20.01.2022 These, plus a couple more will be heading up to Glen Forrest Primary School early next week (when I finish them). You know you're doing it right when the principal doesn't want to leave the class to go back to work and Aboriginal parents stay for 2 workshops then tells you how happy they are with the way you present Aboriginal culture and art workshops.
20.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what an Artist's kitchen/dining area might look like when they need space to prepare 25sq mts of wood panels for a mural and the weather is threatening rain? Hmmm, crowded This is being preped for a trip to Margaret River to be painted up and installed at the MR Leisure Centre for the Out Of School program.
20.01.2022 My classroom for today gotta love my job.
19.01.2022 A 'Little' a day keeps the blues away. This cutie is sporting a curvy Marri stick handle and a pop of teal to brighten up the day.
18.01.2022 Oooooohhhhh check out these beautiful colours. These are just some of my unique hand dyed colours you'll get to work with in my upcoming workshops.
18.01.2022 My two little mates James and Wally had a hoot today sharing their camping adventures with the kids. The kids were totally engaged while learning about Aboriginal culture. Their favourite things were the Aboriginal flag and the kangaroo skin followed by everything else. Inquisitive little minds taking it all in. They all got to create their own painted story, here are 2 of my favourites. The Artists a 4 years old and I love their stories.
17.01.2022 Here are some photos from yesterday at Kennedy Baptist College.

15.01.2022 For the past 3 days I've been doing a residency at Perth College, working with a group of Aboriginal students to create a large mural. We workshoped design and from there I pulled a design together from their drawings. We then discussed that design and made changes that the girls wanted. Colour selection was interesting and needs a bit of extra guidance. Next I guided the girls through the process of large scale drawing in chalk and finally today we put paint on the wall. They will complete the work under the guidance of school staff and I'll go back in a couple of weeks to tweek the finishes and add some finer details. The final design represents the various parts of country the girls come from.
15.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands Childrens Day. One of my greatest joys is working with Aboriginal koorlangka ( children). Especially Bibbulmun koorlangka, teaching them their culture and language. This will make them strong in their identity, connection and spirit. In 1988, the first National Aboriginal and Islander Childrens Day was established on 4 August and was set against the backdrop of protests led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their suppo...rters during the bicentennial year. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples felt a day was needed to celebrate our children, to give them confidence and make them feel special and included. The date 4 August was historically used to communally celebrate the birthdays of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken from their families at a young age, without knowing their birthday the Stolen Generations.
15.01.2022 Some of you may remember the Tree of Hope installation at Perth Library from last year in May...well it was meant to be up for 6 months, I got the call to uninstall it well over a year later and now I have about 60 metres of raffia rope to recreate. I'm thinking I need to do something really special with it.
15.01.2022 As part of their Dreaming main lesson our Class 1 had an incursion today with Lea Taylor ( Creative Culture Lea Taylor Aboriginal Weaver & Artist). Their engaged, smiling faces say it all!

14.01.2022 SOLD OUT Another fun new workshop from me to you. In this workshop Ill teach you how to make oval/long baskets just for a bit of variety. Suitable for beginners and experienced weavers.
14.01.2022 When does craft become art? I considered myself an Artist, I create work that has given people an emotional response, my work tells a story, it has place attached and as many know it is not that easy. My work and that of many other 'Artists' is often referred to as craft. It is insulting and it generally comes from people with a fine arts degree. A gallery director insulted my Art just recently by calling it craft. I was hit by the realisation that if gallery directors don't ...see my work as art then my practice is at risk of not ever being seen as art. In that moment I also realised why other gallery directors who were invited to my exhibition and did not turn up. My work has a process attached. The image below is an example of process. I had the idea, funnily, in a dream, I woke up and sketched what I dreamed and then set about creating. I had to dye my raffia, because it had to be a particular colour to match the wood that was collected from country and also the Echidna quills I has saved from an Echidna I saw run over and stopped, in the hope it was still alive. My work has story attached. Entitled 'Suspended in Time, Womens Business', tell the story of womens work, hunting small animals, preparing them for eating, it shows a womans connection to country through digging sticks in the earth, a basket made by women from fibres from country for the collection of food. Suspended in time, because these practices are alive and well. That is evident in this piece. My work is not craft. My work tells story. My work had process, my work gives emotional response. My work is Art.
