24.01.2022 When asked, most people have heard of dyslexia and associate it with an inability to spell and read. In fact, dyslexia has a range of common challenges and strengths. The strengths of dyslexia are often ignored entirely and left... unrecognised. For instance, did you know that one in three American entrepreneurs have dyslexia? Entrepreneurs like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs and Charles Schwab were all dyslexic. We need to help children to overcome their challenges and nurture their dyslexic strengths! . . . . . . .#structuredliteracy #dyslexiaadvocate #dyslexiapower #dyslexiaawarenessmonth #dyslexiaeducation #dyslexicstrengths See more

22.01.2022 These skills are crucial for a child to become an effective reader + speller! Speed and accuracy in these skills needs to be achieved for these 3 skills to become automatic. Once a child is automatic in these skills, the child can then concentrate solely on understanding and extracting information from the text they are reading. Fluent readers achieve automatic decoding for successful reading and spelling! ... . . . . . . . . . . . . #dyslexia #saydyslexia #reading #literacy #readingisfundamental #iteachreading #learningdifferences #learningdifference #geelongkids #geelongsmallbusiness #learningdisability #learningdisabilities #scienceofreading #literacymatters #literacycoach #readinginstruction #dyslexiatherapy #decoding #readingcommunity #readingisfun #ilovereading #structuredliteracy #phonics #dyslexiaadvocate #dyslexiapower #dyslexiaeducation #phonicsfun #phonicsactivities #soundswrite See more

06.01.2022 Older students with literacy difficulties The fourth grade slump Parents will say We often wondered if Amy's reading progress was OK, but we were assured when we enquired each year that she was doing fine. Now this year’s report states that she’s way behind. How can this be?... For many at-risk children, progress in reading comes to an abrupt halt around Year 3 or Year 4 when a number of unfamiliar words are rapidly introduced. The number of words a child must cope with in Year 2 is estimated to be around three and four hundred. In years 3 and 4 this is between three and four thousand. Then, the average fifth grade student encounters about ten thousand new words. This is an 'orthographic avalanche' Hempenstall (2017) that overwhelms students without adequate decoding skills. Strategies that rely on memory for the shapes of words and picture and context clues become unproductive. Too often, students have not developed a decoding strategy for these novel words. Do you have experience with the fourth grade slump? . . . . . . . . . . . #dyslexia #saydyslexia #reading #literacy See more
