22.01.2022 In November 2016 I sent out a post about an enamelled thimble that had a strange gadget on the top, asking for help in identifying it. I'd been sent the photos from a fellow thimble collector. In the TCI Bulletin which arrived today - there is the answer in an artilce by William Isbister. That patented thimble from 1926 is a cigarette holder!! that's the beauty of sahring information isn't it? Love Sue

17.01.2022 It's such a lovely feeling to have completed another thimble topic to share my passion. I think this is the first of my topics to feature wooden thimbles and certainly it's my first Scottish thimble maker. Let me introduce Innes Mitchell who made beautiful wooden thimbles in the mid-1980s, in the Scottish Highlands. I hope you enjoy seeing these unique thimbles. If you have one in your collection that isn't featured in this latest Learn More About...Thimbles topic, please share. Love Sue visit www.thimbleselect.com

17.01.2022 Dear fellow thimble collectors I would like to share the news that I have created two new thimble topics to round out the year. The first deals with commemorative thimbles made for the British royals - the missing period between my two other 'Royals' topics of Queen Victoria and British Royalty on thimbles (from 1952). This new topic may be found with the British Royalty of thimbles and it's called unsurprisingly, British Royalty on thimbles 1902-1937. There weren't many thim...bles made during the period, which covered four monarchs. https://www.thimbleselect.com/learn The last topic is for a modern collectables thimble maker whose name should be familiar to you if you collected thimbles in the 1980s or '90s: Jenny Blair Designs. Hers are the gorgeous handblown frosted thimbles with the electroplated silver designs ... Read more under my Miscellany of thimbles section https://www.thimbleselect.com/miscellany--of-thimbles if you can add something new with either topic, please contact me. Till 2021, stay safe and celebrate in the spirit of Christmas. x sue See more

16.01.2022 There is a new topic online today on Peter Swingler and his handpainted enamelled silver thimbles. He died in 2015, so there will be no more treasures created. For further information and around 300 views of his thimbles visit the Learn More About thimbles topics today. The photos show the last of the Presidents of America set and the last monarch for Kings & Queens of England that Peter would paint. I am looking forward to being deluged with more photos and information please. Love Sue www.thimbleselect.com/miscellany--of-thimbles

16.01.2022 Good morning Thimblers The group of thimbles I have created a new Learn More About topic for this morning is not new to you. It becomes the fourth one I have shared on enamel thimbles. This time it's turn of Cornish Enamels thimbles. They only had a very brief thimble creative period between 1995-1997. Do you have any thimbles from earlier or later? I'm curious to know. Their handpainted enamelled thimbles are joyously colourful - often showing scenes from outer space. The ...view shared is one of their Aurora Borealis creations. Enjoy this niche collection of special thimbles If you have anything to share, please get in touch love Sue https://www.thimbleselect.com/miscellany--of-thimbles

15.01.2022 I have added another lovely batch of thimbles for you to buy. Thimbleselect has a new ordering system, which I hope will makes things easier for you. love Sue

13.01.2022 I have just come across this beautiful thimble's photos. I have never seen this design or such a beautifully handpainted Waratah. It's on a sterling silver and enamel thimble with a stone top. The thimble box is one from Flavelle Brothers of Sydney and London. They operated as such between 1888 and 1921. This may offer up a clue? I gathered this thimble was from the estate of Charles (Ruthven) Blackburn (1913-2016). I can make out the lettering Sterling silver and the size no. Has anyone ever seen a thimble like this? I'd love to know who made it - where - and when. x sue

12.01.2022 I have been asked to sell a few Australian thimbles with the proceeds going to charity. If you love Australian thimbles visit www.thimbleselect.com Love Sue

12.01.2022 Pewter thimble manufacture reached its heydey in the 1980s. Pewter thimbles weren't often marked. I have now created a new thimble topic of Pewter thimble makers from around the world with their marks. I can't believe that there are over 90 makers identified. I need your help please to look at your own collection so that we can add new makers. This example is an Australian-made pewter thimble from Riccardo. Enjoy... love Sue www.thimbleselect.com/learn

12.01.2022 It's going to be a very cold start on Saturday 10th June, when the Collectables Fair opens at the Ipswich Showgrounds at 8am. Rug up and come and see the hundreds of stalls crammed with collectables. Thimbleselect will be selling thimbles and I look forward to seeing you when you brave the cold - the fair closes by 2pm. Love Sue

