25.01.2022 S T R E S S ... something we’ve all become a little too familiar with lately. Did you know that stress could be an underlying cause of symptoms such as headache, poor sleep, restlessness, fatigue, and digestive upsets? Not to mention its impact on hormones - increased or new PMS symptoms, late or missing periods, and other unexplained hormonal symptoms can be triggered by stress. ... Getting to know your own unique stress symptoms is a really helpful way to start to gain some understanding of how stress affects you, and help you to seek support when you need it. Building resilience is the BEST way to manage stress. I know for me, stress isn’t going to magically disappear - but I CAN learn to respond to it differently, and help my body to bounce back more quickly. Journaling, fresh air, walking in nature, laughing, recognising things I’m grateful for, and making time for yoga and meditating each day make a HUGE difference to how I navigate my days. I call this my ‘resilience toolkit’ - and I actually had to make a list of these tools as I am guaranteed to forget them when I need them most! What are some of the things you’ve found work for you? Take some time to build your own resilience toolkit, and if your stress and overwhelm are getting the better of you - I’m here to help. We have lots of naturopathic options to help you get through stressful times, so that you can find the space to feel better and start discovering your own toolkit. Message me if you want to chat x

22.01.2022 Doesn’t get any fresher than this... . We are lucky enough to have family who grow their own beautiful organic produce on their property. This weekend we got to collect some of this bounty for ourselves! We came home with baby carrots (pulled up by my 9yo), beetroot, chard, fennel, celery, garlic, colourful lettuces and an assortment of amazing herbs and little chillies that look like gemstones! And you know what - I found it really changed the way I planned my meals f...or this week - I felt much more inspired and motivated to create our menu for this week, and am really looking forward to cooking with this gorgeous, vibrant food. So - what can you do to re-invigorate your interest in fresh, real food? Try a new market or green grocer? Dig out an old cookbook you haven’t looked at for years? Explore a new type of cuisine? It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to cooking, especially when you have a family to feed - so this is my invitation to do something a bit different this week (even if it’s just buying a vegetable you’ve never cooked with before!) and see what happens! I’d love to hear how you go - pop a comment below to share your inspirations, they might just help someone else as well! #wellnesssimplified #eatsimple See more

21.01.2022 Good morning . For many of us, today marks a significant return to a more normal-looking life - there’s people sitting in cafes, the kids are back at school, the pubs & clubs are opening, and we’re starting to spend more time with friends and family. While this is great news for most of us, it also brings some apprehension and anxiety as we step back out into the world. You might be feeling more anxious than usual and wondering why; you might be sleeping poorly and fe...eling more tired than usual. If this is you - you’re definitely not alone! I’ve been seeing this in many of my patients recently. The good news is, there’s lots we can do to support your nervous system during the coming weeks while you adapt to yet another ‘new normal’. A personalised combination of nutrients, herbs and lifestyle advice can get you back to feeling more like yourself - message me or book online (links in profile) and I’ll work with you to help you feel better xx . #wellnesssimplified #lookafteryourself See more

19.01.2022 Feelin a little smug about this lunch I created for myself today Inspired by my current favourite dish at Shiny Brew and facilitated by the fact that my greens-resistant 9yo was at a friend’s place, here’s what’s in the bowl: organic curly kale picked up at Murwillumbah Farmers' Market - quickly sautéed with a pinch of cumin, ground coriander and turmeric, then thrown in the oven to get crunchy; zucchini (there’s no zucchini emoji ok!) - a tiny wee zuke grown by my cle...ver sister, sliced lengthways and sautéed in the pan the kale just left, along with a handful of my sister’s fresh peas; joined by some sliced halloumi (yummmm) And accompanied by 2 lovely poached happy eggs (also from my sis!) Pretty awesome huh? Now I wish I’d sprinkled it with some black sesame seeds ... oh well next time!! It was DELICIOUS. What are you creating this weekend? Kitchen or elsewhere ... inspire me! 14.01.2022 It’s been a tough year. Our already stress-filled lives have become flooded with a whole host of new things that place stress on our bodies and minds. . Now really is not the time to try to make big lifestyle changes - the best thing you can do for your health right now is to give yourself a break. . Remind yourself of the things that make you feel good, that make you feel more like yourself - write them down if it helps - and start doing them.... Read a book just for the fun of it, put on your favourite music from when you were young and impulsive and dance along, walk on the grass barefoot, go for a swim, cuddle your fur babies .. be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to recover. There’s plenty of time to build better habits once your brain feels safe. What will you do today to help bring some calm back into your life? #lookafteryourself See more

