25.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS # 8 Reading Aloud The benefits of reading with kids is well documented. Its so good for them. What I have not considered until writing these connection tips is how beneficial it is for me too. Reading to your children is an enormously rewarding thing to do and, quite possibly one of the very few quiet times we get together in a whole day. When you think about it like that, the 157th re-telling of Where is the Green Sheep? mightnt feel l...ike such a punishment. I read most nights with all my kids, sometimes individually, sometimes all together, and it is one of the best things they love to do with me, and I with them. Speaking of reading I'm creating an ebook about these connections ideas that I will release after the last idea. Can't wait and hope you can't either! Oh and a quick note, research tells us that when Dad reads 1 book with their child it means as much as 5 books read by Mum... So Dad's keep that in mind if you are trying to connect with your child. 25.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #1 After-dinner walks Once a week, taking it in turns. You dont need to be overzealous here either, and its really good to be able to teach delayed gratification as well as having something super special to look forward to, plus if you really think about it, its not like this is the only time you will spend with your child. OK so as a parent you also need to remember that being perfect is not the aim of this thing called parenting, so yo...u may miss some weeks. Even if its just for 15 minutes, this time is so special because its not at home, and that is what makes this time so much more special. Its an awesome way to strengthen your parent child relationship by chatting and strolling along or being silent and comfortable in each others company. Keep in mind its not even important what you talk about, some nights you might talk about everything and other nights you might talk about nothing, and maybe some nights you won't be able to get a word in, because the more you practice, the more at ease you will become with each other and that is what this is really about, building a secure parent child relationship. 22.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #5 Cups of tea I have long enjoyed my cuppa on my bedroom balcony, overlooking the trees and ocean. So, a few years ago, I started giving my kids chamomile tea in a tea cup so they could join me in my ritual. They respect that this is quiet time and before long we are taking the moment to share what we would like to accomplish. At around the age of 3 they started to make goals for the day, not a bad outcome from a little quiet time tea ritual. Now my twins are 7 and my youngest 5 we do not do it every day, but they remember like a true and time-tested habit that when they sit and have tea with me this is what happens, its not forced, its very natural and it is most certainly one of my favorite connection times.
21.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #12 Favorite things Each night at bed time I ask each child what their favorite thing was today. Its been the same, year after year, since the kids could first talk, and now if I try to leave without asking, I get yelled at, FAVOURITE THINGS MUM!. Its a unique way to find out about their day and, most importantly, teaching them to be grateful and optimistic (for the times when they talk about the worst thing today). This has been the by far the most successful action to connect with my kids. I hope this works for you and its never too late to start a good habit. So, GO FOR IT!
21.01.2022 12 Ideas to CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS. I'm going to post one every day. I love helping parents connect with their kids. Sometimes we think our kids are looking for attention, and there is fine fine line between the two. This is where 'Circle of Security Parenting' helps you to identify the two, and guides you to build a secure relationship with your child. Enquire now about Term 3 Circle Of Security Parenting by clicking the link. http://www.learningcircuits.com.au/circle-of-security-paren
21.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #9 Winks and In-Jokes By far my most precious moments with my kids have all centered on sharing a joke that only we get. The kids all love it when I wink at them, or pull a silly face behind their Dads back, or tell them a joke about something weve experienced. They like to feel like they are in on the joke and it connects us together through a shared positive experience.

18.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #6 What I love about Well my kids bicker theyre not the only ones right? Well recently Ive set up on the way to school habit. Each of us say what we love about each other and ourselves, and at the end we say thank you and talk about what stood out to you about what everyone said about you. For example, Max will say, Ben what I love about you is that you include me when you see I am on my own and feeling a bit sad, like I was yest...erday. Then at the end Ben will say, thank you everyone for appreciating me. These are just two basic examples, they dont need to be in depth statements, and its ok if they get repeated too, its just nice to try to think about what your family does for you and to appreciate that, and also to recognize the value of everyone in your family. We do it for each family member, including Dad and our dog Cookie, even though they are not in the car with us. What I have found is that as time goes on the kids have become far more aware of what their siblings, Mum and Dad do for them and how much we all appreciate each other. So we all therefore become more aware and grateful. Life is like a camera, keep the important things in focus. See more
17.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #2 Baking Helping me bake is a highlight for my kids (I find it very difficult, definitely a lesson in patience and deep breathing, but I would never, ever let them know this). I do look forward to helping them explore the kitchen each week though, their happiness as they scoop, pour and stir, and that is enough for me to keep going, year after year.

