24.01.2022 Do you know why I went with smaller class sizes and flexible seating? Having the space to cater to each individual student’s needs can be less manageable in a class size of 30. I much prefer a smaller group, not because I’m not able to manage a larger group of students but having that ability to dedicate quality time with each child is crucial. One of the things I struggled with while working in a school environment was that I always found myself questioning if I had done eno...ugh for my students? That teacher’s guilt right there - it’s real. If you’re a passionate teacher, you will always want to do more. You’ll not only enjoy the lessons that your students are completely engaged in, you’ll almost crave it. For me, those lessons were usually unplanned and spontaneous; I enjoy flexibility in the learning spaces I create. Last week, I met with my new students for their first session. After going through the sessions schedule, I would ask: how does that sound? and each one would look at me shocked that I was asking for their input. This is generally something that doesn’t happen in a class of 30. Simply by including them in their learning, I get more engagement out of them, the barrier between teacher and student is broken and their learning becomes something they welcome with open hearts.

13.01.2022 Play is the shortest route between children and their creative calling. Children learn in their own way. They can make decisions, ask questions and explore their imagination. At Learn with Miss B I start each lesson by getting to know my learner and understanding them better. I reassure them that they can make mistakes, ask questions and take their time! ... When I assess their understanding, I do it while they play and explore. I do it subtly so that they don’t feel like they’re being tested. When I hear that they can’t wait to come back, it feels my heart with so much joy. @asiya_and_maye

11.01.2022 I am constantly planning and reevaluating my sessions. Opening up my learning space gives me room for flexibility and allows me to build on my ideas. I am also constantly learning by completing online professional developments and training for my business. I know I have a responsibility to my students and families - I will always ensure to provide them with the best practice and professionalism. The one place I learn the most and am able to grow as a teacher is MY STUDENTS. ...They teach me through conversations and questions. I love a good discussion and understanding their needs. My favourite professional developments that I’ve attended would have to be THRASS, SMART spelling and my numeracy lectures at uni where I was introduced to the fabulous work of Di Siemons & George Booker! I’m always researching and building on my knowledge so if you know of any great PD’s coming up! Let me know : @asiya_and_maye

10.01.2022 Do your children know they can achieve more by making mistakes or do they get anxious about it? This might surprise some of you, but I don’t use erasers in my classroom. I think it’s important to learn from our mistakes and so I teach my students how to cross something out and move on instead of erasing it. The mistake stays there, right before the correction, to help them see the whole process visually but also to show them that they don’t need to feel ashamed of it and h...ide it. When I’m assessing a student on their understanding of something, I ask them to have a go at it and encourage them to try their best. I’ll sit back and observe and learn how they learn. This helps me understand how best to teach them and plan for their sessions, especially when they make mistakes. I remind my students that it’s okay to make them. I even try to model this myself by deliberately making mistakes in front of them (although I’ll admit, they’re not always deliberate). When they see it coming from an adult who they respect and listen to, it helps normalise it to them and shows them that it’s not something to be ashamed of. @asiya_and_maye

05.01.2022 When I designed my first learning pack, I thought about all of the things I wished I could hand to my prep parents when they felt their child needed more support. Something versatile and reusable. Not a notebook or worksheets they will eventually throw away. I thought of the quality and refused to cut corners to produce something that simply made a profit. I wanted my learning pack to take weight off of parents shoulders and have them feel confident about school readiness. I also added a detailed guide so that the activities could be meaningful and age appropriate. There is a well thought out reason behind each item that goes into my school readiness learning pack and I think it's these reasons that make the pack stand out from the rest.
