23.01.2022 Looking for something simple to help you cope with stress at the moment? I’d like to present you with the 5-4-3-2-1 method of bringing yourself back to a grounded centre. 5: Find a comfortable spot and say the names of five things you can see 4: Slowly touch four things and say their name 3: Name three things you can hear... 2: Name two things you can smell, and 1: Name something you can taste. The beauty of this technique is that you can do it just about anywhere. And you can name the things out loud, or quietly to yourself in your own head if you want to stay private. I use this technique to cope with anxiety when it occasionally attacks me. Try it for yourself and see if it helps. Like most things, it gets more powerful and easier to perform the more you practice it. Let me know how you get on.

20.01.2022 Mainstream media won’t discuss men’s health week... so we will.

20.01.2022 Myth #4 of Bipolar Disorder: People with bipolar disorder cannot maintain healthy relationships I have friendships that go back to high school (I’m in my 60s). It’s just not true that relationships cannot be forged. It just takes a little extra care and effort by both parties. It needs an attitude of ‘what can I do to make your life easier today?’ But it’s also true that long-term romantic partnerships take extra work. My marriage didn’t work out. So love relationships take a...n extra level of commitment and working together to make the best of things. The challenge society faces is that bipolar is only mentioned when something goes wrong; we never hear from those who are enjoying successful marriages and partnerships, but I’m sure those marriages and relationships are out there. My husband had bipolar disorder. He was brilliant and the kindest, most unselfish man I have ever known. I was married to him for 49 happy, happy years. Sure, there were bad times because he had bipolar. But because I understood he had no choice in it, we were able to have a wonderful marriage. Glenda Austin Thompson Living with a partner with bipolar is tough, it takes an extra level of communication and understanding. My marriage has had its ups and downs, but with communication and understanding, it’s stood the test of time. Sharon Chisholm If you have a Bipolar disorder and you want to explore further what that diagnosis means to you and your loved ones, get in touch with me and let’s together uncover what being Bipolar means today. 19.01.2022 Depression robs you of the positive. It's hard to see good; instead, cynicism and gloom flood in. But there is something you can do to help counteract all this negativity: build positive brain circuitry. Building positive brain circuitry: When describing something, describe only the good parts. This helps train your brain to short-circuit the negative traits your brain has. Try noticing what was good about a recent event. As an experiment, see what happens when you tell someo...ne only the good stuff, leaving out the bad stuff. What is their reaction? How do they respond? What lessons could you learn from this? If you'd like to talk with someone about your negative brain and what you can do to counteract it, even in times of depression, then drop me a line at [email protected]. I look forward to helping you move back into positive territory.

18.01.2022 No one looks forward to losing a pet, but the death of a much-loved family member is sadly inevitable. Many Aussies grew up with pets and continue that pattern well into old age. When we are young, pets are our adventure buddies, our best friends, our confidants. That relationship doesn’t change with the years retirees look to their animal companions to provide company, amusement, joy and love. I have written a page on how to live with grief after the loss of a family pet..., and you can find it here: https://leehopkins.com.au/pet-loss-and-grief/ One tip: Be prepared for difficult days anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, all can trigger difficult thoughts and feelings. As always, if you need help, please contact me on 8120 0300, [email protected] or via Messenger on this site.

14.01.2022 Creativity in Bipolar Disorderare we all geniuses? Actually, no. Sorry to burst a bubble. It’s a good myth that Bipolar Disorder (BD) sufferers are creative types that can burn the midnight candle and produce work that changes the world. Unfortunately, too much clinical evidence exists that points out extreme mania in BD is actually counter-productive to creative output. You might be outputting lots of work, but the quality is probably less than you would accept in normal ...circumstances. I have a blog post all about Creativity and Bipolar Disorder sorting the myths from the facts. You can read it here: https://leehopkins.com.au//creativity-in-bipolar-disorder/ If you've been recently diagnosed Bipolar, and want to talk to someone about what that means for your life and your family, please get in touch. Email me at [email protected] and let's start talking.

14.01.2022 According to experts, there are four different types of depression: Endogenous depression This type of depression is genetic and neurobiological the type of depression people are ‘born to have’ Depression as a consequence of attachment problems or abuse Due to an early life loss or adversity, or failure of parents to provide a secure base and safe haven for the developing child... Situational or stress-induced depression Serious stress, often chronic, can deplete the brain of critical neurotransmitters and thus over-sensitise it to stress, the outcome of which is hard-to-shake depression Post-traumatic stress depression Depression emerging in post-childhood after accident, injury, natural disaster, medical trauma or combat-related trauma. There are things you can do to relieve the pressure of depression from these types, and I break them down in a post on my blog: https://leehopkins.com.au//the-four-types-of-depression-a/

10.01.2022 Do what you can, with what you have, when you can.

09.01.2022 My friend Sharon Chisholm wrote this for a friend back in 2017. Still beautiful.

04.01.2022 Good news for those of us with a bipolar disorder. Medical company LivaNova are pumped about their latest results for treatment-resistant bipolar disorder sufferers. They recently announced the publication of a new study that showed adding vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy to treatment-as-usual significantly improves outcomes in patients with treatment-resistant bipolar depression (TRBD)....
