11.01.2022 *** Health Assessment changes to migration health policy from 1 July 2019 **** 2 major changes - good news 1. The 'significant cost threshold' has been increased by 22.5 % from $40,000 to $49,000. 2. The time frame over which costs can be assessed has been changed.... Applicants for a permanent visa with a long term health condition or permanent disability will no longer be assessed for lifetime costs. Rather, the maximum period for assessment is now ten years. This will have a huge impact on visa applicants with a permanent disability. Applicants with less costly health conditions such as Hepatitis B may now also find their costs, assessed over the maximum ten-year period, are very close to the threshold of $49,000.

05.01.2022 Joint media release: More workers to support Australian farmers 5 January 2021 Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, the Hon. David Littleproud MP Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. Alex Hawke MP... The Morrison Government is providing more flexibility to encourage temporary visa holders to support Australian farmers struggling to find workers during COVID-19. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said the changes mean student visa holders will be permitted to work more than the usual 40 hours per fortnight limit during semesters if they are working in the agriculture sector. This builds on changes earlier this year for international students working in the health and aged care sector, and demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting Australian farmers and visa holders wishing to take on more work while they live and study here, Mr Littleproud said. Many regions are expecting bumper crops this year, but with COVID-19 travel restrictions international movement, there still aren’t enough workers available. This complements a range of other workforce measures we are delivering to support farmers this harvest season, Minister Littleproud said. Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs Alex Hawke said the changes would not just give temporary visa holders the ability to earn more income, they would also help farmers this harvest season and avoid food going to waste. Australians will always get priority for jobs under this Government, but we’re listening to farmers who have been clear that they need many more workers, and they need them now, Minister Hawke said. These temporary visa holders are already in Australia, many do not want to or cannot go home and they will be greatly valued in the agriculture sector. It will also be easier for temporary visa holders to access the COVID-19 Pandemic Event visa, if they choose to work in the agriculture sector, Minister Hawke said. They can now apply for the COVID-19 visa up to 90 days before their existing visa runs out and they do not need to demonstrate their attempts to depart Australia. More than 5,600 COVID-19 Pandemic event visas have already been granted to support the agriculture sector since they were made available in April 2020. Harvest Trail Services, administered by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment, will assist temporary visa holders to find harvest work, while continuing its focus on linking Australian jobseekers with jobs in regional horticulture areas. More information on the COVID-19 Pandemic Event visa is available at the Department of Home Affairs website. Anyone looking for agriculture work should visit Harvest Trail https://minister.awe.gov.au//more-workers-to-support-aus-f
04.01.2022 Parent visa applicants to remain onshore during COVID-19 The Morrison Government continues to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on visa holders and is actively reviewing the settings for various visas in response to the challenges posed by COVID-19 on an ongoing basis. In November the Government announced visa changes to support applicants in five Family visa subclasses impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions.... Today Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Alex Hawke MP, said the Government intends to make changes to allow further temporary concessions for Parent visa applicants. The Government is pursuing changes to allow certain Parent visa applicants who have applied for their visa outside Australia to be granted that visa while in Australia during the COVID-19 period, Minister Hawke said. This temporary concession would apply to Parent visa subclasses and will allow eligible applicants who are in Australia and unable to travel offshore due to COVID-19 impacts to be granted that visa, Minister Hawke said. The changes would apply to: Parent (subclass 103) visa Contributory Parent (subclass 173) visa Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa. The current processing arrangements and timeframes for Parent visa applications will not be impacted. These changes are to take effect in the first quarter of 2021. Those unable to depart should refer to the Department of Home Affairs’ website for information about options for remaining lawfully in Australia. Information about the measures the Government has taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic is regularly updated and available on the Department’s website at https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/.
