25.01.2022 In the lead up to Anzac Day we pay homage to Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an unaccredited Aussie nurse who completed 16 round trips during WWI on dark ships (trans...port that ran without lights between Australia and England). Sister Kenny’s unconventional methods in caring for soldiers infected with polio exercising the affected muscles rather than immobilising them, later became the foundation for physiotherapy. 23.01.2022 In Turkey the name "ANZAC Cove" was officially recognised by the Turkish government on Anzac Day in 1985. In 1934, Kemal Atatürk delivered the following words t...o the first Australians, New Zealanders and British to visit the Gallipoli battlefields. This was later inscribed on a monolith at Ari Burnu Cemetery (ANZAC Beach) which was unveiled in 1985. The words also appear on the Kemal Atatürk Memorial, Canberra, and the Atatürk Memorial in Wellington. Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives. You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side Here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, Who sent their sons from far away countries Wipe away your tears, Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace After having lost their lives on this land they have Become our sons as well Wikipedia & AWM.

22.01.2022 On this International Women’s Day, The RAAFA SA Division acknowledges all the women who have served and continue to serve the RAAF and the RAAFA. In particular..., we recognise on this special day one of the lesser known but most influential figures of the RAAF in World War 2 who set the standard for women in the RAAF. Clare Stevenson was educated in Melbourne and completed a Diploma of Education at University. She worked with the YWCA and then Berlei in research and training. In 1940, she was identified by AVM Wrigley (air member for personnel) and Sir John McEwen (Minister for Air) to be the inaugural Director of the WAAAF based on her management skills, academic record and knowledge of women’s organisations. Initially, declining the position, she reluctantly accepted and was appointed as the first Director of the WAAAF in June 1941 with the rank of Squadron Officer. Her role required her to manage and expand the WAAF which comprised fewer than 200 women when she was appointed, by the end of 1941 it comprised 1000 personnel. By late 1944, it comprised 18,000 members making up more than 30% of RAAF ground staff. Stevenson was instrumental in addressing many systemic issues such as pay, uniforms, housing and training for the WAAAF members. Retiring as a Group Officer in 1946 for health reasons, her adept management and leadership was key to the WAAAF becoming the largest of the uniformed women’s services leading historian Al Stephens to refer to her as the most significant woman in the history of the Air Force. Postwar, Stevenson worked for the wellbeing of veterans and civilians and was awarded an MBE in 1960 and an AM in 1988. She passed away in 1988. It was early pioneers like Stevenson who set the standard for female employment in the RAAF where today women can be employed in all roles in all ranks at equal pay and are now leaders of the RAAF. The Warrant Officer of the Air Force today is WOFF Fiona Grasby OAM, one of the many RAAF leaders carrying on the legacy of Clare Stevenson. From a RAAFA / AFA perspective, we are fortunate to have WOFF Grasby as the Air Force’s representative on the Air Force Associations Joint Board Steering Group which is charged with identifying how the Association can transform for the future. 22.01.2022 This evening we commemorate the service and sacrifice of 4718946 Signaller Dennis Eric Abraham, 104th Signal Squadron, of Semaphore, SA, who was killed in actio...n in South Vietnam on this day in 1968, aged 22. His sacrifice is commemorated at Derrick Gardens within the Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide. Dennis was an electrical fitter, and was called up for national service in April 1967. He was serving with the 104th Signals Squadron in South Vietnam when the US helicopter he was travelling in was shot down in Long Khanh Province, killing him. The 104th Signal Squadron was raised for service in South Vietnam at Wacol, Brisbane, Queensland in November 1965. It replaced the 103rd Signals Squadron in South Vietnam in April 1967 and only returned to Australia after the Australian Task Force involvement ceased in November 1971. It has the distinction of being the longest serving active service tactical signals unit in the Australian Army - both past and present. Over 800 soldiers served in the unit during over five years service in South Vietnam. Three members died on active service in South Vietnam. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. Lest we forget. 22.01.2022 On this day... in 1917, Lieutenant Charles Pope VC was killed in action during the Battle of Lagnicourt. Pope was born in London, and moved to Canada then Austr...alia, where he settled in Perth with his family. He enlisted in August 1915, was commissioned as a second lieutenant, and joined the 11th Battalion on the Western Front in December 1916. He was promoted to lieutenant shortly after joining the unit. On 15 April, the 11th Battalion was holding a line more than three kilometres long near Louverval when a large German force attacked the battalion's positions. Pope was in command of an advanced post that was quickly surrounded by the Germans. When they ran out of ammunition, Pope led them in a bayonet charge during which Pope and most of his men were killed. Later, members of the battalion found his body, and those of his men, in close proximity to eighty dead Germans. Pope was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Thanks to the bravery of Pope and his men, and many other members of the battalion in forward posts, the German attack was stopped. The 11th Battalion suffered 245 casualties in the battle, of whom 180 were listed as missing. Lest we forget. 19.01.2022 Sadly Largs Bay RSL had two middle aged women steal some 20 plants including an established olive tree from our memorial garden. This is no where near acceptable behaviour in any world. This garden has been made possible by the kindness and dedication of local Veterans their families, members of the local community, DVA, PAEC, Veterans SA, Bunnings Warehouse and the Drummond Family. Not only do despicable acts like this make a mockery of the freedoms that our descendants pa...st and present fought for, it also means that every plant we have to replace is money (that we DO NOT have) that will not be spent on the welfare of our Veterans and their families, our members and th wider community of the Lefevre Peninsula. We would ask PLEASE if anyone of our neighbours and friends who love this garden and what we are doing for the community, see any suspicious behaviour report it immediately to the police. On a side note you have been filmed on CCTV surveillance footage and are fully identifiable.

