24.01.2022 Today’s work - finishing to judge a short story competition for St Kilda Historical Society. The stories are related to St Kilda (set there, mention it or about it). I’m loving this so much, as I’ve lived in or near this suburb for most of my 20 years in Melbourne. What a tour de force through the Luna park, Acland street, Espy and so on... It’s especially poignant because of lockdown - I miss St Kilda!
19.01.2022 Tomorrow at 7pm (Melbourne time) I'll be speaking about one of my favorite memoirs, Autobiography of a Face written by the American poet and essayist Lucy Grealy at The Heroines Festival. Please join us if you can: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/heroinesfestival/414413#
18.01.2022 And look at this beautiful book that was left - very aptly if you look at the cover - in my garden by a postman. Loved this visceral and disturbing (in the best possible way!) novel about women and their bodies and the social structures that all too often betray them... the book will be out in February and I’ll discuss it then with its Perth-based author Josephine Taylor online via Avid Reader Bookshop
16.01.2022 Next week I'm looking forward to interviewing the co-authors Marie Younan and Jill Sanguinetti as a part of Social Inclusion Week 2020 and International Day for People With a Disability for Geelong Regional Libraries. Their book A Different Kind of Seeing is a riveting and warm true story of one woman's triumph over very tough circumstances. It also speaks in glowing terms about an organisation that means the world to me and my younger child - Vision Australia. This is a free event. 16.01.2022 I'm thrilled to participate yet again at Wollongong Writers Festival. This year I'm returning to speak about my 'old' theme - non-monogamy. I'll be a participating chair and discuss this topic as well as the joys and challenges of writing about sex and romance in general with the talented writers Paul Dalgarno and Jinghua Qian. Hope you can join us. Info is here: https://wollongongwritersfestival.com/beyond-monogamy-love-
15.01.2022 "Not for nothing do we have the Bad Sex in Fiction Award," writes the novelist Paul Dalgarno as he offers excellent tips how to AVOID being nominated for this said award - on my blog The Writing Life this month. You're welcome to read more here: http://leekofman.com.au//writing-sex-should-be-uneasy-a-g/
10.01.2022 What lays beyond monogamy? How does 'alternative love' work? And how do we write about romantic love as well as sex in general? I'll be discussing such matters with the gifted writers Paul Dalgarno and Jinghua Qian at Wollongong Writers Festival next week ONLINE. 09.01.2022 Dear writers, are you builders or renovators by inclination? If you aren't sure what I mean by this, but interested to find out - I explain these concepts, which are a part of the writing process, here in my new blog post. http://leekofman.com.au/the-writin/builders-and-renovators/
09.01.2022 This is an inspiring post - a great reminder of what a HARD work writing is, but also that the labour pays off.
05.01.2022 My biggest grievance about interviewing authors on Zoom is that I can't get them to sign my copies of their books... But otherwise loved doing this closing event for Word for Word National Non-Fiction Festival last night with 3 remarkable debut authors Quentin Sprague, Rebecca Giggs and Stephanie Honor Convery. We talked quite in depth about the process of writing nonfiction.
04.01.2022 I'm honored to be interviewing Rebecca Giggs, Stephanie Honor Convery and Quentin Sprague about their exceptional nonfiction books exploring the worlds of whales, boxing and aboriginal art at Word for Word National Non-Fiction Festival. We'll talk about the books' themes but also about the art of writing and research. Join us this Sunday? http://www.wordforwordfestival.com.au//life-changing-the-/
