25.01.2022 Heres Emina McLeans latest blog on Spelling. Remember that learning to read and learning to spell are two sides of the same coin.

25.01.2022 New blog post from Emina McLean: Where do you stand?

24.01.2022 Three sounds of the suffix -ed When phonics needs a helping hand from morphology! We are always telling our students to listen to the sounds in words as they sp...ell them. Then they diligently listen to the sounds and spell jumpt and landid! At this point we need to reach out to morphology. In order to help our students with their spelling (this is a spelling issue not a reading issue), we need to teach the following: 1. The suffix -ed has in important job to do: It is a word-ending that makes sure that everyone understands that the action in the sentence happened in the past. If the -ed wasnt there, we wouldnt know this. 2. The suffix -ed is pronounced in three different ways: /t/, /d/ and /id/. This is because it is difficult to say the sound /d/ after some consonant sounds. Here is an info-graphic to help explain this to kids.

10.01.2022 One spelling - different sounds People who say that the English Phonic Code has too many irregular spellings so it can't be taught with systematic phonics hav...en't realised that we teach kids that a spelling can represent more than one sound explicitly. They will give an example: how can the reader know the word 'wind' is the 'wind' that blows or to 'wind' up a clock? When a reader encounters a word that can be sounded out in more than one way, the context of the sentence will help the reader choose the correct sound. But in order to make that choice, the reader will need to know what options there are. They need to know that the letter can spell the sounds /i/ and /ie/. When we teach kids letter/sound correspondences, we help them narrow down the options. Otherwise, reading the word can be random guessing activity. Which route is the most direct to developing reading fluency? Watch this space for our FREE graphics which will soon be on our website. #readingfluency #phonics #voweldigraphs #vowelteams

02.01.2022 Teaching using explicit and systematic instruction is harmful to none but vital for some. Dr de Bruin said it was possible a case could be made that when schools did not ensure students basic rights were met such as facilitating access and participation in a high-quality education that it constituted neglect. This is being examined by the disability royal commission, she said.