14.01.2022 A new colour from the dye pot. It's not pink, it's not red, you can drink it, you can eat it in another life. What can it be?
13.01.2022 I am very passionate about what I do. Sharing Culture through Art and Yarning has been my slogan since I started my business. I go about my business not thinking about how or even if I have impacted on people. Then something like this happens...I was nominated for a Perth NAIDOC Award in the Artist category and have been notified that I am a Finalist. Loving what I do makes it easy and meeting so many amazing supporters of Aboriginal people, art and culture is a bonus that comes with the territory. I must admit that my eyes leaked a little bit when I got the phone call telling me I was a Finalist. Being nominated is winning to me.
12.01.2022 ONLY 3 PLACES LEFT There are only 4 places left for this workshop at The Goods Shed. The Saturday event is now fully booked. If you're thinking about booking I would get on to it soon or you might miss out.
12.01.2022 I love to experiment with natural fibres to recreate the ancient practices of my ancestors. Natural fibres for string making is one of my favourites to explore.
11.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what an Artists kitchen/dining area might look like when they need space to prepare 25sq mts of wood panels for a mural and the weather is threatening rain? 11.01.2022 Cultural Yarn The Echidna, not to be confused with the Porcupine, is native to Australia and New Guinea. There are only 2 species of Echidna. The Short Nose Echidna and the Long Nose Echidna. They have a pouch like a kangaroo, a beak like a bird, the have spines or quills that they can not "shoot" at predators and they lay eggs. The male Echidna has a 4 headed penis but only uses 2 when mating as the female has a 2 branched reproductive tract. The Porcupine, on the other hand has very long quills that can be shot at their predators. There are also 12 different species of Porcupine spread over a much larger territory. Porcupine is Latin for "Quill Pig". We do not have Porcupine in Australia. The Noongar word for Echidna in Nyingarn.
11.01.2022 Our commissioned Artefacts are now at their new home, The Perth Transport Authority.
11.01.2022 HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WEAVING??? LAST SEEN ON SATURDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2020. I have a video showing the bag on display at a workshop on the 12th of September. That is the last time it was included in a display. If you see it at someone's house please remind them that it is not good to take what does not belong to you and ask that it be returned. ... I request that if you have it, please take it to 'The Goods Shed' in Claremont and leave it with the staff. No questions asked.
10.01.2022 Thank you Jenn Hiller of Story_Creator #storycreatorperth for putting this together for me.
10.01.2022 I received this email today. Any other Aboriginal Artists following here should have a look. See the poster below. CALL OUT FOR ABORIGINAL ARTISTS CREATIVES. "Hi Lea,... I’m a casting producer working on an exciting brand new TV show for Channel 10, ‘Making It Australia’. We're looking for makers/crafters/artists in the Indigenous community and were hoping you could help us spread the word on your Creative Culture facebook page. We don't have much time for casting so any help or advice would be really appreciated. I've attached the flyer. Would you let me know if you could share this? Thanks so much, Alicia"
10.01.2022 Today was all about Wearable Weaving. Beads, feathers, nuts and quills were the order of the day. I didn't get many photos from this workshop because it was very hands on with a full house. Thanks to The Goods Shed for hosting me this weekend.
10.01.2022 I just have to share this beautiful creation made by the amazing Artist and creator Pene Turner Creative. I met Pene via FB and have since caught up a few times for a cuppa and a yarn. Do yourself a favour and check out Pene' work, it's truly next level awesome. She has a beautiful collection of handcrafted spoons and scoops available, check out her work.
09.01.2022 Being nominated for this years NAIDOC Awards was really special and being a Finalist was pretty darn great. I felt like a winner already. Community recognition comes each time you lot like, comment and share my posts or someone new joins my page or comes along to a workshop. Sharing culture is what the end goal always is for me. Last night I was recognised for doing what I love by my Aboriginal community, being named 'NAIDOC Perth Runner-Up Artist of The Year 2020'. Thank yo...u all for being part of the journey, a part of my personal healing and a part of building relationships between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people. 'Sharing Culture Through Art and Yarning'

08.01.2022 Thank you Fern for getting your friends together for today's weaving workshop. Everyone made a 'Little' which meant everyone got a basket completed.