12.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #3 Feeding the pets Another one that the kids are now responsible for, but a quality, everyday moment when they were small. Giving each child a little job to do made them proud and Im sure helped develop their compassionate natures as they took responsibility for their pets.
12.01.2022 Hi Everyone, after a couple of sessions of Circle of Security Parenting, and some excellent input (thank you Term 2 COS Parents for suggesting that I do this). Some of us need help with things we can do to connect with our kids (let's say 5+). So I'm going to give you some ideas... Here is idea No. 1 After-dinner walks.... Once a week, taking it in turns. We dont need to be overzealous here either, and its really good to be able to teach delayed gratification as well as having something super special to look forward to, plus if you really think about it, its not like this is the only time you will spend with your child/ren. OK so as a parent you also need to remember that being perfect is not the aim of this thing called parenting, so there are some weeks we dont go, but we do try to head out each week, even if its just for 15 minutes. This time is so special because its not at home, and that is what makes this time so much more special. Its an awesome way to strengthen the parent child relationship by chatting and strolling along. Keep in mind its not even important what you talk about, some nights you might talk about everything and other nights you might talk about nothing, and maybe some nights you won't be able to get a word in, because the more you practice, the more at ease you will become with each other and that is what this is really about - building a secure parent child realionship. So try this idea on for size and let me know how you go... Keep your eyes out for the next idea!

09.01.2022 This is such a super interesting read, even though it is 2 years old now... A very valuable article, well worth reading on the research on ADHD drugs. I am very fortunate to be a provider of a DRUG FREE and non invasive program called The Listening Program that helps kids with attention, behavioural and learning problems.

05.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #4 Bath time Of course, this is only for those with younger ones that still require assistance at bath time. The temptation to rush the bath is always strong during witching hour but, a bath washes away a lot more than just dirt. Taking time to softly scoop water over the childrens backs and encouraging them to gently swirl the water, is meditative and calming. I find that I can (as they get a bit older) to sit and have a lovely chat with them too.
05.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS Before I start with the next idea to connect with your kids, I would like to highlight that i have missed a day... Yes, I have missed a day, and that is ok. I'm not perfect and neither is parenting! So here we go with Idea Number 7. #7 Card games My kids all love a game of cards, which is no surprise as they have been playing various card games all their lives. We started with simple games like Snap and worked our way up to Rummy and others, oh and UNO is a definite fav!. A quick card game while the dinner cooks is also one of my favorite things to do because the laughter and fun is uncontained and beautiful.
05.01.2022 Just a little something to help you connect with your kids (really anyone in the family actually...) LISTEN WHEN I TELL YOU STUFF More than anything, kids want their parents to listen to them. How theyre feeling, what theyre thinking, and perhaps hardest of all for busy parents who have absolutely no interest whatsoever in Barbies or Minecraft. I know you know what Im talking about when I say that throwing in an occasional wow sounds interesting wont cut it. We cant ...feign interest and we cant half-listen either. We need to ask questions, make suggestions and even throw in a fact or two of our own to really win our kids over. So get your google on and find a fact about something your kids love then watch their face as you instigate a conversation about what they love, and see what happens when they see you are actually listening to and actively showing an interest in something they love... tell me how you go! 01.01.2022 12 IDEAS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR KIDS #10 Join in their play. I have never especially liked playing with my kids on the floor. Im not one of those Mums who is down on the floor with the train set. Making time to spontaneously join in my childrens play has been a way to delight them for their entire existence. Perhaps it only works because they dont expect me to be on the floor with them? But this is truly one of the best ways to show your children that you love them for them, not what they can and cannot do.
