25.01.2022 Adelaide Bedwetting Solutions Bedwetting is quite common in school-aged children: they can't control it, and some grow out of it. However, for some children the problem persists. The good news is that for many children the problem can be treated using a night time bell/alarm program.... Learning Keys is now offering a bedwetting treatment service for children. This confidential service follows the Guidelines from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence to ensure evidence based procedures are followed. The program offered at Learning Keys is suitable for school-aged children who experience regular bedwetting difficulties. A thorough assessment of your child's needs will be conducted, and at the end of this assessment it will be determined whether it would be appropriate to offer the bell/alarm treatment or whether a different approach might be more suitable for your child's specific needs. Both you and your child will receive support at every step along the way from a Learning Keys Psychologist. Rebates for services may be available through Medicare with a GP referral or through private health insurance.

16.01.2022 'Developmental Language Disorder' (DLD) is the new internationally agreed term that replaces specific language impairment and similar terms. Agreed terminology is the first step to increasing awareness, providing coherent information to parents, children and young people, accessing funding for research and developing the best possible services. About two children in every classroom have DLD but unlike Autism and Dyslexia few people have heard about it. 22nd September is Inter...national Day to promote DLD Developmental Language Disorder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ-s02HWLb0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbP2DakcbIk

02.01.2022 Q and A Letter reversals. As a psychologists working in the area of learning difficulties I am often asked about letter reversals. Halfway through term 1 of the year, some of you may be starting to notice that your children reverse some of their letters or numerals when writing. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about reversals. Q. When should I start worrying about letter reversals?... A. It is common for young children to reverse letters or numerals when learning to write. Writing is a complex skill and it takes a while for children to get the hand of letter formation and directionality of symbols like b,d,p,q that are essentially the same shape. It is common for children to write backwards or upside down or to reverse letters up until around 7 years. If a child is still reversing letters after this time then an assessment is warranted. Q If my child is reversing letters, does this mean he/she has dyslexia? A. Not necessarily. Some children who have dyslexia do have difficulties with forming letters that can persist after 7 years of age. However, some children who continue to reverse letters may not have dyslexia but may have visual processing concerns. An assessment can help to tease out whet the source of the difficulty might be. Q. What can I do at home to help my child with letter formation? A. First and foremost, make learning fun. If your child becomes anxious it will become more difficult for them to learn and retain information. This is where multisensory activities can help. Make letters out of different materials such as pipe cleaners, play doh, sand paper, rice/sand and then ask your child to use their finger to trace the shape while practicing the sound. Focus on one letter at a time and complete multiple repetitions. Practice daily to develop new habits and remember that just 5 minutes practice every day is better than trying a block of 35 minutes one time each week. Make sure that you are demonstrating correct letter formation when teaching your child. Finally: If you continue to be concerned about your childs writing a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment will provide information about your childs learning strengths and weaknesses and will help to work out the best strategies to help your child flourish academically.
