23.01.2022 "Hands-on approaches such as gardening and cooking programs may encourage greater vegetable consumption and may have a larger effect compared to nutrition education. Providing children with free, accessible fruits and vegetables have been experimentally shown to positively affect long-term eating behaviour. " Experiences appear to have a positive effect on food choices, more so than trying to force the positive experience through controlled strategies by parents, cares, publ...ic health authorities and schools. . Deep down I think most of us know this for ourselves. We don't need to know about every nutrient in every food item. Our body will tell us if we are listening. . I certainly couldn't think of anything more deleterious to a positive food experience than a child who could analyse their lunch box every day. Imagine if a child were required to analyse their lunch box before going out to play (exception to those with Diabetes Type 1 and severe allergies, where it is life threatening) ; 'Mrs Collins - I've had approximately 15gm of protein, 40 gm of carbohydrate and some vitamin c gummies - I think they're around 500 mcg of vitamin C'. No fun. . Whole foods were made with synergy in mind. Nutrients in perfect balance to work within the body. Despite nutrient depletion in soils and environmental impacts - that's another story. Our bodies were designed to win and use nutrients as they were intended, from whole foods. . Nutritionists are experts in the analysis. The reality and real-life application for most people and especially young children is a whole food balanced diet. The exception are those children who may require specific therapeutic doses of nutrients to correct a biochemical imbalance and be able to function throughout a normal day. . When we share positive hands on experiences using whole foods, it appears children are more likely to include them in their own food choices. . Now that would be a win in my books. Independence and a life long skill of nourishing themselves. 20.01.2022 Real life stories. . This is courage, pride and vulnerability in action. This is a real story of activism in the early 1970's. . Learning through story. ... . Stories told to me by my uncles, aunties and family around a camp fire, the kitchen table and during family get togethers, were always memorable. . Today I am blessed with an extended family. The Collins crew. They also like to tell their fair share of stories and banter. . My father in law shared this image recently. I had seen some before and asked questions. I don't remember much of the detail. I do remember being inspired. . My father in law David Collins stands on the left and his brother Les in the foreground. They were marching in the streets of Brisbane for some of the same reasons people are marching today. . The stories I've been privileged to hear are memories of Cherbourg, where Dave grew up. The rules and regulations and the usual banter and stories that many brothers and sisters share of growing up in a country town. . The difference was that they identified as Indigenous Australians. . Nan, Dave's mum who he has been to visit this week in Cherbourg, was a part of the stolen generation. . I was taught respect from my parents. I knew to observe and listen when in new environments. I've travelled and lived in different cultures. . I am curious and was likely too ambitious in wanting to know all about a part of my country's history I knew I didn't know. I was keen. My husband taught me to listen. Now I hear and ask with a little more awareness. . I'm still learning. . I asked Dave if the activism work 'felt different' in the present time. He nodded and said ' Yes! It does'. There is more support and companies on board. . Always learning. . Although there's more support, racism still exists. That's why we continue to bring attention to it. . People aren't born racist, they are taught it from their peers. . When the truth gets taught in schools, maybe the world will change. . Thank you Dave for the permission to share this. . For more learning check out @rationshedmuseum See more

16.01.2022 How do our children function? . When developing healthy brains and nervous systems, we need to make sure our children have access to the building blocks - by way of foods. . Functional foods are foods are those that not only provide a structural support for our cells, they also perform functions necessary to think, jump, hop, process and self-regulate.... . Nutrients such as fats, minerals and antioxidants help maintain a healthy brain function, cognition and transmission. These foods and nutrients also help to ensure healthy communication pathways within the nervous system. These foods can aid in relaxation and improving sleep quality. Docosahexaenoic acid (from fish oil): Small white fish, salmon, grass fed meat. Protein foods (lamb, beef, eggs, chicken) Foods containing magnesium (green leafy vegetables, whole grains, almonds, cocoa, parsnips, kelp, seeds) Foods containing calcium (sesame seeds, tahini, almonds, broccoli, egg yolk, buckwheat, dairy) Green tea Berries Garlic, onion, turmeric, ginger Herbs: brahmi, lemongrass, Valerian ** Always seek advice from a qualified nutritionist or naturopath before giving herbs and specific doses of nutritents. Have you noticed any changes in your child's behaviour with different foods?