08.01.2022 Old meets young, Old meets new and a scaley visitor eating strawberries. I have had a very long but very interesting day. I hung out with a lovely Elder on country. We yarned about life, she shared her stories with me while I made a 'Little' out of native plant material at a special womens site. It was worth the 5 hour round trip, to just sit and yarn and weave. I'll sleep well tonight.
08.01.2022 A new colour from the dye pot. Its not pink, its not red, you can drink it, you can eat it in another life. What can it be?
07.01.2022 Yesterday I was at Kennedy Baptist College for a workshop with the Yr 11 students from the Newman Indigenous Tour 2020. Unfortunately due to Covid they missed out in their trip but instead got to hang out with me for the day. Each student created a piece and I then put them all together to make this final work which will be hung somewhere in the school.
07.01.2022 It was so nice being back in the school environment. Thank you to Aimee at West Coast Steiner School for having me today to yarn about Aboriginal culture.
07.01.2022 I'm having a relaxed day today because the rest of my week is nuts so I made another 'Little' to add to my collection. This one was started last week at a workshop I did for Neami staff.
07.01.2022 Roses among the thorns. A little example of what you might like to have a go at making in my Wearable Weaving Workshop.
06.01.2022 A little self promotion for Wear it Blak Wednesday. Today I was at Smyl Community College Medina for a weaving workshop with the staff and students. Thanks for having me. They are a great bunch of young ladies.
06.01.2022 Some days I just want to get really dirty and today was one of those days. I took myself off to the shed in search of a bit of wood to work with. I ended up picking a lump of Jarrah and finished up with a hand carved Jarrah Bowl. My right arm is feeling it now but I'll survive.
05.01.2022 ONLY 4 PLACES LEFT Im super excited to share this workshop with you all. Tickets are now live for my Wearable Weaving Workshop at The Goods Shed. Youll make your very own woven necklace in this workshop. Sound strange? It will be a great opportunity to get super creative.

04.01.2022 SOLD OUT Great news but not for all. The morning session is now fully booked and there are only 3 places left for the afternoon session. ONLY ONE PLACE LEFT.... https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=672150&
03.01.2022 Since colonisation WA has had many different plant species introduced. Unfortunately some of those plants have become a real and serious problem to the environment. One of those plants is Watsonia. Watsonia originated in Africa and was introduced as a flowering species for the garden. Over time it has spread causing big problems in and around our waterways. There is, however a small upside to this weed....I can collect it without getting in trouble and make use of it by making string with it. The colour is beautiful when it dies off and the string is very strong.
03.01.2022 Here's a link to an Art Publication in which works by some of the Aboriginal Artist who Exhibited in Noongar Country 2020 are featured; my work is one of those featured.
03.01.2022 Thank you Bilya Koort Boodja in Northam for having me today. If you haven't been up to see this amazing place make a point of it some time. 03.01.2022 Thank you Karol from Perth College for inviting me to come along to share culture with the Art Department staff and School Heads. Awesome conversation shared about natural fibres used for weaving and string making while everyone made natural string for their own Bracelet.
02.01.2022 Yunjidt Mandji - Bulrush Rope This plant serves many purposes for Bibbulmun people. Apart from providing a valuable food source it can also be used for rope making. The green rope was made with fresh fibre which will dry over time to a soft flexible but very strong rope. The middle rope was made green and is now about 2 years old. The brown rope was made from already dried plant material which I soaked in water to stop it from breaking. It is a very course rope with little flexibility but remains strong.
02.01.2022 Some days I get so wrapped up in creating I forget about the important stuff like cooking dinner . Oh well, another 'Little' finished and we're having a late dinner Lifes little dilemmas.
02.01.2022 Ahhhhhh, another great day weaving , yarning and sharing culture. It was fully booked plus a couple of extra ladies who came for coffee but stayed for weaving and a couple of returns as well. Thanks for coming along ladies and gents.
01.01.2022 A new 'Little' Down By The Sea. The scallop shell just happened to have the same green as the basket and was a perfect fit.
01.01.2022 Dowir Kwadga-be Dowir Burder-be Always Was Always Will Be ... Nidja boodja ngang. Nidja moort ngang. This is my country. This is my family.