14.01.2022 Treat the person, not the disease . It’s a fundamental part of the naturopathic approach - I don’t see you as a diagnosis or a syndrome, I see you as a whole person with a unique history, unique circumstances and unique needs. . This means when we work together, you’ll get a carefully refined plan to address your very specific health needs - not just a standard protocol that I deliver to everyone.... . Personalised treatment is the key to getting the results you want - and I’d love to be the one to help! . If you’ve been feeling like your health concerns are not being treated with your uniqueness in mind, maybe it’s time for a change - message me to book a free chat and we can talk about what approach I might take if we worked together. #wellnesssimplified #personalisedhealth See more

11.01.2022 Tuesday tip... stop putting yourself last! I say this with much love, and because it’s a lesson I continue to struggle with. . eat when you’re hungry (set a reminder to eat lunch if you need to!!) drink when you’re thirsty... book a massage when your body aches get some blood tests if you don’t feel right ask for help when you need it get outside when you need to clear your head go to bed early . I have had a sore neck & shoulder for weeks now, and finally got myself a remedial massage yesterday - and wow, what do you know .. I feel so much better!! And am wondering why I didn’t do it weeks ago. Does anyone else do this? . Let me know in the comments - what have you been putting off? 07.01.2022 Shadows and light . The world feels heavy at the moment, and it’s ok if it’s making you feel a bit heavy too. Look after yourself the way you would look after a child - plenty of rest, sunshine, nourishing food, limit exposure to news & social media, and be gentle with yourself. I’m mixing up herbs today to soothe overwhelmed nervous systems for my lovely clients - to calm the mind, settle the nerves, reduce anxiety, improve resilience and promote deep restful sleep.... Let me know if you need some - call, message, or comment below and we’ll work out what you need. #lookafteryourself #wellnesssimplified See more

07.01.2022 ZINC for PMS Did you know ... a recent clinic trial showed that taking 30mg of zinc for 12 weeks SIGNIFICANTLY reduced symptoms in women diagnosed with PMS. Both physical and psychological symptoms improved - just from zinc! Such a simple nutrient but one I'm finding more and more women (and girls) are deficient in.... Zinc is critical for your hormones, but also for your hair, skin & nails, your immune function, your appetite regulation, neurotransmitter production, energy metabolism... you get the picture! The humble pumpkin seed is an excellent source of dietary zinc - as are beef, chicken, legumes, other seeds & nuts, and oysters - but it's always worth figuring out why you might be deficient as well. Making sure you address the underlying reason means you don't have to be constantly trying to top up your levels. So - add some seeds to your salads, ensure you're having a bit of red meat a couple of times a week or a good combination of legumes, nuts and seeds if you don't eat meat, and comment below if you'd like to find out more about how zinc could help your cycles, moods and energy. It's one of my favourites, as my patients will know :-) Image by Siobhan Dolezal from Pixabay

04.01.2022 So what can we do to improve our resilience? After putting together yesterday's post on stress & how it affects your body, I thought I'd link to an article I wrote about the 6-step process I use when working with stress, overwhelm, anxiety and burnout. I've developed this staged approach after working with many women suffering from various stress-related conditions, and seen it work very effectively - both for myself and my patients. If you're keen to learn more about what I ...can do to help you manage stress and improve resilience, message me and we can chat! http://leesayoung.com/top-tips-reducing-stress/
