23.01.2022 Tummy time is so important for a childs development. I can never recommend doing tummy time enough with a child Some of the therapeutic and sensory benefits of tummy time: Promotes prone extension which is one of the two most important developmental patterns for sensory integration. Facilitates shoulder girdle strength and stability which is essential for fine motor and visual motor development. Promotes ocular motor development. ... Provides deep pressure touch to the entire surface of the body that is touching the floor/ground. Provides a small dose of joint traction to the spine with the break from gravity in upright positions. I also always recommend tummy time no matter what age the child is Tummy time is also a great position for older children and adults to use Here are some great activity suggestions for incorporating tummy time into the day for your child and for yourself! I would suggest doing this with your child, as it really encourages and promotes more participation, and as I mentioned earlier...it is great for all of our nervous systems! Play games or do puzzles Coloring, drawing, or reading a book Doing homework Allowing students in the classroom to be prone on elbows to help with attention to a lesson. Have the entire group of children do this at circle time at school! And even though I do not promote screen time...at least make the most of it and have your child watch TV or play video games prone on elbows. @mommyacademy #tummytime #crawling #developmentalmilestones
23.01.2022 Fearful and anxious behaviour is common in children especially as they come across new situations and experiences. Most children learn to cope with different fears and worries. However, some children may need some extra support if: they feel anxious more than other children of a similar age... anxiety stops them participating in activities at school or socially anxiety interferes with their ability to do things that other children their age can do their fears and worries seem out of proportion to the issues in their life. If you have any concerns about your child please contact an Occupational Therapist as they will work with you and your child to reduce your childs anxiety #anxiety #mentalhealth #kidsmentalhealth

15.01.2022 The 8 Sensory Systems All of our sensory systems work together. If one sensory system doesnt provide us with accurate information, it can impacts other sensory systems. Our sensory systems do many things for our brain and body, and when there is a miscommunication between the two, it can greatly affect a childs ability to engage and interact with others.... @roots_pedsot #sensorysystems #8senses #learnthroughplay

11.01.2022 A little trick to help kiddies who struggle with letter reversals During the years of learning to read and write, it can be common for kids to mix-up new words and letters. Young minds routinely twist a b into a d or a g or p into a qit can be a natural part of the learning process. Letter Reversals can be very common with many children until the age of 7 years. Occasional reversals past the age of 8 years can be common too.... If consistent letter reversals persists past the age of 7 years it may be a good idea to contact an Occupational Therapist It has been suggested that letter reversals are due to poor visual motor integration and poor working memory skills. #letterreversals #letterformation #writing

10.01.2022 As an OT I always preach the importance of exercise & self care I will admit, due to a busy work life and taking care off my own children I have always found it challenging to make time for my own personal self care and I really struggle with putting myself first I have recently joined up to online Pilates with the amazing @mid_ulster_pilates_physio ... I have now made a promise to myself that I am going to start prioritising my fitness and my own health for the reminder of this year So........ 06.01.2022 @anthony_wiggle doing our balancing exercises with us today Balancing The 4 essential elements of balance are ... Alignment, Strength, Attention Awareness. Alignment of the body with gravity is crucial; it makes balance physically possible. Strength gives us the power to create, hold, and adjust alignment. And attention & awareness continually monitors alignment so we know how to correct it from one moment to the next. Single leg balance is a building block for more advanced skills that your child will develop as he or she gets older. These skills include: kicking a ball, Hopping, Skipping etc. Single leg balance is also used during many functional activities: Putting on pants/shoes Stepping in/out of the bath/shower. Getting in/ out of the car. Walking up / down stairs etc. #balance #kidsfun #learnthroughplay
06.01.2022 Home made weighted lap bag! Just rice (in 2 zip lock bags) and you can slide it into whatever cover you have... a large pencil case, a puppet, a pillow case/cov...er... Use about 5-10% of your childs body weight and use for about 15 minutes at a time. This weight can help some children to gain extra proprioceptive input to their muscles and joints. It can be used during table top activities, car rides or even zoom school sessions; placing it on their lap for a calming affect. It can be used with movement (eg, lift it above your head, walk around the house, push a soft toy on top for a ride, etc), add it to a back pack... how would use this weighted bag? #proprioception #sensoryinput #childdevelopment #sensorydiet #sensorytool #sensoryprocessingdisorder #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #otathome #ot #therapy #therapyideas #therapybloggers #therapyblogger #schoolagekids #calmingactivities #yourkidsot See more
