18.01.2022 After some years at home looking after her family, Kelly decided the time was right to explore new possibilities for herself. I worked in hospitality for five years, then I had a baby. Kelly came across the Getting Started with Computers program at Cloverdale Community Centre. This program is ideal for beginners but also includes learning how to use Microsoft Word, email and more.... Learn Local courses are great. They have given me a new direction, provided new possibilities and a new outlook on life. Kelly found the support she needed from both her teachers and her classmates. I have made new friends and Cloverdale Community Centre has given me a great confidence boost. Computer studies tutor Maree said, I teach in other settings and the beauty of Learn Local providers is that students can learn more, classes are flexible, people learn what they need to and they learn faster in a relaxed setting. I’m proud to see so many students make rapid and profound progress. We have a lot of returning students, many of whom have become my friends, which is really nice. 16.01.2022 Sammy has discovered the joy of the outdoors through a horticulture program at Learn Local provider, Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre. There are 14 of us in the Taster Course in Horticulture and we are all very proud of the work we are doing. The horticulture program at Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre incorporates a wide range of hands-on gardening activities.... We have fixed Kew Cemetery. At first, we were supervised but now we know how to propagate plants, pull weeds, put down newspaper to prevent weeds growing again and use mulch. Sammy loves the experience and teamwork involved in building and regenerating garden settings. The garden is very beautiful again. We have all grown in confidence and in skills and made new friends, and we have a lot of fun. Sammy's tutor Su said, "Im a qualified special needs teacher as well as a horticulturist. The most inspiring part of my job is seeing learners beginning to believe in themselves, believing that they can have a go at something and succeed. That success always breeds success, develops confidence and the knowledge I can do this. Im always blown away by that." Gain the skills you need to get ahead. 10.01.2022 Rebecca left high school when she was 15. "I hung out with a crowd who thought it was a waste of time and I was easily influenced by my peers." At 17 she was pregnant, alone, and at risk of being homeless.... Mallee Accommodation Support Program found Rebecca somewhere to live and referred her to Zoe Support Australia, a Learn Local provider in Mildura. Zoe Support helps young women with parenting and re-engages them in education. Rebecca did a number of classes at Zoe Support including a sewing class to make and sell items for local markets and a hospitality course. I was very excited at the idea of studying again. But I was worried that since Id been at school thered been a lot of changes. I started going to Bridging Literacy and Numeracy at Zoe Support because I needed to catch up, particularly with computers and new technology. Rebecca didnt stop there. She has since completed her Certificate IV in Community Services at TAFE and is now a first year student in a Bachelor in Human Services/Masters of Social Work program at Latrobe University. 04.01.2022 Kitti moved from Thailand to Australia in 2016. She had been a teacher for 13 years in Thailand but her qualifications were not recognised here. Kitti found out about Ballarat Neighbourhood Centres Enterprising Communities program, which includes hospitality courses that have a strong work focus. The Enterprising Communities program allowed Kitti to learn new skills, build networks, and improve her English. She went on to complete a Working in Cleaning course, and got a job ...at a local resort as a room attendant. I loved learning at BNC. I could practice my language. I got more skills for work and for myself. Unfortunately Kitti lost her job at the resort due to the impact of COVID19. So when she saw a job as a Cleaning and Safety Officer at Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre, she applied armed with glowing recommendations from her previous employer. 01.01.2022 This is so important for me because I have a passion for people. Dominic cares about people. He previously worked in customer care before returning to study at Laverton Community Education Centre. I am very interested in helping older people become independent.... Dominic wants a career change and, given his background, aged care would be an ideal fit for him. His course at Laverton Community Education Centre includes practical sessions which have given him some real insight into what aged care roles involve. I can see how I can implement what I am learning into that field. There are some important skills and attributes that aged care workers need. Most important is a caring attitude but its also important be able to communicate well, to have a positive outlook and lots and lots of patience. Dominic already ticks a lot of these boxes and with support from Laverton Community Education Centre, he will fulfil his dream of a new career. One day we will be old and we need to know what we need to do to help people grow old gracefully. Gain the skills you need to get ahead.