14.01.2022 Nutrition. . Food contains nutrients which are building blocks (literally) and fuel for our bodies to function. . Nutrients build our bodies.... . Nutrients fuel our cells for different jobs (i.e specific nutrients such as zinc and vitamin C fuel white blood cells to aid in their function - such as fighting viruses). . Nutrients protect our cells from damage. . Nutrients are still being studied for their synergy and how they work together to run our amazing bodies. . Nutrients are the foundation. . Hence, when we think about all that we do, the nutrients we eat, absorb and use are paramount to our function. . It is important to understand that it is challenging in our world to choose nutrients over anti- nutrients and food like substances. It's not our fault, a diet culture and processed foods are in abundance. . I've heard there is more money spent on understanding the brain to market and sell to you than there is in the prevention of brain diseases. . The choice can be challenging, however the choice is ours to make. . Food either nourishes and restores or depletes your body. . That's why when it comes to Nutrition & Learning we want to set the healthy habits of mind begin from a young age. . To nourish is to think and connect. To grow a healthy brain and body awareness. . Even placing a fruit or healthy snack bowl on your bench begins a healthy habit and healthy choice. . There begins a flow of nourishing mind, body and spirit when we are truly valuing the trillions of cells which make up our 'whole' selves. . Nourish well today. Start small. @ Melbourne, Victoria, Australia See more

13.01.2022 We are literally influencing children everyday on how to grow, change, adapt and eat well. . We are the plumbers, electricians, carpenters and interior designers of our bodies. . We are empowering children to make healthy choices.... . Genetics plays a role. . The greatest role is the environment we live in. . Even a fruit bowl on the bench filled with fresh fruit is a starting point. Seeing seeds of habits. Growing healthy cells. . What are your smallest tips and tricks that might help someone make a change and empower their children? . . . . . . #learningthroughplay #learningisfun #learningathome #literacymatters #literacycoach #earlyliteracy #flashcardsforkids #health #healthy #healthyeating #healthyfood #healthandwellness #healthcoach #sunshinecoastbusiness #sunshinecoast #sunshinecoastfoodie #sunshinecoastmums #sunshinecoastkids #sunshinecoastmumsandbubs #brisbanemum #brisbanemums #brisbanemumsandbubs #goldcoastmums #goldcoastkids #nutritionist #nutritioncoach #nutritiontips #homeschool #holisticlearning See more

07.01.2022 Keeping it simple. . I just didn't feel like eggs. . It happens. Our usual changes. My usual is very different to my usual as a teenager and early 20's.... . I need my protein to function well. I aim for around 15-20gm per meal. . I could not resist the fresh organic oranges from @freshboxdelivery and home grown passionfruit, so delicious and full of vitamin C, bioflavonoids and more! . Organic rye, organic cottage cheese, tomatoes and a few spinach leaves for green. . I didn't have quite enough protein. I may have had around 8-10gm from the cheese. . I added a few sprinkled seeds to increase the protein content. . I don't overthink it. I look for colour, texture and protein. Spinach was a side as I love the green colour - not so much the raw texture. . Sometimes, I just love a cup of tea and a piece of toast with peanut butter. The difference is, over time I have swapped out low quality or low nutrient dense products for high quality ones. Organic tea, unhomogenised milk, pure peanut butter (no additives, salt etc), organic nut and seed bread - so when I combine with my peanut butter it is a full protein profile. One I cannot make in my body. . I wonder what you had for breakfast today? See more

07.01.2022 We take fun seriously. . Well, not really. We like to have fun and our LH Healthy Alphabet Cards reflect this. . We also set high expectations to give you our best. We do this because this is what we want for you and your child.... . We thought about just putting out a basic few stock pictures with letters on them, write a few sentences and sell a high volume of alphabet cards at a cheap price. We didn't want this. . We wanted something you would feel good using and your child would like too and something we were proud of. A learning product which was versatile. . We went through the process. Find a photographer and ask them to collaborate. Think through the literacy - have we used Oxford 400 words and a combination of sentences for early and emerging readers. Is it enough to start a story discussion? Have we made it as accessible as possible for all learners to engage with ? This is when we hunted for a dyslexia font.... . The process was messy, fun, frustrating and required lots of questions on how the end product would look. . Ultimately it had to demonstrate quality and care. Care for nutrition. Care for learning. Care for connection. . To us it is more than a product. It is a tool to connect people. Parents to their children. Children to children. Practitioners to their clients. . Our goal is to connect a love of nutrition, wellbeing, positive psychology and food as medicine to learning - in a way that benefits us all. . We hope you know we care. . 03.01.2022 Story - what is it? . Whatever you can imagine - that is the story. Fly, play, squash, stomp and zoom. . To help a child make sense of the world around them and engage in something new - there is nothing quite like a good story told with passion and commitment.... . I've begun to improve my story telling to children - embellishing my dorkiness, play and imagination. . Apparently we are hardwired to respond positively to a good story. @auspost had a lovely link to some easy to read tips on Storytelling https://auspost.com.au///kids/5-storytelling-tips-for-kids See more

02.01.2022 I was curious about the smell of tomatoes at Age 5. . I was curious about how to bake a cake at Age 9. . I was curious as to why apples only had a small amount of protein at Age 11.... . I was curious why certain foods gave me energy and how this happened as an adult. . I am currently curious about why certain nutrients and biochemical pathways are broken down and used or not used in children's brains, especially those given a label. . . What are you curious about today? .
