17.01.2022 When you take care of nature, nature takes care of you For me, there’s a load of thoughts wrapped up in that sentence, as I’m sure to readers it will hold a different meaning to each. For those who know me personally, and the role I play as an unofficial carer to my 81yr old parent with many needs (who lives with me), there’s a deeper personal meaning as to why I’m in the garden ... But in general, while I let my mind rest and rejuvenate after a rather stressful week of balancing work & life, including a cancelled Adelaide flight, it wandered onto this topic of nature/nurture and how in some ways it’s very much a metaphor of our business and friendship networks. WARNING: RANT ALERT AHEAD. Life throws us rubbish everyday - in loads of different ways - it’s how you decide to deal with it that builds our resilience to succeed and stay focused on the end game. Nature will look after you if you nurture it. And your network will look after you, if you nurture it too. No one saw covid coming and the ones that have nurtured relationships are the ones who are working through it well. For some reading this, it’s probably a hard ‘denial pill’ to swallow, for others it’s a ‘well duh’ moment. But for those who read this & went ‘aha’ Write a list of: who’s referred you a client, called for advice or even bought you coffee. Ask them to leave a Facebook or Google review, or a LinkedIn recommendation of that experience. That action to support you & your business COSTS NOTHING but time (which you gave them already), and opens a channel for natural referrals to occur. If they do it - they ARE your network to nurture and ask ‘how can I help you?’ If they don’t, and no reason why (they maybe needing garden time from an 81yr old cantankerous parent) then sadly they never were, and for you, it’s time to let go. Don’t spend energy with a tribe that doesn’t value you, give it to a tribe that does. This advice comes from 10yrs of experience co-running Buzz Web Media. The clients deeming the best results right now from our management of social, web, email or ad services, are those who already have a trusted connection with their audiences. They’re not getting work from LinkedIn ‘like exchanges’ or ‘follow for follows’, they’re seeing genuine converting work coming from who knows what they do well.
