruiting #hr #humanresources #hrconsulting #hrconsultant #smallbusiness #yp #ypbusiness #womeninbusiness #ichoosesa
23.01.2022 I feel like Ive done little else this week other than delivering endless food snacks and fulfilling the constant demands of two sick children home from school and child care, but it got me thinking about feedback! (Clearly I need to up my game on the snack front!!) Feedback is one of the most critical tools in an HR practitioners kit-bag, and it should be for small business owners as well. Employees rely on us to tell them when they are doing a good job and when there... are things they could do to improve, after all how else would they know? When you have employees who are receiving regular, constructive feedback on the work they are doing, you have more engaged and more productive employees right across your business. To receive the greatest benefit of a solid feedback culture though, that feedback cant be a one-way street. We have to create an environment where we not only give regular feedback but receive it as well. Its called 360-degree feedback. The UKs largest hardware retailer, Screwfix, have reported the benefits of 360-degree feedback in their company where they have created a culture based on openness and honesty. Each fortnight employees are invited to share their feedback without restriction - nothing is off limits. One of the changes implemented by Screwfix as a result of this process has seen their customer experience completely revolutionised - something they admit would never have come to fruition without their feedback model in place. Closer to home and on a small business scale, Ive seen a service business change their operating methods based on feedback from their employees, seeing their services delivered faster and with a significant reduction in the reported stress levels of their team. Like Screwfix, this business wouldnt have been able to make these changes without first receiving the feedback. With that in mind, Im off to take some of my own advice and see if I cant come to an arrangement on the snack selections! #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consulting #hrconsulting #smallbusiness #ypbusiness #ichoosesa #feedbackmodel #feedback #360degreefeedback
23.01.2022 Have you ever seen a manager or employer who looks a bit like this guy, always has his head in the sand when things get hard? Or maybe youve been this guy yourself? #nojudgement Research, and Id argue common sense, says that a leaders avoidance of issues in the workplace like conflict, feedback, difficult conversations, misconduct wreaks havoc on company culture, stress and engagement levels of employees, absenteeism and of course, productivity. So much so that they coined ...a term to describe it - The Ostrich Effect. In fact, a study conducted by Leadership IQ of board members who had dismissed a CEO, found that 23% of those members suggested denying reality was a key reason for the dismissal! So how do we keep our head *out* of the sand when it comes to these really difficult issues in the workplace? Well, there are lots of ways but as a starting point, having a good quality Employment Agreement and solid company policies in place help to guide your response in many cases. And secondly, facing up to those issues which make your stomach turn in a really clear and concise way so that your employees understand the standards or the values that are important to your business. Clear is kind, unclear is unkind - Brené Brown. Its Monday, lets make sure our head is out of the sand and is looking towards the opportunities of the new week. Is there something that you might be avoiding dealing with that youd like some help with? 21.01.2022 Who needs some more paperwork to round out the end of financial year? Anyone? Last week I mentioned here about the increase to the national minimum wage and the alteration that makes to Awards and while all employers will have to check to make sure their employees are paid on or above the new award rates, those employers who pay their employees an annualised wage have to take that check a little bit further. An annualised wage is one which is above the award rate and is int...ended to cover other entitlements such as overtime, annual leave loading and allowances. For the first time, some awards will now require employers to do a calculation to ensure that the annualised wage for each employee still exceeds their minimum entitlements under the award taking in to account the increase in award rates. Are you still with me? Im nearly done with the bad news! Those employers will also need to keep a record of that calculation as evidence that their arrangement complies. Now for the good news...if this all sounds too hard and too much at this frantic time of year, reach out and we can work through this together! #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consultant #annualisedwages #ypbusiness #yp #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness

17.01.2022 I was thrilled to be invited to speak on a virtual panel hosted by @theedgeau yesterday with some other HR superstars. The key takeaway from our conversation about the future of work was around leadership and given our current environment, leading with compassion and empathy with your people as your core focus. We might see the taglines which say were all in this together, but your employees response to the crisis will be very much individual. ... #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consulting #hrconsulting #smallbusiness #ypbusiness #ichoosesa #leadership
17.01.2022 A little while ago I popped a post on here answering one of my most common questions; what is HR, and this question comes up so often that I thought it was also worth talking about what HR is not, and to round out the conversation, why you need it. You can find this series of blog posts on my website www.leannaj.com.au. There are elements of what HR encompasses which might need the assistance of further expertise like accounting, legal and sometimes even medical. While HR e...xperts can create a whole lot of magic in your business, we do have some limitations (only a few ). Check out the HR Debunked: What is HR and why do you need it 3-part blog series or book in for a free 30 minute HR health check if youd like to have a chat. #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consultant #ypbusiness #yp #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness
16.01.2022 Are you spreading your attitude around your workplace? In a recent article, Kate Neilson tells that employees are saying negative emotions in the workplace are making their days at work much harder. This is due to a phenomenon called emotional contagion. Researcher Sigal Barsade of the Wharton School of Business explains that having even one negative person in a workplace can have a continued negative effect on those around them, who then have a negative effect on those ar...ound them. Its called the affective spiral. The reverse can also be true. Positive emotions too can be contagious which is a good reminder to keep in mind the quote by Dennis and a Wendy Mannering, Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching? Its a big responsibility isnt it? But its one we should take pretty seriously. So how do we fix or protect our workplace culture against the spread of negativity or, how do we ensure that positivity *is* spread around the workplace? Well, it starts at the top. The way our business owners, leaders, managers show up on any given day has a significant affect on the mood of their employees - your people are watching you and will mimic your behaviour back to you. If we want to get really clever, leaders can use this to their advantage in times of uncertainty or chaos by showing calmness and positivity, speaking more slowly, being conscious of their body language, and putting aside any personal negativity they may feel towards the situation to encourage their people to feel the same way. So tell me, what are your top tips for leaving your negativity at the door and stepping into positive emotions, even if youre not really feeling them? #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consulting #hrconsulting #smallbusiness #ypbusiness #ichoosesa #leadership

14.01.2022 I am pretty excited to be heading away with my family for a little break, from my day job (Leanna J Consulting remains very much open!), and our usual routine to look at this view each morning. Im looking forward to working on client projects while sitting in this very spot and making some more progress on my 20 books in 2020 goal too. It has me thinking though, have you had employees working from home (or perhaps from their beach house ) during COVID-19 and if so, what have been your biggest lessons learned from having a geographically spread workforce? #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #yp #ypbusiness
12.01.2022 I was lucky enough to be featured in the members newsletter for Stacey Keating Fitness a few weeks ago where I was asked about what I do and how I blend my work with Leanna J Consulting, my day job as an HR Manager for an insurance brokerage and my role as a wife and mum to 3 children. Spoiler alert: I dont have the magic answer! But hopefully with more women speaking up about the fact that we dont have it all together all of the time, we might help others to feel more *no...rmal* about their own situation. Thanks so much Stacey and team for the opportunity to share a snippet of my story with your community. #hr #mumsinbusiness #hrconsultant #womenraisingwomen #yp #ypbusiness
11.01.2022 It has just hit wine-thirty here at our HQ! Homeschooling is done for now and I can't wait to take one small step towards normality on Monday morning when the school bus arrives! It's got me thinking about the changes I want to implement into my life to keep a bit more of the calm, a bit more of the connection and a lot more of the gratitude that isolation has given our family. I'm in no rush to fill that schedule back up like it was before this experience! ... I'd love to know, what have been the lessons you've taken from isolation, and what activities or tasks are getting the boot from your schedule? Have a fabulous weekend! See more

09.01.2022 Ive been reading the latest instalment of Glennon Doyles wisdom, Untamed, and she dropped this little nugget which Ive found pretty insightful. In business as in life, there are some pretty big decisions which need to be made from time to time, and theres some which are just plain hard. I loved how Glennon explained that when contemplating these decisions we should take the time to be still and tune in to the answer that we inherently know is wise. ... Its not rush around like a mad person and know, its not ask everyone else what their opinions are and then stress about how youre going to keep them all happy and know, she says be *still* and know. And I think thats pretty good advice! Weve been making some pretty big decisions at Leanna J HQ recently and I have to say, Glennons advice has not only been well timed but perfectly pertinent too. Id love to hear if this rings true for you as well! #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #hrconsulting #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness #yp #ypbusiness #ichoosesa

06.01.2022 End of Financial Year celebrations! For some businesses, the end of financial year is cause for some serious celebrations. It might be the end of your peak season (Im looking at you tax Accountants ), you could be celebrating some great results or you could be showing your team some love for purely surviving what has been a pretty challenging 2020 so far! While I dont want to throw a dampener on the party, employers continue to have obligations at these events, and... so do their employees. Our top 4 things to be aware of at work related social functions are: 1. Establish a start and finish time on your invitation for your event so that there is a distinction between the work related function and any after-party which might continue on. 2. Remind your employees that the policies which apply to them in the workplace will also apply to the work related function, specifically the policies around drugs and alcohol, discrimination, bullying, sexual harassment and work health and safety. 3. Consider arranging transport for your employees if you are holding the party a distance away from their homes. Providing taxi vouchers or chauffeured transport are good options for ensuring your staff arrive home safely. 4. Be sure to supply enough food where alcohol is being consumed and consider asking a management representative to responsibly supervise the event and handle any issues which may arise. #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #smallbusiness #yp #ypbusiness See more
05.01.2022 The ATO is officially open for receiving JobKeeper applications from today, through its business portal using your MyGov ID. 05.01.2022 Well lookie here! Its amazing what you come across when mindlessly searching the internet. Heres the Leanna J logo looking pretty fine on the website of its creators @sarahlauradesign. Sarah and Laura are two fabulous South Australian business owners who have been an absolute delight to work with. So much so that Ive recently hit go on a new project with them which is pretty exciting. Check out their page and throw them a follow if you can.
