24.01.2022 The kids have been busy using quadrats to do a baseline plant survey so we can monitor the effect of the native plant revegetation project we will be doing. They had a great time learning about different native plants and why they need to be protected. We our so proud that our kids are so passionate about biodiversity at co-op! #learningcooperative #hurstbridgelearningcoop #melbourneschools #coopeducation #magicofbush #2020school #natureeducation #alternativelearning #independentschool #smallschools #primaryschool #primaryeducation #biodiversity #soilhealth #term4 #primaryeducation #educationoutdoors @DELWPVictoria @landcareaustralia #JuniorLandcare

18.01.2022 This year, we had a mini Diwali celebration at co-op. As a parent at co-op, you bring in your culture and your traditions to share, which is the best part. We decorated a massive rangoli using flowers and coloured rice/corn, followed by some firework drawing with chalk and ending the day with some henna drawing by the biggies. To be able to celebrate this with such a beautiful community is such a blessing, in such an unusual year. HAPPY DIWALI TO EVERYONE CELEBRATING... #learningcooperative #hurstbridgelearningcoop #melbourneschools #coopeducation #magicofbush #2020school #natureeducation #alternativelearning #independentschool #smallschools #primaryschool #primaryeducation #diwali2020 #diwaliinaustralia #celebrations #culture #diwali See more

15.01.2022 Today we have a beautiful description of the Galah written and drawn by one of Year 2 students. 14.01.2022 #meetourteachers Meet our coordinator, and as we fondly call her, Liz. She has come a long way since the 80s when she was teaching English to adults in Italy. Since returning to Australia, she taught English and literacy to adult refugees for 25 years. She has been a vital person in our co-op community since 2000, when she joined as a parent. She started off teaching part time Italian and music and dabbled in other primary schools including both the public-school system an...d Montessori. She officially became our co-ordinator in 2014. Being an avid musician, she shared around her talents in abundance. Thanks to her, we have an amazing camps program for all our kids and families at co-op. Her love of camping has made her appreciate and share her love and knowledge of Victoria’s national parks and their flora and fauna. She believes education should include a broad range of ideas, situation and people. In her view, children should be self-contained, resilient, comfortable in their skin and have a primary school experience that they can look back with fondness. She encourages spending time in the bush, playing and learning social and physical skills and most importantly develop an appreciation of nature and history of the land. She emphasizes the fact that the co-op gives the kids an opportunity learn at their own speed, follow their own interests and passions and get inspired from other members to explore new areas. #learningcooperative #hurstbridgelearningcoop #melbourneschools #coopeducation #magicofbush #2020school #natureeducation #alternativelearning #independentschool #smallschools #primaryschool #primaryeducation

09.01.2022 As part of our Biodiversity theme this term, we hosted two fabulous environmental campaigners who spoke with the children about how litter can make its way into the ocean ecosystem, the devastating effect this has on marine life and also what we can all do to help minimise the problem. Kids & parents were very inspired & are now thinking of a beach or local river clean-up excursion early next year! Check out the photos of some pretty and fun art pieces made from unwanted plastics and other materials... the fish sculptures would make great theatre props!!

08.01.2022 What better way could we start our term, other than soiling our undies. The co-op kids are taking part in the 'soil your undies' project. It is a great way to involve the kids and start having a conversation about soil health We will keep you guys updated on this experience ... #soilhealth #term4 #primaryeducation #educationoutdoors #soilmyundies #biodiversity #soilscience #soilyourundies #soilyourundieschallenge #worldcottonday #unediscovery #cottoninfo #unesmartfarm #education #learningcooperative #hurstbridgelearningcoop #melbourneschools #coopeducation #magicofbush #2020school #natureeducation #alternativelearning #independentschool #smallschools #primaryschool #primaryeducation See more

05.01.2022 Camping is a big tradition at Co-op. We run a bush camp program that starts with sleepovers at school for littlies and progresses to Touring Camp in term 4 for Years 5 and 6! The kids plan a week long camp themselves- the itinerary, meals, locations etc. Our aims with the camps are to have fun, connect with nature, deepen friendships and develop independence and resilience. They normally go to beautiful spots around Victoria including Wilsons Prom, Bear Gully, Mt Buffalo...t...hey are often low facility bush camps. The camp might be a themed 'writing camp' where they go and write in the bush. Other typical activities.. lots of nature play, exploring, swimming, ephemeral nature art, playing music and singing round the fire, bird watching and learning about native flora, fauna and geology.. They are often the highlight of a child's experience at Co-op. Usually led by Liz who has many years of experience of leading bush camps. Our "Biggies" left for camp this morning, and we are so grateful, we were able to keep this tradition going this year. They will have a lot to say when they are back :) #learningcooperative #hurstbridgelearningcoop #melbourneschools #coopeducation #magicofbush #2020school #natureeducation #alternativelearning #independentschool #smallschools #primaryschool #primaryeducation #parksvictoria #bushcampprogram #writingcamp #bushcamps #cooptraditions

05.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what comes out of teachers' pockets at the end of the school day? No? Well, neither did I, until one our teachers, Amy, pulled out all these things from there - a fake spider, 2 feathers, some notes from students and a teeny tiny leaf that is not seen in this picture. ... 03.01.2022 We harvested some lovely Carrots and reused the space for planting some wonderful beetroot seedlings. Our broad beans are next to be harvested and we should have some wonderful strawberries before term ends. Teaching and guiding the kids to grow their own food is an extremely loved project here at the co-op. 03.01.2022 Our lovely Chicken and Rooster are back to co-op grounds and to re-introduce caring for them, we had a fun filled "Chicken week." One of the lovely activities we did, was drawing our own chicken which will now be hidden all over the property. Each chicken had a profile and some important personality traits. 01.01.2022 If you go down in the woods today You're sure of a big surprise If you go down in the woods today You'd better go in disguise! ... Tradition holds that when our biggies escape to their annual touring camp ... our Littles and middles look forward to their very special Teddy Bear’s Picnic (usually by our picturesque dam site on the property). Last week at our Teddy Bear Picnic, we made Teddy sleds for down the slide action and colourful teddy houses too! We wrote teddy profiles, shared a picnic and handed out awards for each teddy... this awards activity, had the middles viewing each teddy as an individual and picking a few positive and unique attributes for each one (personality too!)... this is a wonderful skill to practice; to immediately look for the positives in everyone around us! It was a wonderful day!
