23.01.2022 The vestibular system operates through receptors in the inner ear and in conjunction with position in space, input from the eyes, and feedback from muscle and joint receptors, is able to contribute to posture and appropriate response of the visual system to maintain a field of vision. Vestibular sensory input is a powerful tool in helping children with sensory needs. Vestibular activities are playful ways to promote performance and tolerance to movement activities. To... treat and address problems with vestibular sensory processing, activities should provide movement and resistance to movement. In these activities, it is essential that children have active participation. Vestibular activities, when used correctly, have the ability to calm and soothe a child, as well as improve many aspects of development like coordination, handwriting, attention, and even reading! Keep an eye out for our next post with a fun, interactive vestibular activity !

20.01.2022 Development of pencil grasp patterns These 4 grasps are common in pencil grasp and fine motor development. Putting pencils into little hands before they are ready may lead to immature and inefficient pencil grasps. It is important to engage your child in age-appropriate activities to support the development of the upper body, shoulder, arm and wrist muscles to lay the foundations for a good pencil grasp. For more information regarding your child’s grasp patterns, speak to one of our lovely therapists #pencilgrasp #finemotorskills #prewritingskills #graspdevelopment #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapyforkids

06.01.2022 Danielle & Nadine showing a fun and engaging vestibular activity using the disk swing! Our vestibular system is so important because it links to our vision, auditory and proprioceptive systems. Because of that connection, vestibular processing affects hand-eye coordination (visual motor skills) and how we move our bodies (body awareness). If the vestibular system is under-developed or there are processing problems, you might see surprising difficulties in your child such as:... Difficulty sitting still (very wiggly) Poor handwriting Poor core strength (w-sitting, hard-time sitting with good posture) Poor balance Poor motor planning (figuring out how to move the body in a new way like riding a bike for the first time) Difficulty problem solving Poor organisational skills Poor attention Clumsiness If you believe your child is experiencing difficulties with their vestibular system speak to one of our therapist for some more information !
