23.01.2022 Ponder This: In a society where attention spans are now estimated to last around 8 seconds, we'll never get the chance to hear all of the wonderful things pe...ople with DLD have to say if we don't slow down and listen to understand, not reply. In English, we have a variety of ways to ask questions, including what, where, who, when, why, and how. These are often referred to as Wh-questions. We use these questions all the time, but children with DLD often struggle to understand the different types of questions and how to answer them. Here are some alternatives to how was your day? What did you do today? Who did you play with? What was the best part of your day? What was the worst part of your day? Most importantly, give people with DLD plenty of time to respond. Master yourself to not jump in and answer on their behalf. Share these questions and tips with friends and family to help them connect with people with DLD on a deeper level.

23.01.2022 Well that was fun! I feel so privileged to have been invited to work with some amazing staff at Bidwill Public School this week. Can't wait to see the results from our Tier 1 and 2 Communication Intervention plans to help preschool students this year.

22.01.2022 Some of my little friends just work so hard in their weekly sessions that I couldn't resist sharing... Here we are working on saying /t/ sounds at the ends of words. So clever!

22.01.2022 After Emily Davies completed a speech pathology student placement with us in 2020 as part of her Masters in Speech Pathology studies we just couldn't resist the opportunity to employ her as an Allied Health Assistant. Emily brings with her experience as a teacher and ongoing studies in Speech Pathology. She is working with Robyn Parker (Speech Pathologist) at Bowen Public School in Orange this Term and also offering individual appointments for clients under the direction and supervision of our Speech Pathology team. Emily's lovely, warm personality and professional manner has already endeared her to many of our families in the short time she has been working with us. What a team! We are all looking forward to what Term 2 will bring as Term 1 draws to a close. 2021 has certainly started with a bang!

20.01.2022 Home Practice. Let's be honest. No parent is delighted to have to complete home practice activities whilst their child is engaged in speech pathology. It doesn't have to be a chore though and can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. We use BJ Fogg's suggestions from his Tiny Habits programme to help parents incorporate practice into family life. A few tips that we have found useful include: 1. Aim for a small amount of practice. Something that you think is r...eally, really achievable 2. Visualise this practice happening either before or immediately after something you do every day e.g. packing lunch boxes, finishing afternoon tea, getting children out of the bath 3. Give it a try for a week and remember to pat yourself on the back every time that you do your new 'tiny habit' . Before you know it, speech practice will be part of your routine and you will see your child making awesome gains. If you are really interested in this concept, Tiny Steps offers a 5 day free programme for anyone interested. I have tried this myself and found it really worthwhile. We all have opportunities to make tiny changes to improve our lives....why not apply this concept to your home practice!? Karen https://tinyhabits.com/

16.01.2022 These 'Words of the Week' just keep flowing! This week in Cowra our word is "Impossible". Help your child to listen out for this word in our chosen book and discuss the meaning of this word as well as other interesting words you find as you share the story together.

16.01.2022 We are having some fun this week at Learn2Communicate. Christmas craft is a great activity for talking and listening. Love these simple ideas that even I can do! (Karen)

16.01.2022 Some tips from Robyn for Story Sharing times with your child: Do you tire of reading the same book over and over to your child? Repeated reading of the same book has been shown to have many benefits for a child’s speech and language development. Children become familiar with the vocabulary, the sounds of the words, the grammar or the structure of the sentences as well as developing an understanding of the story. Robyn One of my favourite books is The Pear in the Pear Tree... by Pamela Allen. This story has a real problem to solve and I love exploring with children the possible solutions that aren’t in the story. This story has a rich vocabulary e.g. fastened, steady, struggling, hurtling. These words can be easily used and reinforced in home routines. Finally the way the story finishes brings out the concept of sharing. Why did John and Jane have to have one bite each? Why was that fair?

15.01.2022 We are all feeling very fortunate here at L2C this week. We have so much gratitude felt towards our amazing families and their precious children for turning up and putting in 100% right up until the last week of therapy in 2020. Thank you for the lovely kind words spoken to each of us here over the past week or so. We are all completely overwhelmed and feel honoured to be entrusted with helping your children become effective communicators xx

11.01.2022 New on the EBLI Blog! "The most important questions to ask yourself when teaching or supporting a reader or writer, especially if they are not highly proficient... in these areas, are these: Why am I doing what I’m doing? Is what I’m doing resulting in increased proficiency in reading, spelling, and writing for my student(s) or child(ren)?" Read More: https://eblireads.com/the-foundation-that-leads-to-great-r/

10.01.2022 We have done lots of work this week working through identifying emotions using tone of voice and facial expression clues, labelling these emotions with words and then finding ways to cope with the 'big' emotions so that we can maintain positive interactions and relationships with others. Some lovely freely accessible resources available here for parents and teachers. https://www.ideas.org.au//activities-to-help-children-with
