21.01.2022 I'd like to provide you with some information about an evolving COVID-19 situation off the Pilbara coast. On September 16 a bulk carrier named ‘Patricia Oldend...orff’ anchored nine nautical miles off Port Hedland from Manilla - in preparation for being loaded with manganese ore. The vessel was scheduled to berth earlier this week with a crew of 20 Filipino nationals on board plus the vessel’s master. However, we were informed by the vessel that two crew members were showing flu-like symptoms, so arrangements were made to have them tested. Those tests occurred yesterday when two RFDS nurses boarded the vessel by helicopter to collect samples. The nurses wore full PPE and, along with the flight crew, took all the necessary safety precautions. This afternoon it has been confirmed that the two crew members tested positive for COVID-19. The crew members remain on board the ship in isolation and the ship is still anchored off the coast. Our teams at Health are well-drilled at responding to situations like this so an incident team has been formed. They will be sending a rapid response team of clinical and logistical staff to Port Hedland first thing in the morning. The rapid response crew will assess the situation in the morning on the best way to deal with the crew on board the vessel. This is an evolving situation and is being handled appropriately. The safety of Western Australians is always our highest priority in dealing with these cases. We will keep you up to date with further information as it comes to hand. These two cases show just how easy it is for the virus to return in our State. It is why we must remain extra vigilant and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Strong border controls and quarantine systems are so important when it comes to protecting all Western Australians.
21.01.2022 On Sunday, we announced our plan to phase out single-use plastics in WA over the coming years - including things like plastic straws, cutlery, non-recyclable co...ntainers and more. This plan will build on our decision to ban lightweight plastic bags in Western Australia two years ago. Prior to the ban, WA was using roughly 670 million bags per year, with most going to landfill and around 7 million ending up polluting our environment. It's a change that's had a big impact for our environment - and it didn't take us long to adjust our behaviours. How have you found the change? Just like we have with plastic bags, our plan is about phasing out plastics which do a huge amount of damage to our environment, and transitioning our State to use more sustainable alternatives. More information about Western Australia’s Plan for Plastics can be found at www.dwer.wa.gov.au/single-use-plastic

12.01.2022 Starting today, the historic, one-off $600 WA Household Electricity Credit is now appearing on power bills. It'll be applied to all residential accounts over th...e November-December billing cycle, and it will mean WA families have a bit of extra money available in the lead up to Christmas. My only request is this: if it means you have a bit more to spend these holidays, please support our local WA businesses. Spending local means supporting WA jobs, supporting your fellow West Aussies, and keeping WA safe and strong. All residential customers current as of 4 October qualify for the credit. If you have a Synergy or Horizon Power account, the amount will appear automatically on your next power bill. If you pay for your electricity through a different provider, you can apply to receive the credit at www.wa.gov.au/energycredit

03.01.2022 Have you seen whales or other marine fauna while out fishing? You can help provide valuable information to fisheries scientists by reporting what you see as a c...itizen scientist. By downloading the free Marine Fauna Sightings app from the App Store or Google Play, you can provide information on a range of marine fauna to help track them along the WA coastline. Gaining a better understanding of where whales are, and when, for example, means we can reduce the risk of entanglements in commercial and recreational fishing gear. It also helps inform more effective management solutions. The app was developed by our scientists in collaboration with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Users can note the species, numbers and their movements, and add photos, which is matched to location data from your phone. While individual sightings add to the data, the biggest help is to undertake a ‘survey’ either on your way out or back from a fishing trip. This allows scientists to determine where you saw marine fauna, but equally important, where animals weren’t sighted. Starting as a locally focussed collaboration, the app has since expanded its scope to include more marine animals, such as dolphins, turtles and dugongs and is now nation-wide. It also includes handy information to help identify species and learn more about them.