05.01.2022 Ive been working with Dee from Envision Barossa Yorke Mid North and was pretty chuffed to be asked to write a little something for her newsletter which landed in my inbox this afternoon. Dee and I chatted recently about how we are both seeing business owners emerge from COVID-19 with some hesitation towards employing permanent employees and are instead looking to engage independent contractors for their labour needs. Unfortunately in many circumstances its not quite that ...simple due to the Sham Contracting provisions in the Fair Work Act 2009. To give business owners a bit more information on what they should consider when deciding how to engage their labour, I wrote a little article to explain. If youd like a copy of the article, hop on over to my website and subscribe to my mailing list and it will be delivered straight to your inbox by the end of the week! My top tip, consider outsourcing your HR instead of your labour! #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consultant #ypbusiness #yp #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness
04.01.2022 J A R G O N F R E E F R I D A Y If theres something that really annoys me, its the use of jargon in the way we communicate. (Check out a video I posted on here a while back to find out why!) So I thought I could use Fridays here to decode some of the jargon that sweeps around the HR / business world, and Im kicking off today with this one... Job Crafting. ... If Job Crafting was anything like the art and crafting my 3-year-old has going on at my kitchen table today, Id be hanging up my HR hat!! Way too much mess!! Fortunately though, Job Crafting is a lot more exciting than glitter and glue and in fact, can have just as much meaning for your employees as those heartfelt little creations they make. Job Crafting is the term used to describe employees who are motivated to customise their own jobs to better fit their passions, strengths and interests. It helps them to find more meaning in their work. Yep, I can hear those employers at the back saying why cant my employees just do the job Im paying them to do? I get it! The flip-side of squashing Job Crafting though, is unmotivated employees who dont really care too much about the work they do...workplace accidents perhaps, maybe increased absenteeism, I think you get the idea. All good reasons for employers to get involved in the process of Job Crafting and work with employees to ensure the core requirements of the role are met, while also crafting a more fulfilling and engaging role for your team member. Id love you to send me through some suggestions for Jargon-free Friday next week. Have you got any terms or phrases you wish you understood but dont? They dont even have to be HR related! Have a wonderful weekend. #jargonfreefriday #jargonsucks #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #consulting #hrconsulting #smallbusiness #ypbusiness #ichoosesa
03.01.2022 Read and Understood the whole contract. I talk about Employment Agreements quite a lot with my clients, and the existence of one is often the first question Ill ask before I can help with any kind of disciplinary situation. 02.01.2022 Our government has been very busy rolling out their new initiatives, almost every day it seems. In amongst it has been some important chages to the Fair Work Act and to some Awards to help provide some relief for employers and employees in this ever changing landscape created by COVID-19. Coming in to effect very soon (from the first full pay period on or after 8th April), employees may now be eligible for unpaid Pandemic Leave and / or the opportunity to take their accru...ed Annual Leave at half pay. These new entitlements are available to be used immediately and must start prior to 30 June which is the current expiry date of these new provisions. To find out if your employees are eligible, and to get more info on the notice and evidence requirements that apply - you can check out the Fair Work website at www.fairwork.gov.au or send me through an email and I'll be happy to give you a hand. Whatever arrangements you can come to with your employees, remember to document them in writing and keep on their file for future reference of required. #hr #humanresources #hrconsultant #yp #ypbusiness #sabusiness #sasmallbusiness #smallbusiness See more
02.01.2022 I had an email drop in to my inbox this week and it shared a story about recognising value. While this story went on to talk about knowing our value as service providers, it got me thinking about how we show value to others and in particular, our employees. We all have an innate desire to feel like our efforts are seen, recognised and appreciated and when employers show that for the work of their employees, in a way that is meaningful to them, its no surprise that their en...gagement with their role and their motivation to give their best increases. A recent study confirms this to be true and further found that a 5 point increase in engagement resulted in a 3 point increase in revenue the following year. Pretty cool huh! The critical part however is recognising each employee in a way that is important or motivating to them. How do you know what that is? Im glad you asked, because its pretty simple. Talk to them, and listen with a curiosity to learn about them. Thats it! Theres no secret formula, theres no complicated rules. The trickiest part can often be carving the time out of your day to engage with your team but I promise you, you wont regret it. Have you ever been on the receiving end of a really thoughtful reward or sign of recognition from an employer? Id love you to share! Ill go first in the comments. #hr #hrconsultant #smallbusiness #yp #ypbusiness #womeninbusiness
