24.01.2022 Some information on developmental milestones in feeding for parents and therapists . 1. Pacifiers are an oral sensory tool for newborns to self regulate in bet...ween feeds . By 4-6 month the baby has new ways to self soothe (touch, sound, music, rocking etc.) this is the ideal time to ditch the pacifier. A psychological attachment is forming. Once it passes this age, the more difficult it is to wean. The long term impact can be dental issues , palatal vault changes and speech sound errors. Orofacial Myologist don't start formal programs on this until four but oral motor feeding specialists can help young babies wean with replacement oral sensory tools that encourage non discriminatory and discriminatory mouthing. Prevention can help decrease the need for cessation. 2. Breastfeeding helps develop the Orofacial complex . Bottles are not the same so while breastfeeding doesn't have an designated stop point , bottles should be replaced with straw and cup by around a year . 12-14 months being the end goal. So at about 4-6 months start introducing cups and 7-9 month straws . TalkTools makes amazing training tools like recessed lid cup and honey bear straw to assist with this transition. 3. Spout cups / sippy cups like the one pictured are NOT a developmental milestone and are sometimes worse on mouth development than a bottle. Anything that is a not a rounded straw encourages tongue thrusting and jaw jutting and eventually disruption to dental eruption and speech. Parents are often surprised in my evaluations when I give them this advice because their pediatrician did not .....but oral motor and feeding specialists know the intricate details of the development of oral sensory motor skills for feeding and work hard to prevent our patients from problems in the future. For more information , refer to the texts: Diane Bahr : Nobody Taught me or My Mother THAT! Lori Overland and Robyn Merkel-Walsh: A Sensory Motor Approach to Feeding

23.01.2022 The NDIS can be a tricky and daunting for both families and therapists. It was great to spend some time today learning about how to apply to get Assistive Technology, like communication devices, under the NDIS. . Did you know that communication is a basic human right? 21.01.2022 How amazing is this video?! It’s an important reminder that we don’t need children to use words to have a conversation with them. What this Dad did great at: - Following the child’s lead and being interested in what the child is interested in and responding to gestures like pointing. - Taking turns when talking and waiting for the child to have their turn in the conversation before saying or doing something new.... - Encouraging communication during screen time. Screen time can be beneficial when it is used to facilitate a communication interaction. - Repeating what the child says and then expanding on it. - Being expressive with lots of facial expressions and a singsong voice (child-directed speech). - Modelling different language structures (like answering questions, greetings, commenting, vocabulary) without simplifying it too much. #earlylanguage #babytalk #leaptherapy #speechpathology

21.01.2022 How much do you know about someone just from looking at them? Can you see an invisible disability?

20.01.2022 Reading with your child helps promote brain development and imagination, teaches your child about language and emotions, and strengthens your relationship. What can you do: Spend time reading with your child everyday. It’s ok to read the same story, repetition helps your child learn. Talk about the pictures in the book, and try to guess what will happen next!... Try singing rhymes and songs, or telling stories from your culture. Talk about sounds! A cat says meow, and the word cat starts with a /k/ Anytime is a good time for story! Thanks Big W for helping kids across Australia enjoy books. #leaptherapy #literacy Reposting @bigwaustralia: ... "At BIG W we believe in story time and that's why we are giving Aussie families access to more books at home to build healthy minds and bright futures for Australia’s children. 20.01.2022 Assistive Technology is essential in giving people a voice and today it is being recognised in America #wespeechies #speechpathology #leaptherapy #abilitynotdisability #standup4commrights Reposting: @tobii_dynavox... On March 11, 2019 a resolution was passed designating today as National Assistive Technology Awareness Day. To celebrate, we’re remembering some of our favorite quotes from you, our community, on what you wish the world knew about Assistive Technology and AAC. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments I wish the world knew that just because a person is non-verbal, does not mean they cannot be great communicators!" Sabrina Carroll I wish the world knew that communication is a basic human need and that AAC and Assistive Tech are not luxuries, but rather necessary tools for the individuals that need them." Mark Gliebe I wish the world knew to talk to me and give me a chance to answer you, my brain works faster than yours I guarantee it, but it takes a minute to write a sentence!" Andy Leighty "I wish the world knew the real value of modeling and not to be fearful of it. I also wish more people understood that it is important to wait for a response!" 20.01.2022 When was the last time you had your little ones’ hearing checked? . Red flags for hearing loss in children: not responding to things said to them, or not seeming to notice that you have spoken to them starting to talk later than children the same age... not saying words and sentences the right way having difficulty hearing one voice when several people are talking missing quick or soft sounds having difficulties learning at school . You can help when communicating with someone with difficulties hearing by: Be aware of background noise. Where possible turn off background noises or move away. Noises like music, TV, others talking, and even an aircon humming can make it harder to listen to what they are needing to listen to. Stand in front of the person and make sure you have eye contact before you start talking. Use visuals and gestures. Point to or show them what you are talking about. get their hearing assessed by an Audiologist . Speech Pathologists help people with hearing impairments learn speech sounds and language to communicate with their friends and family. #hearingawarenessweek #standup4humanrights #worldhearingday #abilitynotdisability #leaptherapy See more

17.01.2022 Did you know that the most important overall contributor to happiness is a person’s relationships? Research shows that there is a central importance of relationships for our wellbeing and our happiness. Many studies have shown that both the quality and quantity of social connections have an impact on our health and longevity as well as psychological wellbeing. So taking action to strengthen our relationships and build connections is essential for happiness.... Speech Pathologists work on social skills to ensure that people have the tools to develop and maintain social interactions to make friends and build relationships. Speechies help people to: Use language in different ways for different reasons. Like how to greet someone, how to provide information, or asking for things. Change the way language is used for the listener or situation. Like knowing when to give more information when the person you are taking to doesn’t know the topic, or talking differently to a baby vs an adult. Follow conversation rules. Like knowing how to take turns talking, stay on topic or change the topic, when to end the conversation, or using body language. #InternationalDayOfHappiness #happinessforall #socialskills #speechpathology #Leaptherapy

16.01.2022 Have you ever seen a swallow like this? This is a video X-ray of a person swallowing, it is known as a Videofluroscopy Swallow Study. This is a type of assessment is used by Speech Pathologists to look at a swallow from the inside and to see if any food or drink is going into the lungs. When food or drinks go down into the lungs it is called aspiration, if left untreated this can lead to an aspiration pneumonia (an infection in the lungs). #Dysphagia #SwallowAware2019 #speechpathology

13.01.2022 What is Otitis Media? Otitis Media is a type of ear infection that happens in the middle ear (behind the eardrum) and it is common in young children. These types of ear infections can be painful and cause hearing loss. . When children have Otitis Media fluid builds up behind the eardrum stopping the 3 tiny bones in the ear from vibrating and turning these vibrations into nerve signals in the inner ear. This makes it difficult to hear, kind of like trying to hear underwater, a...nd is called a conductive hearing loss. . Ear infections can impact language development in children if they are reoccur very frequently or if the fluid build up behind the eardrum does not clear easily or by itself (commonly known as glue ear). This is because children cannot hear language or speech sounds to learn them! . Who can help? Your child should see their doctor (like a GP or ENT) as soon as possible to provide medical treatment if able. An Audiologist can test how well your child's middle ear and eardrum work and how this may be impacting their ability to hear. A Speechie tests your child's speech and language skills, and can work with your child if they have any delays or problems speaking. . #hearingawarenessweek #checkyourhearing #leaptherapy #ndis #wespeechies See more
