06.01.2022 Interesting post , this was written by my Pa's sister....about Learmonths Place.... Weekly Times Saturday 7 May 1921 THE LODDON RIVER. Willmont Learmonth. who lives at Memsie, Bridgewater-on-the-Loddon. writes; Dear Aunt Connie, This is the first time I have written to you. I will take for my subject the Loddon River. The Loddon River flows by our farm. At one place in the river if is shaped like a horseshoe, and they call it 'Horseshoe Bend. Farther down the river is an i...sland called Cod Island. The Smoky Creek runs through our farm to join the river. Gum trees and wattle trees grow on its banks. The main fish which live in the Loddon River are cod. perch, bream and the black. In places the banks of the Loddon are steep and rocky. The water in places measures about 40ft. deep and three chains wide. Major Mitchell crossed the river about 15 miles from our place. I am nine years old and in the fourth grade at school. Please may I write again? (Yes. Willmont, I shall be pleased to hear from you. Aunt Connie.) Willmont Jane Learmonth was born in 1912 to Thomas & Carol Bertha Learmonth nee Treloar. She married a Mr Wickham and died in 1965 at Bendigo aged 52 years. See more
