18.01.2022 An excellent read - using fingers to count in Maths is extremely important and an excellent way to develop visual learning for all children (the research says it all). We love and embrace this type of learning at Learning is Unique. https://www.theatlantic.com//why-kids-should-use-t/478053/
14.01.2022 The last few weeks have been nothing like we have experienced before, and I know everyone is eager to have some certainty for the coming few months and beyond. ...Today, I can provide details for parents and teachers with regards to the start of Term 2 at WA public schools. The medical advice regarding schools remains clear the risks of COVID-19 transmission at schools is very low. So we have come up with an approach that’s consistent with the best health advice at hand for WA. Term Two will start back on Wednesday April 29, the Wednesday after the ANZAC Day long weekend. WA public schools will then be open for all parents and carers who choose to send their children. But for anyone who does not want their children to attend school in person, they can continue learning from home. However, Year 11 and 12 students are strongly encouraged to attend in person given the critical stage they are at in their schooling. For those learning from home, education packages and resources will be provided, as well as online resources where possible. This soft opening is about transitioning students back into our classrooms in a responsible manner, to receive the best education, without risking the health of students, staff or parents. Where schools can provide online support and teaching for students at home, this will be implemented. For those students learning from home, contact by the school will be made each week by phone and/or online and feedback given on work package completion. Parents and carers of children and young people with complex medical needs are encouraged to seek medical advice regarding attendance at school. With regard to safety, schools will implement the following: alternative arrangements as required for vulnerable employees; increased cleaning throughout the day, including high touch surfaces and playground equipment; parents and visitors will drop students at the gate and not enter grounds; additional hygiene measures and social distancing measures; school swimming pools will remain closed; excursions, assemblies, camps and interschool activities will not be conducted; canteens will provide take away services only. Schools can also implement staggered start, break and meal times to reduce contact and close, or practise social distancing in, common areas and staff rooms. Additionally, schools will be able to combine year groups and use alternative locations within the school boundaries to deliver classes. There will be a review of these arrangements in the lead up to week 4 and any adjustments will be made based on health advice and infection trends across the community. Schools will maintain good communication with parents providing up to date information about arrangements. If there are any localised positive COVID-19 cases in schools, the existing health protocols will apply. This includes closing and deep cleaning of the school. The school will reopen once this has occurred and quarantine and self-isolation protocols will be implemented for any close contacts identified through Health Department contact tracing. I want to thank everyone for their patience and hard work over the past few weeks - especially our educators, who have been working so hard to get us ready for term two with the flexibility we’re going to need.
07.01.2022 Students will now be able to apply for entry to UWA in 2021 based on their predicted ATAR from the end of Year 11.
06.01.2022 A little snap shot of a ‘Learning is Unique Session’... Can you believe this child had huge difficulties reading and writing even simple sentences at the start of the year?! All it takes is the correct intervention, persistence, patience and a whole lot of belief.