11.01.2022 Today Thimbleselect turns 30! On 22 May 1987 we registered my mail order thimble business in Benoni South Africa. 18 months later we moved to live in Perth - bringing the business with me made it so much easier to make new friends. 1993 saw us relocate to live in Brisbane. In 1998 we put Thimbleselect online after the publication of "Thimbles of Australia". In 2002 we began the very successful "Learn More About...Thimbles" topics and today there are over 60 topics for you to learn from and the share some of your treasures. Thank you one and all for all you have done in supporting Thimbleselect up to and including our 30th anniversary. The first ten orders placed in this anniversary week will receive free postage. Love Sue - and Christie

11.01.2022 I have been able to use this time of isolation to do some long overdue work on a new Learn More About...Thimbles topic. This time it's back to my favourite Charles Horner. This new topic launched today looks at the thimbles made by Charles Horner in Chester - the only thing is they don't have the CH marks. Why? Read the new topic under the Miscellany tab "Charles Horner thimbles with other sponsor's marks" ... these thimbles look so alike but love sue https://www.thimbleselect.com/miscellany--of-thimbles

11.01.2022 Those of you collect thimbles, do you have the most iconic thimble in your collection? A Dorcas thimble? If not, you may have an earlier unmarked Dorcas thimble also by Charles Horner. These are only marked PAT. with the size number alongside. They are often missed as being Dorcas thimbles. I am attempting to discover how many sizes Horner was offering from 1884 - in each of the Dorcas designs, as well of those with engraved bands. Look at his interesting designs and how he m...arketed his thimbles https://www.thimbleselect.com/miscellany--of-thimbles and look for my latest topic: Charles Horner’s early Dorcas PAT. thimbles. love Sue

09.01.2022 I have just received these photos and I am really stumped. Have you seen a thimble like this before? These are the current relevant details - enamel over sterling silver - with a hollow 'gadget' on the apex - it is not cyclindrical - thimble height 1.41 ins (3.58 cm) which is quite tall, with the opening size at .64 ins (which equates to a 16mm thimble size). There is lettering inside "D E Long. Sterling U S pat. Dec 28 1926". Searches of US patents and Gay Ann Rogers yield nothing. The enamelling is damaged at the rim. Has anyone any ideas please? love Sue

09.01.2022 As 2019 winds down into the last two days of the year, so does Thimbleselect's Sales. Just two last days left of thimble trading and then it's time to hang up the CLOSED sign. Thank you one and all for your support in purchasing thimbles over the last 32 years. It's time for me just to dabble in my own thimble collection and keep the Learn More About...Thimbles topics going, refreshed with new knowledge and photos gleaned.... Wishing you all the best for a healthy safe 2020 love Sue www.thimbleselect.com

08.01.2022 Does anyone know anything more about this previously unrecorded Spode thimble? Is it part of a set? Who commissioned it? I'd love to hear from you if you do. love Sue www.thimbleselect.com

07.01.2022 For quite a while now I have wanted to complete the section that I began in 2002 - adding the last part of the Francesca and other character head thimbles. Today I have released the final part - that on Pewter character head thimbles. Did you know they precede the china thimbles of the early 1980s? Read more where the USA dominates this trend ... love Sue https://Thimbleselect.com/learn

07.01.2022 Like most of you during this Staying In period, I have had lots of time to devote to my beloved thimble topics. May brings a really small topic to share with you - Gerald Delaney's handpainted thimbles I was sure he's been quite a prolific thimble painter. Not so - I can only find one of his thimbles painted during his Royal Worcester period ... Do you have any of these lovely thimbles by Delaney? I'd love to hear from you. love... 06.01.2022 Since the publication of Thimbles of Australia in 1998, I have tried to follow up on Australian thimblemakers. This hasn't been difficult, as by now there is almost no-one creating thimbles in Australia. On a recent holiday in Tasmania, I was so happy to discover that as late as November Robert Herron was still producing his Tasmanian timber thimbles. It was up in Sheffield at the Blue Gum Gallery that I found some of his wooden thimbles and the owner said she had received t...he latest batch in 2018. Hooray. That makes it 38 years since Robert began turning thimbles - from the beloved Huon pine and other timbers. They have always been distinctive. I also found out that this Clarendon House handpainted thimble in my own collection is of a beautiful home near Launceston. I had often wondered where it was. So don't give up on finding Aussie thimbles - they can still be found. Love Sue

05.01.2022 I have added a new batch of items for sale. Be quick and see the NEW items. love Sue

Do you have any more to share? love Sue

04.01.2022 I have been inpired by Erin in New Zealand to create my first NZ thimble topic. Please share if you know more about these handpainted thimbles. Love Sue http://www.thimbleselect.com/#!miscellany--of-thimbles/cju3
