10.01.2022 Fixed or Variable, that is the question... So how do you choose? Well, fundamentally, it comes down to what works best for you and how you like to bank and plan your finances. Typically speaking you go with a fixed rate if you want the certainty of knowing exactly what your repayments will be the interest rate and repayments stay the same for the fixed term. You can fix for 1-7. The downside of fixed is that if interest rates drop across the industry yours will stay ...the same until the end of the period (on the flip side, interest rates could go up and you’ll be laughing). If you want to exit the fixed rate before the end of the term there are break costs. Variable rates fluctuate with what is going on in the economy -with the Reserve Bank of Australia "cash-rate". The advantage though is that you can make additional repayments so you can pay the loan off sooner. In most cases, there is no penalty for paying your loan off sooner. Some banks are breaking the mould with the features of their fixed and variable rates.