16.01.2022 Here is a post to let you all know what we have proudly achieved in the welfare space over the past several weeks. We have two very important programs up and running. The first an initiative of the Largs Bay RSL and the Lefevre Peninsula Veterans Centre called Victuals for Veterans. We have been providing one free home style meal per week to our older veterans and widows. The meals are planned cooked and delivered entirely by volunteers, they are a huge success and will b...e continued until at least Christmas. This weeks choice was Lambs Fry and Bacon or Spaghetti and Meatballs. Three of the members we deliver these meals to are WW2 Veterans, so we dressed up in our finery and also presented them with their 75th anniversary certificates and medallions. We would like to say Thank You for your Service. Gwen Poole, Keith Staple, and Colin Coates. The second is a pilot program which is a collaboration between Largs Bay RSL, Lefevre Peninsula Veterans Centre, the Catalyst Foundation and DVA, called Vets on the Net. This program will run over several weeks and is designed to teach our digitally challenged Veterans and Members how to operate a computer or smart device and to navigate the digital world. A small group of participants turn up to the Largs Bay RSL one day per week and are given exclusive, one on one training, by Jacquelene and the staff of the Catalyst Foundation. We are kicking some goals in the Welfare Space out here on the Peninsula. The following photos are some taken of our recent activities. Meals being enjoyed by our Veterans 75th anniversary certificates and meals being delivered Vets on the Net underway

12.01.2022 Today we remember Captain George Hubert Wilkins, a photographer and explorer who is the only Australian official photographer from any war to receive a combat m...edal. George Wilkins was born on 31 October 1888 at Mount Bryan East in South Australia. He studied electrical engineering at the South Australian School of Mines, mechanical engineering at the University of Adelaide and music at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium. At the same time he developed a keen interest in photography and cinematography. In 1908 he moved to England to work for the Gaumont Film Company as a ‘cinematographic cameraman’. Soon afterwards he began work as a reporter for the London Daily Chronicle, travelling to report on events overseas. He learned to fly and take aerial photographs and, in 1912, he left England to report on the Balkan War, becoming the first person to take motion pictures in the front line of a war zone. In July 1917 he was appointed as an official photographer with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and reached the Western Front in time to photograph the Australians during the Passchendaele campaign. By mid-1918, now a captain, he was given command of No. 3 (Photographic) Sub-Section of the Australian War Records unit. More adventurer than photographer, Wilkins was sometimes a participant in, as well as an observer of, war. In June 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross for helping wounded under fire and #onthisday in September, earned a bar to the award for leading a group of inexperienced American soldiers through a dangerous action. 10.01.2022 Today is International Women’s Day. To mark this occasion we are sharing incredible stories of amazing women. Dame Maud McCarthy was one of the most highly dec...orated women’s leaders of the First World War. The Matron-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1919, McCarthy sailed on the first troop ship to leave England. She arrived in France on 12 August 1914 and proved to be not only an inspiring and indefatigable leader, but also an undaunted and highly-skilled administrator. She remained in charge for the entire war and became known as the nurses’ general. What many do not know is that McCarthy was Australian. She was an outstanding woman of her time, her great-niece Kate Sevier said. She took on enormous challenges under difficult conditions, and was an outstanding leader, a great role model and a pioneer in the field of nursing and military leadership. 08.01.2022 This Anzac Day will be different for all of us. To commemorate this Anzac Day, we ask you to share your images, or the images of a loved one, with us, showing Army's mateship and comradery. These stories will be compiled to form part of our Anzac Day video this year. If you'd like to be involved, please send your image, along with a story up to 50 words and the members rank, name and year of photo via email: [email protected]. 06.01.2022 Update on Adelaide Anzac Day Dawn Service: G'day all, I wanted to give you an update on current plans for the Adelaide Dawn Service. At this stage, due to the c...oronavirus outbreak, it will be going ahead with invited guests only. These guests will be those on the state order of precedence plus one representative from each ex-service organisation and kindred organisation. The invitations will be sent in the next week or so. By reducing the numbers in this way, if the threshold for mass gatherings is further reduced, we may still be able to go ahead. Unfortunately, the general public cannot attend, and the area surrounding the National War Memorial will be cordoned off. This means that the police will be present to move on members of the general public who try to attend. Please do not attempt to attend the Adelaide Dawn Service unless you have been personally invited. This is very important from a public health perspective. We are still in negotiations with the ABC regarding live radio broadcast on ABC891 and TV broadcast, and I will advise as soon as decisions are made. We have stressed to the ABC how important the broadcasts will be to those who are self-isolating. As you may be aware, many suburban and regional Dawn Services either have been or will be cancelled, because they will likely exceed the 500-person threshold. Please contact your local RSL sub-branch to find out what is happening. We have received a number of suggestions about ways in which we can all commemorate on the day without gathering in large numbers, and will share them with you over the next few weeks. I would like to stress that this is the plan right now, but the situation may well change in the next month if greater restrictions are imposed. Regards, Ian Smith Chair Anzac Day Committee
